Rove's Science of Dirty Tricks
Karl Rove's resignation as deputy White House chief of staff cements the political future of the waning Bush administration. George W. will have little to do except wield his veto pen; he doesn't need the steadying hand of Rove for that, or his strategic insight. As Rove joins the ranks of discredited politicians who resign "in order to spend more time with family," a retrospective of his dirty tricks might be in order. Much is attributed to Rove, dubbed "Bush's Brain" by Texas journalists Wayne Slater and James Moore-yet very little sticks to the man. Bearing in mind that we presume innocence until guilt is proved, read on:
- In 1970, College Republican Rove stole letterhead from the Illinois Democratic campaign of Alan Dixon and used it to invite hundreds of people to Dixon's headquarters opening, promising "free beer, free food, girls and a good time for nothing," disrupting the event.
- In 1973, Rove ran for chair of the College Republicans. He challenged the front-runner's delegates, throwing the national convention into disarray, after which both he and his opponent, Robert Edgeworth, claimed victory. The dispute was resolved when Rove was selected through the direct order of the chairman of the Republican National Committee, who at the time was none other than George H.W. Bush.
- In 1986, while working for Texas Republican gubernatorial hopeful William Clements, Rove claimed that Rove's personal office had been bugged, most likely by the campaign of incumbent Democratic Gov. Mark White. Nothing was proved, but the negative press, weeks before the election, helped Rove's man win a narrow victory. FBI agent Greg Rampton removed the bug, disrupting any attempt to properly investigate who planted it.
- When Rove was an adviser for George W. Bush's 1994 race for governor of Texas against Democratic incumbent Ann Richards, a persistent whisper campaign in conservative East Texas wrongly suggested that Richards was a lesbian. According to Texas journalist Lou Dubose: "No one ever traced the character assassination to Rove. Yet no one doubts that Rove was behind it. It's a process on which he holds a patent. Identify your opponent's strength, and attack it so relentlessly that it becomes a liability. Richards was admired because she promised and delivered a 'government that looked more like the people of the state.' That included the appointment of blacks, Hispanics and gays and lesbians. Rove made that asset a liability."
- After John McCain thumped George W. Bush in the 2000 New Hampshire primary, with 48 percent of the vote to Bush's 30 percent, a massive smear campaign was launched in South Carolina, a key battleground. TV attack ads from third groups and anonymous fliers circulated, variously suggesting that McCain's experience as a prisoner of war in Vietnam had left him mentally scarred with an uncontrollable temper, that his wife, Cindy, abused drugs, and that he had an African-American "love child." In fact, the McCains adopted their daughter Bridget from a Bangladesh orphanage run by Mother Teresa.
- According to the investigation of special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, Rove played a central role in the outing of undercover CIA operative Valerie Plame to columnist Robert Novak and former Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper, in retaliation for the accusation by her husband, Joe Wilson, that the Bush administration falsely claimed Saddam Hussein had sought uranium in Niger.
- Rove has ignored subpoenas to testify before Congress about the Justice Department scandal stemming from the firing of nine U.S. attorneys. He skipped a hearing on improper use of Republican National Committee e-mail accounts by White House staffers that allowed them to skirt the Presidential Records Act. Rove claims he enjoys executive privilege, which travels with him as he leaves the White House.
These are but some of the dirty tricks attributed to Karl Rove. We are to believe that Rove, born Christmas Day, 1950, is retiring to write books. Former Texas Agriculture Commissioner and populist firebrand Jim Hightower describes Rove's departure as "a rat jumping off a sinking ship." But arch-Rove watcher Wayne Slater of The Dallas Morning News knows better. He notes that Rove and his wife have built a house in the Florida Panhandle-the "Republican Riviera"-and that former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush will be 59 in 2012, a ripe age for a run for the White House. Regardless, the art and science of the political dirty tricks, learned by Rove in the Nixon years and perfected by him in the George W. Bush White House, will be with us for years to come.

Show AllFrom Leon Panetta to Karl Rove as Chief of Staff. Does that say it all? I long for the good old days.
It's naieve to think they just won't be on the phone and net with Rove behind the scenes. He doesn't need the official position. This Cluster is Rove's legacy too so he'll still be active putting lipstick on the pig
Rove is an almost classic sociopath, developmentally incapable of guilt or remorse. Destroying a career or life means as little to him as stepping on an ant, less. This is a psychological condition little recognized by the general public but quite real and prevalent -- the absence of the capability for guilt, which takes a while for a normal person to imagine. Sociopaths are often extremely successful, since conscience is frequently a hindrance to advancement.
