Bush More "Disastrous" Than Nixon
Carl Bernstein will always be known as the journalist who brought down a president whose disregard for the Constitution and the rule of law disqualified the errant executive from completing a second term in the White House. And Bernstein still gets a round of applause when mention is made of the role he played, as part of a Washington Post investigative team that also included Bob Woodward, in exposing the high crimes and misdemeanors of a president named Nixon.
But 33 years after Nixon resigned in order to avoid an inevitable impeachment -- on August 9, 1974 -- Bernstein is more concerned about a president named Bush.
When we appeared together recently at The Aspen Institute's first symposium on the political reporting of gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, Bernstein recalled the old stories of when he and Thompson were busy revealing the sordid details of Nixon's presidency.
But the Pulitzer Prize-winning author was under no illusions regarding the extent of Nixon's wrongdoing as compared with that of Bush and those around the current president.
Bernstein says that Bush's presidency has produced far more "disastrous consequences" for the country than did Nixon's.
Unlike the often crude and conniving but unquestionably intelligent and highly-engaged 37th president, Bernstein says of Bush: "He's lazy, arrogant and has little curiosity. He's a catastrophe..."
But that is not the worst part of the Bush era as compared to the Nixon era, explains Bernstein.
What has made this time dramatically more troubling, the 63-year-old journalist explains, is that "there is no oversight."
"The system worked in Watergate," Bernstein told the Denver Post.
Even after Nixon was reelected in a 49-state landslide in 1972, Bernstein said, the president was checked and balanced in the manner intended by the founders of the American experiment.
The news media investigated Nixon, and editorialized boldly when the president's lawless behaviors were exposed.
The Congress responded to those revelations with hearings and demands for White House tapes and documents. When the materials were not forthcoming, Congress went to court to force Nixon and his aides to meet those demands.
The courts responded by aggressively and consistently upholding the authority of Congress to call the president to account.
And when it became clear that Nixon was governing in contradiction to the Constitution, the U.S. House took appropriate action, with Democrats and Republicans on the Judiciary Committee voting for three articles of impeachment. Congressional Republicans, led by Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater, then went to the White House to inform their party's president that he stood little chance of thwarting an impeachment vote by the full House or surviving a trial in the Senate.
Nixon resigned and so ended a constitutional crisis created by a president's disregard for the rule of law -- a crisis that was cured by an impeachment move by House members who respected their oaths of office.
Today, says Bernstein, the system that worked in the 1970s is failing as the country witnesses presidential and vice presidential misdeeds that former White House counsel John Dean has correctly characterized as "worse than Watergate."
Referring to the media, congressional and judicial oversight that is essential to maintaining a republic, Bernstein says, "That hasn't happened here."
That failure of oversight, as opposed to any wrongdoing by George Bush or Dick Cheney, is the great tragedy of our time. But, as I reminded the crowd at the symposium during a discussion of Hunter Thompson's enthusiasm for Nixon's impeachment, it is never too late for the people to lead. Approval ratings for the current president and vice president are now below those for Nixon at the height of the Watergate scandal. And more and more members of Congress are taking up the call for accountability -- boldly sponsoring and cosponsoring the impeachment resolutions that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had tried to keep "off the table.".
Bernstein is right. The system has not worked up to now. But with 18 months to go, it is certainly not too late for Americans to demand that the medicine that cured the Constitutional crisis of 33 years ago should again be applied.
John Nichols' new book is The Genius of Impeachment: The Founders' Cure for Royalism. Rolling Stone's Tim Dickinson hails it as a "nervy, acerbic, passionately argued history-cum-polemic [that] combines a rich examination of the parliamentary roots and past use of the 'heroic medicine' that is impeachment with a call for Democratic leaders to 'reclaim and reuse the most vital tool handed to us by the founders for the defense of our most basic liberties.'"

