Senator and Filmmaker Take On Fox News
MONTPELIER, Vt. Condemning the Fox News Channel as a warmonger that’s agitating for a U.S. attack on Iran, documentary filmmaker Robert Greenwald and independent U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders announced an “online viral video campaign” Wednesday calling on television news organizations “not to follow Fox down the road to war again.”
Greenwald, the director behind “Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism” and “Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price,” has compiled a new three-minute video that mashes clips from Fox’s coverage of the 2003 invasion of Iraq and its aftermath with recent coverage of possible U.S. military action against Iran.
The video and an accompanying “open letter” to ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC and CNN-viewable at http://www.FoxAttacks.com-urge news organizations to ask tough questions about administration policy on Iran and say citizens should pressure them to do so.
Three telephone messages to Fox in New York seeking comment were not returned Wednesday.
One media observer said the video lacked balance and journalistic credibility.
“They are accusing others of doing what they have done, which is to stitch together multiple snippets of video and very short sound bites to make an ideological argument,” said Bob Steele, the Nelson Poynter Scholar for Journalism Values at the Poynter Institute school for journalists in St. Petersburg, Fla.
“Take this as one small piece of a 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle in the larger scheme of things,” he said.
The video has clips of U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, Fox host Bill O’Reilly and others warning of the potential for a U.S. war against Iran, spliced together with graphics that say “Sound Familiar?” and “Other networks followed Fox’s lead on Iraq.”
In one clip, CNN correspondent Christiane Amanpour says during an interview that CNN was intimidated by the administration “and its foot soldiers at Fox News.”
“We felt it important right now to raise awareness and ask the media to please ask the hard questions, before it’s too late,” said Greenwald. “We’ve focused on TV because they are the ones who have the greatest, quickest input. But over time, we will be asking and expanding this to all media.
In a conference call announcing the campaign, Greenwald and Sanders, I-Vt., said they don’t have answers about what to do about Iran, but said they fear the White House will make a unilateral decision to attack.
“We have got to put pressure on the mass media not to play the same craven role they played in Iraq, when they effectually collapsed and became a megaphone for Bush’s policies,” Sanders said. “What Robert is saying here is that the leader of that effort is Fox News, which in many ways is simply a propaganda machine for the Republican Party and the Bush administration.”

Local anti-war effort hurt by Saab’s absence
How outrageous was Rosa Parks to upset the settled norm of seating arrangements in a public vehicle? Imagine how uncomfortable the other bus passengers must have felt. What was she thinking to raise such a fuss?
If one can single out a similar outrageous voice in CityLife (now an echo) among all voices that condemned the United States’ immoral and predatory act against the Iraqi people, it was Saab Lofton’s consistent and persistent condemnations that resonated loudest.
As recently as the March 17 issue of CityLife, Saab reminded the Las Vegas community of the need to “hit the streets,” to promote a peace movement opposing the United States illegal use of military force in Iraq. Unfortunately, it was also the last such promotion from CityLife. Hopefully this trend will not last. However, there’s no question but that the local antiwar movement took a big hit when Saab left CityLife.
So here’s a shout-out to Saab Lofton. He kept the Las Vegas community well-informed. He railed about the perversity of the United States military-industrial complex. He didn’t conform with any prearranged seating assignments and said some outrageous things that hurt some people’s feelings. He did a real Rosa Parks on us — and we’re so grateful for that.
This letter of support for Saab Lofton was endorsed by PEACE NOW, a growing antiwar group in Las Vegas.

Mr. Steele’s statement about lack of balance comes from the “he-said/he-said” approach to “balance” which pervades the media. Put on a conservative Republican and a conservative Democrat and you supposedly have balance. I always thought journalism was about digging up the truth and exposing the real facts, not the lazy approach of finding two opposing versions or opinions and presenting them without context or comment.