I once viewed a documentary on Rove, and one interviewee said "Some day it will catch up to him, either in lost sleep or something else..." My answer: No, it won't. Rove will end his days, not clueless because that's not the word, rather detached from the harm he's caused.
The final story for sociopaths is the wreckage strewn and then a forgotten history; nobody really wants to remember them. They are ultimately failures, and so objects of pity.
Karl Rove looked better at what he did than he really was. A compliant and actively supportive mainstream media allowed even his most scurrilous slurs and unsubstantiated comments to be spread far and wide. This gave even a mediocre attempt of his, an expanded venue that it didn't deserve. The talk radio amoralists would run with his every insult of the dems as if it was gospel which made rove look the media genius.
We were constantly told by the media that Rove had a machievellian skill in using these 'dumbing down' negative talking point phrases. Evidently rove wrote his own press. The mainstream media which has always been bush's real base was ever happy to spew out each of rove's new insults to our traditions, our sense of fair play and even our democracy, to see if one of them could be made to stick.
Without this mainstream media support, rove couldn't have been anywhere near as important as he was. Even a gossipy back biter can ruin someone's reputation by lies. That he succeeded at it didn't make him a genius...rove's amoral cynicism is hardly genius... but to a vacuous, dumbing down, venal 'paris hilton/american idol media'...I guess he provided something that looked like it to them. Besides real genius doesn't sell advertising...dirt does.
All that is left now people...is for american psyches to 'take a shower' and wash away the greasy unclean feeling and slime that is rove's legacy.
Karl Rove is gay.
Hmmm, what part of the panhandle is turd blossom moving to? Maybe he'll be my neighbor, wouldn't that be a dream come true? I can understand why he would move here, this is a hotbed of willful ignorance unlike any I've ever seen in my 40 years on the planet. Half of this town still thinks Saddam was responsible for 9/11 and Bush is a GREAT President. Actually, it's probably closer to 75 percent, now that I think about. I always wondered when I lived up north all these years why people would call Southerners stupid, then I moved here and didn't need to ask the question...There's a reason Florida schools finish consistantly last in EVERYTHING, the people here are inbred and naturally stupid from birth...
Karl Rove is the student, who became the master of his mentor, Lee Atwater. Atwater was the "dirty trickster" political strategist for George W. Bush's dad George H. W. Bush (and previously for Ronald Regan) famous for the Willie Horton adds in Bush 1's campaign against Michael Dukakis. In his day, Lee Atwater carried the reputation of the evil political operative Rove does today. It's well reported that Dumbya Bush followed Atwater around like an annoying little brother during his dad's campaigns. Atwater said of himself, "While I didn't invent negative politics, I am one of its most ardent practitioners." However, after being diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor in 1990, Harvey LeRoy Atwater, found religion and sought forgiveness apologizing to his former foes and lamented the "tumor of the soul" that afflicted America. And maybe, by extension, himself1. Karl Rove has already "found" religion and manipulated it for political gain. I doubt that we will ever see the deathbed remorse for his past deeds, the heartfelt apologies, and the admonitions not to follow in his footsteps–not like Lee Atwater put into words just before his untimely death–in the person of Karl Rove. No, I doubt Karl Rove has at least that much humanity in him.
His use of homophobia as a campaign strategy shows his true colors as a criminal hatemonger.
Immigrants are the new gays this season.
The very first item on Amy's list is bad enough that you don't even need to see the rest to know where it's going. Many of those invited for the "free beer" are said to have been homeless guys. Rove called it a "youthful prank." Does a youth of college age have even a minimal conscience? Not in Rove's case, it seems.
I won't believe that he's really gone until this administration denies it.
AAhhhhhhh!! If Rove and his fascist cohorts try and put another Bush in the White House....... I'm getting the fuck out of this country.
Rove was the 1% guy. When the election was close, he could find ways to shave a few points and win for his candidate. That might include hand picking absentee ballots, or making sure lots of Democrats were illegally removed from the voter roles. Whatever it took, Karl could mobilize the faithful and make it happen.
So you are a scientist now Rove my son---You used to be a genius---how nice for you. I would love to exchange witty pleasantries with you but I have an urgent message for you from the people of the United States of America: eat shit and die
If Rudy becomes president, I'll eat my hat. Not even republicans could be that stupid.
"If Rudy becomes president, I'll eat my hat. Not even republicans could be that stupid."
They stole two elections for the most vicious vacuous sociopath in the nation's history -- not stupid enough to do the same for our American Scarpia?
"This ugly and dirty fellow is not going to vanish. He is just going behind the scenes to prepare Giulani's take over in 2008 at any costs, election cancellation included"
We'll be safe when he winds up like Mussolini's mistress, hanging next to his master.