Show AllW's worse than Tricky Dick you say. Hell,he's worse than our next worst president, Bill Klanton, who tore up the social safety and net and bombed much of the Balkans back to the Stone Age, and Al Gore was backing him all the way on his war crimes against Yugoslavia and its people and the destruction of a great nation and ally of ours in the war against the Nazi tyranny, the worst in history.
Regarding Sir Melvin's remarks about Hitler, whom he regards as somewhat "extreme" but, on the whole an alright kind of guy...
Hitler's "justifications for invasion" WERE "based on robbery and the paranoia that Germany would be attacked." One has but to consult the historical record on this, based on the massive documents still extant of the criminal schemings
of the Third Reich. In point of fact EVERY GERMAN invasion was based on preposterous claims of Hitler that Germany had the right to protect itself from aggression ... in the case of Poland, the Czech Republic, Denmark, even the Soviet Union with which it had a non-aggression pact at the time. Moreover, lands the Germans seized were meant to provide
"living space" for the worthy members of the "master race," as Hitler sets forth in MEIN KAMPT, and as "Sir" Melvin damn well knows. The elite worthies of this group helped themselves very freely to the bounties of these lands, as, again, the historical record verifies. (Some might call the robbery). Once the Third Reich had established its NEW EUROPEAN ORDER (ring any bells?), whole nations of "subhuman beings" were to be "turned into great slave pens to serve the master race." This was to include all of Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union, etc. This again from documentary evidence discovered after the fall of Germany, and disclosed by such eminent historians as William Shirer. As
for the contention that Hitler "never lost popularity in Germany even when the Germans were facing inevitable defeat," popularity in
a terrorist state with a single state run media committed to enforcing the Furher's popularity is a whole different matter than, say, popularity in a state with a free press.
I have no doubt that this criminal cabal in Washington look at Hitler's control of media
and salivate. The coup that Prescott Bush,
George W's grandfather, planned was to be based on fascist Germany. So coup making and
Hitler loving is a family tradition. Has it been remarked that Prescott helped pick and launch Nixon's career?
Islamic fascism provokes its counterpart, Christian fascism of which Bush is the leading perpetrator. Why else would he send Cheney to Pakistan earlier this year if not to deliberately destabilize Pakistan, overthrow Musharref and provoke war with India, so Bush could then be free to nuke at will and impose "Armageddon" upon the World, madman that he is!
fantastic and erudite posts. I'm sure there is a confusion between antisemitism and zionism that is unintentional. However inadequately the most of us express ourselves from time to time, I believe and find it fascinating that our thoughts and comprehension of events are so united, and that gives me hope.
comparisons aside, and in all fairness to the assorted criminals mentioned here, criminals one and all irregardless, let's not forget that Bush is in large part merely a tool for large corporate interests whose motives are essentially immoral and greedy. With all the loot spent on war and such global poverty could, for example, be eliminated, but that isn't the plan. Bush is just another one of those tools who's been trained to do his job, there's not too much independent thought there.
Many of us shy as far away as possible from any kind of corporate interaction, whether that's the automobile, or television, or the media, or the work we try to do for subsistence, because we recognize our activity with corporate interests have lost any semblance of truth and beauty, or freedom, or independence, or what have you. It's an enticing path to search out your own enrichment without understanding the effects of that behavior on our brothers and sisters who inhabit the globe along with us.
as far as dissent being recognized, too many of us are locked hopelessly into the system and protesting is out of the question because there isn't any time or resources for it and because we've been trained by our schools and institutions that the system will correct itself. elderly people, for example, can't boycott the automobile or fuel oil, two major linchpins in the corporate system, because they would be helpless without them. it's everyone for themselves the way the game is rigged here.