Group to Urge War Support

WASHINGTON, Aug. 21 — A new group of prominent conservatives plans to begin a multimillion-dollar advertising campaign Wednesday to urge members of Congress who may be wavering in their support for the war in Iraq not to “cut and run.”
The group, Freedom’s Watch, is rolling out television, radio and Internet advertisements in more than 20 states and 60 Congressional districts.
Ari Fleischer, President Bush’s former press secretary and a spokesman for the group, said it would initially spend $15 million on the effort, which will also encourage voters to put pressure on their representatives for continued support of the war.
Mr. Fleischer declined to say in an interview Tuesday which members of Congress were on its list, but he indicated that it would include some Republicans as well as Democrats.
Mr. Fleischer said the central message of Freedom’s Watch is that “the war in Iraq can be won and Congress must not surrender.”
The advertisements feature Iraq war veterans and parents of veterans who lost family members in the war urging lawmakers who have supported the war not to switch their vote.
What would happen if Fox News dropped it’s slogan “Fair And Balance”? And why did they need such a slogan in the ffirst place?

While other REAL news networks are sniffing out REAL news stories, FOX fills in the gaps between their PRO-War/Anti-Immigration rants with kitty litter like… gushing over web philanthropists who raise money so that strippers can get boob jobs. Maybe you think that’s a noble cause. But I think it’s hypocritical for a self-righteous bunch who decries the “progressive secularization” of our “Judeo Christian Values” to routinely parade skimpily clad models and centerfolds across the TV screen and call it news.
I’m waiting for the Evangelical audience to notice how the hem lines get shorter and the neck lines get lower in an attempt to distract people from discovering what has recently occurred to me… that Fox News is NOT a champion of all-things-conservative and would be better at covering red carpet events than red-hot political issues. Maybe Ryan Secrest could get a news program on Fox. Or RuPaul.
While looking through the seemingly endless list of Fox advertisers, to reassure myself I’m not actually buying from them and to ensure I don’t buy from any I’ve missed ( it’s a nigh-impossible task), I noticed that it doubles as an A-Z index of oil/energy/military/pharma corporations.

I finally got around to reading your book, Battle Neverending, and I have to say that I was quite impressed. Not impressed in the sense that I didn’t expect it to be good, but rather in the sense that it exceeded my already high expectations. I found the writing style to be witty and intelligent but at the same time fluid and very easy to read. Once I started, I couldn’t put it down. I think your style of radical science fiction is highly relevant and an interesting and effective way to disseminate revolutionary ideas … Of the different segments, I would have to say the last one, Battle Neverending is my favorite. I think Tomorrowman is a great superhero. It’s too bad he doesn’t really exist, the Left could certainly use him … The real shame then, is that more people don’t know about him. I also read your proposal for the North Star television series. I have to say, although I don’t watch TV, I would probably watch that … **** told me about the stalker situation and I’d like to express my sympathy. It’s too bad that twisted motherfuckers like that find the need to take out their personal frustration on others. When I had been running III Publishing, a small press, for a few years a remarkable manuscript was sent to me. It was titled A.D. and was submitted by Saab Lofton. The writing was strong, the plot was interesting, and conceptually it was brilliant. I was struggling to sell my titles at the time, this was when Barnes & Noble and Borders were wiping out many of the independent bookstores that sold my books, but I took a chance on A.D.
I had 2000 copies printed. A.D. sold remarkably well, quickly becoming my 2nd best-selling title. It sold about 1000 copies the first year and in the next few years all the copies were sold. There was continuing demand for the book, but around then my distributor went bankrupt and I decided to stop publishing. A.D. should have been reprinted. More than that, it should have been picked up by a larger publisher with stronger sales channels.
A.D. was Saab Lofton’s first novel. I read the manuscript of his second novel, and it too should have been published by a major publisher. Saab Lofton’s voice deserves to be heard. What he says may not please everyone, but that is always the case with great writers.

I’ve looked into the books listed in the bibliography… The first was published by a small defunct anarchist publisher which describes itself as publishing “pamphlets”, sold out and was not reprinted. The second was described by Pop Occulture Magazine as “obviously a low-budget and quite-possibly home-printed affair”. There is no evidence that either of these books received a credible review, much less meet WP:BOOK. Journalists are a dime-a-dozen and not automatically notable, and these books don’t appear to establish notability either.

The anonymous stalker who posted that fake Wikipedia page falsely depicting me as a statirical/stereotypical gay prostitute (unless you “think” all blacks look alike, that’s clearly not me in that photo) is so obsessed with me he has been using the names of my fictional characters as pseudonyms.
It is ironic, however, that the stalker would use Silverbullet in this particular case, because Silverbullet is the world’s first black lesbian superheroine and is an indicator of how I stand in solidarity with the gay/lesbian/transgender community …