Have people heard the narrative about the author of the Bush tell all book? Hatfield was the guy's name.
This, to me was by far the most important Rove dirty trick, because of the clear parallel to the Dan Rather incident during the 2004 campaign.
The word "science" is wholly inappropriate - it doesn't take anyone much above the level of a moron to lie, cheat and steal. And KR was so bad at it that, as Ms. Goodman shows, everyone knew - AND DID NOTHING. That, my friends, is the core of the problem, and it's pervasive. Think Hassert and friends covering up Foley's underage page fetish for 10 years, as just one of many, many instances. It's like, "Sure, we know he's a bank robber, but (insert twisted rationalization here.)
No, someone who had scumbag tactics down to a science would have left no fingerprints. KR got away with it because he was allowed to, not because he was proficient.
Amy Goodman is the most important journalist in the United States. Her tireless work to build an honest news program that reaches millions of people, that is based on straight reporting of actual news, and faith in common people, should win her the Nobel Prize. Democracy Now!
"This ugly and dirty fellow is not going to vanish. He is just going behind the scenes to prepare Giulani's take over in 2008 at any costs, election cancellation included"

+++++++++++++++++++++
That last sentence of yours says it all...and I totally agree.
Dichterfreund says,
"We'll all be safe when he winds up like Moussolini's mistress, hanging next to his master."
I too agree, well-stated.
Time to sing the post-rovian theme song:
"I'M JUST A LONELY SYNAPSE IN GEORGE W. BUSH'S BRAIN"
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=170140
If all the accusations are true, is it true that none of the acts were against the law?
And if not, why has he not been prosecuted?
If 'dirty tricks' are not illegal, it would seem another way would have to be found to combat them. It doesn't appear that complaining is very effective.
Perhaps all political parties should have permanent counter-'dirty-tricks' teams.
Karl Rove's departure will now allow him to conduct his destructive abominations behind the scenes, but with less scrutiny & vulnerability. The extent of his unconscionable deeds are unprecedented. They include election fraud, character assassination (even against triple amputee Vietnam vets), and the list goes on. His dreadful antics have enabled the most inept and deceptive administration to wrought more destruction to this nation, and the world, than any previous American administration.
Americans have been grossly negligent for tolerating these dreadful outrages. If we fail to force our legislators into pursuing charges against this traitor now , we will have rewarded him and this administration for their destructive perversions--this can only lead to more of the same.
"Democracy Now!" had an excellent show today with Neomi Klein on her new book regarding extreme capitalism. www.democracynow.org
Amy Goodman, should get the Nobel Peace Prize.
I'm glad to see there are others here who don't consider Rove a "brain." As Molly Ivins said, he really wasn't all that bright. In my opinion, he didn't have the knowhow to strategize aboveboard, so he resorted consistently to crude and obvious cheating. And in our Machiavellian/Reaganite/Thatcherite country, that's considered intelligent.
On another note, I hope those of us who are planning on leaving the US are going to strategize to bring down the US from without. I agree with expatriate John Ross when he said that it's been irredeemable since Reagan became president.
It is important to expose Bush's knowledge of Rove's (and others) dirty tricks and impeach the whole Gang Of Pigs. President No, Resident Bu-shr, lies and hides behind scapegoats but is guilty. Taxation and everything else he wants to do to the American people without representation. We had one King George and got rid of him.
I know tyhis board is trolled by Republican Neofascists so, If you are a troll forward this to fat bastard Karl Roverer please.........
Hey Karl! Or should I say Karl Roverer! I have some cool newspapers I got after my grandmother passed away this past November. According to these papers your family were and still ARE Nazis! Is that true Karl? Your family built concentration camps in NAZI Germany! Looky here everybody, a NAZI has been camping his ass in OUR White House. So tell me Karl? How does it feel that many of the folk here in the US had relatives fight against the Axis Powers, and your chicken shit ass family were aiding and abetting the NAZIS! oops Your Bush clan were also NAZIS! I inherited some original NAZI uniform items too that my grandfather got during WWII after he was released from a concentration camp, I should mail them to your fat ass - I have this eeery feeling they may belong to one of your relatives!
Coffeelover
There is far too much press being written for this wretched piece of shit. To qoute Dylan in Masters of War:
I hope that you die and that your death will come soon, - and I'll stand over your casket to make sure that you're dead.
OOOPPPS! We couldn't stad over Kenny boy's casket after his mysterious "death". Maybe KKKarl, Dickwad, Rummy will all become "the dissapeared" in SA - was it Paraguay?