Our system has failed to work this time due to a lot of factors. The news media is not the same as it was in the 70's. They are now run by corporate America who are mostly Republican. Who gears the news to the Republican party's liking. For the most part the news is utterly useless these days in informing the public about what goes on in Washington. You can't blame journalist's for the problem, they are being gaged by their corporate employers. When you have a small amount of corporations owning all the news sources, this is what happens. Wholesale ignorance of the population! The American people in the 70's knew right from wrong! They knew Nixon was a crook and took action. I literally have no faith left in the American people to know what is right and wrong anymore! They took one of the most corrupt Presidents in the history of this country and reelected him in 2004! His track record at this point spoke for itself. If this country had any moral's he would have lost in a landslide for Kerry! If a person says they are a Christian that automatically makes them a desirable person for office. People do not bother to look any further into someone's character to see if what they are saying is the truth. They assume because that's what they say they are, they have character. Which is one of the biggest fallacies on the political scene these days. When the American people start demanding that their leaders be held accountable for their crimes...that is when the system will change back to the 70's again. But, so far, only a few of us isolated people have demanded Bush/Cheney be impeached.
With no latter-day Thompsons/Bernsteins/Woodwards doing their 'jobs' or any major media outlet publishing true investigative journalism, today's Congress, conveniently as it seems for it, has no 'evidence' to go on.
Impeachment isn't on the table, the table hasn't any legs yet.
Nixon actually had an opposing party back then which followed the constitution and was about to impeach him. Bush has the support of Democrats on everything he wishes to destroy and every law he wishes to break. Bush is not only more disastrous but also way more dangerous.
Wow, in what amounts to a beauty contest, it looks like Nixon wins over Bush in such a landslide that in a battle of most evil, Nixon has been replaced by Hitler so as to produce at least some debate.
Clearly, Bush, by virtue of harm done in terms of lives lost, rule of law subverted, incompetence, and most importantly, lasting effects of his existence throughout the world, is the worst US President ever.
I suppose it is some consolation to all of us that he was really never elected, but he is still our responsibility. So do we behave like "good Germans" or do we stop him with the only means available to us?
We have to withhold our money from this asshat. Stop paying taxes that he will either kill with or steal flat out. Stop spending money with his wealthy corporate puppetmasters. Stop being slaves in the cleptocracy.
KEM,
Dorian Gray can't hold a candle to a picture of the evil Siamese twins Cheney/Bush placing crowns on each other's heads. That's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre cleverly disguised as an Elmer Fudd cartoon, and sadly there are a huge amount of people out there who don't comprehend the difference, OR understand the threat.
To the anti-Semites crawling out of their holes and spreading their filth on Commondreams - Isn't there an "antisemitic dreams" site? I'm sure there is, an online forum where you Hitler-lovers can talk about how "wonderful" Hitler was, and how history and almost everyone continues to misunderstand him.
I don't share the optimism of my fellow progressives when it comes to the Internet providing an "alternative" to the corporate-controlled MSM. It sure does, but it also helps neo-Nazis and anti-Semites spread their propaganda, lies and hate. I'm sure it has been a mostly lonely existence being an anti-Semite, until the Internet helped bring these screwballs together. Other crazies and far-right extremists, who see the MSM as being controlled by evil "bolshevik" Jews absolutely love the Internet, judging by the number of hate-sites in Cyberworld. Again, why are you here? Do you think you will win any followers here on commondreams? There are many anti-Zionists here, but that largely has nothing to do with anti-Semitism. Go back to your favorite hate sites and hate blogs where you belong.
I have to say, this powerful article has become a footnote to the amusing, and at times depressing discussion following it. The article was about comparing Bush to Nixon, yet it seems everyone really wants to compare Bush to HITLER! lol.. sorry, don't mean to interrupt, I see the similarities between Bushism and fascism too, but what a way to get off topic. Hopefully we can do something to prevent America from becoming the 4th Reich, and soon!
Bu$h the inferior has many enablers including Congress, the media, and the courts. He also has Shotgun Dick.
Nixon had few enablers and Agnew was the weak link that fell first.
Bush still has all his loyal minions.
sjc_1, You may be right about Bush admiring Nixon, but did you forget when asked who his favorite philosopher was, he said, Jesus! Can`t you just imagine Jesus destroying the Holy Land and a good share of the people in it, torturing them and attempting to rule their country and steal their oil, all the while preaching how wonderful his actions are for everyone?