Perhaps Rove is going to be assisnated soon because he DID tell Cheney that he'd "sing" if anything happened to him. So let's get rid of him so that he won't be a danger to the grand plan already in play, might be Cheney's rationale since shooting people in the face is sport for him. Probably wouldn't be the first time either. Lots of folks just suddenly dropped dead during Nixon and Reagan's terms when Cheney, Rummy and the gang were in office.
In commments for another article on this topic someone mentioned that W and KKKarl both looked sad... awww, how touchin'.
If W was unhappy that his play-pal is suddenly voted off the island by Dick-daddy, I would imagine that he is either going to rise to new heights of hypocrisy and treason with impunity (making W jealous) or he's marked with targets on his temples and Georgy-boy knows it.
Better get W another new drug for this one… quick, call Rummy or that slime-bag Frist.
Thank you for the article Amy and keep up the good work on Democracy Now. We love you!!!
I've got to wonder. Just how do you suppose these criminals would have stood you against those fellows that wrote that document they've been wiping there asses with?
Thanks Amy you are a true warrior for humanity!
To link Rove's name with science is unfortunate. Undeservedly, it dirties the latter completely!
Did Rove dirty Bush? Now that is another question.
If Rove moves to Florida to engineer the election of Jeb in 2012, and if we're not all nuclear toast by then, thanks to Rovian genius politics, he should be chased into a school of sharks off the Gulf Coast, with Cheney as bait. Put Bush in an inner tube to watch the action until it's his turn.
Kristina40,
So your conclusion is that all Southerners/Floridians are stupid and inbred?
Wow... the wisdom and enlightenment you must possess to assert such a comprehensive and oversimplified bit of slander. Karl Rove will just love to have you as a neighbor. He'll probably have you over for coffee to talk shop in no time at all... 'two peas in a pod' and all that.
So is it safe to say that the rest of us can now comfortably conclude - by following your superior example of progressive and open-minded thinking - that all Northerners are insular assholes?
Rove is a perfect example of the morals and ethics of many current politicians and businessmen (And this includes many of the so called moral compasses, i.e. evangelists and preachers).
Corrupt to the core. This makes me wish there is a hell.
Lusmu, you wish there is a hell? Consider:
The seeds of pathology are embedded in all individuals and societies. Healthy, coherent people maintain mechanisms to detect and control the pathogens. When those mechanisms fail - or, more frequently, are abandoned - chaos becomes ascendant.
Like the ebola virus, the lords and agents of social chaos are intensely clever at a few things. And remarkably ignorant of all else.
Most notably, they do not grasp the final rule of chaos: it shall always consume its perpetrators.
If you think this is the last you'll ever hear of Karl Rove...
I just don't want to see his picture anymore in the paper. It makes me sick just to see his face. He's a disgrace to America. To quote the Duke of Cool from Heartbreak Ridge..."Don't go away mad...just go away..."
Rock in the Water, I came to the South with an open mind as I stated. When I got here I found the majority of people were still reliving the Civil War. Racism is the norm and sexism is a close second. So if not agreeing with their backwards view on life is not progressive or open minded enough for you, uhm, TOUGH. They don't call this place the "redneck riviera" for it's progressive ideals and fair mindedness. There are still towns within ten miles of here that my husband and I have been advised not to drive through as he's Black and the good old boys might take offense and shoot us. I've had friends here that were scared to invite us to their homes for fear of what their neighbors might do. I'd love to be proven wrong but I don't see that happening...
I remember watching a documentary about the slime ball. One part spoke about a debate he participated in during his school days. His opponent felt pretty confident with the preparations and facts he'd assembled until Rove came saundering in with a couple of boxes. He put them on the floor in front of the podium, looked up at his opponent and smiled and then left the room, came back in with more boxes. He did this several times giving the impression that the boxes had volumes of papers he was gonna use against the opponent.
His opponent got rattled and screwed up which caused Rove to win the debate. I knew what the commentator was gonna say before he even said it - the boxes? They were empty. This is typical of the neonazicon modus operandi - all bullcrap and NO substance whatsoever. Their politics are the same as their patriotism or their false religion - all a fraud!

Kristina40,
So your conclusion is that all Southerners/Floridians are stupid and inbred?
Wow… the wisdom and enlightenment you must possess to assert such a comprehensive and oversimplified bit of slander.
Not slander, a simple FACT. Just using empirical observation and seeing what has occurred in this country ESPECIALLY during the past 6 years should cement the view. The south has never stopped fighting the civil war. If it were up to me I would have them reinstitute the draft but ONLY draft from the south since they love war so much!