This catastrophy is more than Bush alone. Google 'Santa Clara County vs. Southern Pacific Railroad' to see where the Fascism cane from and http://www.theocracywatch.org/ to see what the Evilgellicals have in store for humanity.
My recently departed Mother's (an unreconstructed Roosevelt Democrat) most fervent wish was for the entire Bush Clan to be exiled to "that dirt farm in Texas" and be rendered so poor that "all they would have to eat at Christmas is a bag of turnips"..."and make sure that old bitch Mother is there, too!"
Love you Mom!

And then there's this bumper sticker. Check this web site: http://www.libertystickers.com/bush_makes_me_miss_nixon.htm
"A big long blog blasting all American Jews."
Unabashed white supremacists are attempting to turn resistance to the racists of AIPAC/Israel into grist for their mill. This gives the Lieberman-Dershowitz-DLC propagandists more "proof" that opposition to fascist Israel is itself fascist.
One of the great differences between the present and 1973-74 is the founding of the neocons, their assimilation of the old conservative organs, and the wholesale acceptance of their racist cuckoos -- Krauthammer & Kristol et al -- as responsible political commentators.

I see the self annointed "Sir" Melvin Cleopuss has crawled out of his pit. This is the fake Knight, who last week wrote that all Jews were scum and they should all have their hooked noses replaced so they wouldn't be so ugly. A big long blog blasting all American Jews.
Funny,I wrote Bush was WORSE than Hitler, and so many want a debate about a comparrison with the pair. Hmmmm, readng comp anyone?
Letters, phone calls, petitions, marches haven't worked. How about boycotting his donors(see link for top contributors, and also click on top fund-raisers)? Money is everything to this group; why should we give it to those who are abetting this monster? Boycotts worked wonders to produce civil rights legislation in this country, and reformed South Africa's policy of apartheid.

Nixon was a canny, sneaky, crook. Mentally unbalanced and opportunistic but he quit when he saw no way out.
George is also insane but he is a true believer whose delusions of spiritual and political grandeur have infected some thirty percent of the public. Everybody is afraid to attack him because so many people consider him a "Man of God".
George believes in himself---no matter how stupidly he handles a press conference he thinks he nailed it. Nixon was the quintessential thief. George is the quintessential mass murderer on a mission from God.
'When fasacism comes to America, it will come wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross."
It's not exactly credit to us that Hitler actually possessed better personal qualities than Bush; he was taken by messianic ambitions, and taken up by the class from which Shrub originates. They were both underestimated by people who believed themselves too protected by their national virtues to be guilty of vast crimes, but both embodied the fundamental horrors of systematic exploitation concealed by ideologies of national purpose & glory.
When the Watergate investigations began, also, the country was still on the boil with revolutionary fervor, and at the time it wasn't known whether it would continue or would subside. From 1973-1976, the ruling class took the occasion to make it appear that they could be trusted again. "I'll never lie to you" was the mantra of the man who hired Zbigniew Brzezinksi & sent the first assistance to the mujahedin in Afghanistan.
The point is that even if Pelosi does bring the articles of impeachment, which she ought to, against the regime, nonetheless the same problems will meet us another quarter century down the road if the economic power relations remain the same. It's their continuance that provided Bob Woodward with his career path from investigator to enabler, which allowed the young Hilary Rodham and the young Bill Blythe Clinton to spice up their bourgeois ambitions with some progressive elements.
Sir Melvin Cleophus says 1) Hitler's views were pretty common among most people in Europe at that time; 2) the European Jews really put the hurts to the Germans for over a century; 3) Hitler saved Germany from economic failure and starvation; and 4) Bush Jr. believes Jews are the most saintly people to have ever walked the planet.
This is all false.
1) Very Few Europeans endorsed virulent anti-Semitism;
2) The Jews were not enemies of Germany;
3) Hitler did not save the German economy any more than Roosevelt cured the U.S. depression; and
4) Bush likes Israel, not necessarily Jews.
bush passed nixon 5 yrs ago, when he caught up to hitler.