And something no one talks about - the 2000 election which of course bush stole anyway. Not ONE southern state went for Gore. Why? It had NOTHING to do with Gore per se. It was because his running mate was Jewish - another things the good ole boys dislike.
"If Rudy becomes president, I'll eat my hat. Not even republicans could be that stupid."
oh yes they are, Bush is president isn't he? Cheyney is Vice, how much more stupid do they need to be?
lol, oh yes they can be. The drooling fools here still pray to BillO each evening and rant and rave about WMD's in Iraq, that Bush is being picked on etc. etc.
In a bizarre way he never intended, Rove has done more to help the progressive cause in this nation than the election of Gore or Kerry ever would have accomplished. If Gore had won, he would have governed center-right, like Clinton. If Kerry had been elected in 2004, he would have been blamed for all of Bush's failures and also governed as a DLC centrist. Either way, the GOP would have been resurgent by 2008.
Thanks to Count Karlo and his stealing Ohio for Bush in 2004, though, all of the chickenhawks have come home to roost right on the Bush Regime.
Neoconservatism is dead, and the Republican Party is gasping for air. (Two of their top three candidates are, or were, liberals on social issues from Blue States.)
Although Rove may never emulate Mussolini's mistress, when the economy crashes (in progress), I don't think he'll be welcome in Florida's panhandle any longer. Perhaps he'll join Real President Dick at the lavish estate he's building in Dubai. Bush? They'll have to erect a ten-foot high electrified fence around the Worst President in History's ranch in Crawford to keep the angry mob out.
Kristina40 and Raoul,
You both missed my point entirely.
Raoul, you state that southerns did not vote for Gore because of his "Jewish" running mate. In fact, Gore received 42% or 696,741 votes in my state of Alabama; while W received 57% or 944,799. Turd blossom sold W as a "good ole southern boy from Texas" rather than the grandson of Nazi sympathizing east coast bankers. Rove is a shrewd politician who used the "praying" W to turn out the southern church vote. I groaned on more than one occasion to hear voters say they thought he was a good man because he"prayed." I always asked them, "prays to whom?" I guess the Dems just write the fundie Christian vote off; however, it would have been interesting if the Dems had run adds showing W in his Skull and Bones satanic rituals. Fair is fair. The Dems should have played the satanic card--at least many of the Christian fundies would have stayed at home rather than vote for the secret-society W. But, of course, they couldn't do that as it would have interrupted their later plans for Kerry who, by such a guage, is also satanic and belongs to the same secret order. Seems like "they" decide who our leaders will be anyway, doesn't it? Our system is, unfortunately, one of winner-take-all, and the 42% of "redneck anti-Jewish" Alabamians who voted for Gore are simply butted off the bridge as far as representation goes--not to mention the total theft that took place later with a Bush-appointed Supreme Court that said "we're stealing this election, but you can never use this case as a precedent to steal another one." Hmmmm.
But 42% in the heart of Dixie is not a bad showing if your assertion were true that his running mate's being Jewish was a problem--in fact, I think it blows a hole in your theory. Also, Nader received 18,055 votes in Alabama--one of which was mine. I did not vote for Gore for a number of reasons--one of which WAS his running mate. If I dislike a conservative asshole who happens to be Jewish, then call me any name you like. I think it is safe to say that Lieberman does not put the interests of our country first--I don't know if that is because he is a zionest or just a pro-war asshole, at any rate, if that is all the Democratic party could put up, no thanks. He is all gung-ho for the war and wants to start another one right now. I don't want a crazy F**k in office, no matter his religion. I would vote for Fiengold, but he doesn't seem like a crazy Jew to me. He seems like a good politician who happens to be Jewish or have a Jewish name. I really don't know what his religion is or how he practices it--but I've never heard anything weird about his religious practices like I have some of the others in Washington. I like his policies and I would vote for him. I don't like Lieberman and I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR THAT OLD WOMAN. Let W destroy the country, but I won't intentionally vote for another asshole to do it. If it makes me anti-semetic to detest him, then so be it.
To quote ipanek: "Sociopaths are often extremely successful, since conscience is frequently a hindrance to advancement."
What does that tell you, folks?
We need a whole new society, in which humanitarians and people of conscience are the ones who are respected and heeded. A society which sees things and people as they really are.
In such a society, people like Cindy Sheehan would be our leaders, and Rove and his henchmen would be exiled to Devil's Island where they belong.
Ephraim August 16th, 2007 1:27 am: "If Rove moves to Florida to engineer the election of Jeb in 2012, and if we're not all nuclear toast by then, thanks to Rovian genius politics, he should be chased into a school of sharks off the Gulf Coast, with Cheney as bait. There are some things even sharks won't eat.