BUSH IS THE GREATEST THREAT TO LIFE ON EARTH.
He has NO checks and balances, and recently signed: Presidential Directive 51 granting him total power if country is declared under martial law; legislation for warrantless surveillance, which despite the b.s. rhetoric, is aimed at American citizens; legislation permitting him to seize property and assets of anyone (including Americans) suspected of being an "enemy combatant". Not to mention Cheney's Halliburton has built numerous prisons throughout the U.S., wonder why... He is bankrupting this country, and with all the saber rattling at Iran he may well opt for PD 51 and call the '08 election off.
Interesting info on grandad Prescott on this link.
http://www.smirkingchimp.com/thread/9012
Good thing to see Bernstien still fighting the good fight...to bad Woodward became a watercarrier for the Neocons.
Its obvious who was REALLY pulling the weight between the two in the '70s
Hey Melvin,
If you love Hitler so much, join him. I have some matches you can use.
Hilter was a paranoid little twerp, just like Bush, who staged a false flag operation to gain power, just like Bush, and who used propoganda to emflame the masses against a racial minority element in the population, just like Bush, who rounded them up and disappeared them, just like Bush. Of course, Hilter gassed and incinerated millions of them, and we dont really know where Bush has sent his....but give Bush time...Hitler had 15 or so years, Herr Bush has only been in power 7.
Sir Melvin, thanks for the history lesson, which most Americans sorely need. But I believe when you hear talk about "comparing Bush to Hitler," I don't think the comparisons are of the MEN as much as of their TACTICS, which are without question the same: the Politics of Fear. I only hope that after six years of hearing Dubya cry "wolf" every time his neocon puppetmasters need to further their insane agenda, Americans are wising up to this game and will react more rationally if (when?) there is another terrorist attack here.
RE: Sir Melvin Cleophus August 9th, 2007 4:08 pm
While I am aware & agree with a number of the historical differences between Bush & Hitler there is a point to be made about the similarities based on fascist, totalitarian, and nationalistic world domination philosophies of the two men.
I do take exception to the fact that just because we are Americans (Bush included) we are all responsible for the mayhem BushCo has created worldwide. There are mnay Americans (tens of millions atually and more waking up each day) who reject not only his policies, but even the claim that he has a right to represent us in the international community. He was never elected by the people of this country at all, and frankly he's our worst embarrassment. He is a usurper who siezed control, much the same as Hitler did in the earlly thirties. How's that for an indisputable comparison?
I would hope there are enough people in this world with enough information & intelligence to not lump all Americans indiscriminately together with such a tyrant based soley on the location of our birth. There are many here that would like nothing better than a peaceful world, with all humans free of want, but just as decent people in Hitler's Germany were ridden rough shod over, shouted down, and had to go through a couple decades of turmoil before they could cast the Nazi terror aside we are in the same struggle against the fascists right now. We will win, though, because for our sake (and the world's) we have no choice than to beat these monsters.
Sir Melvin, good stuff. Though let's not canonize Hitler just yet. He was a kook, despite the good he did. The ends do not justify the means, my friend, and that brings us inexorably to Bush 43. That guns cannot bring about democracy might be a corollary to that basic moral law.
Anyway, while you're at the business of correcting American misperceptions of WWII, why not bring up the fact that Jews may have had little to do with our participation in the war.
Afterall, we knew what Hitler was doing in the 30s. One can read Congressional records from the 1930s and see that our government knew about the whole sordid business. The question is, then, why did we declare war on Germany only in the 1940s after Pearl Harbor?
One possible answer is that the war against Germany had little to do with saving Jews against atrocity and had more to do with making sure the economic resources of Europe did not fall under the exclusive control of Joseph Stalin -- an unacceptable outcome.
Afterall, Hitler was our friend. Corporations in America and Germany, allied with the Fascist State, were buddy buddy before, through and after the war was over. Bush 43's grnadfather Prescott Bush was a banker for Nazi Germany. Henry Ford was a hero to Hitler, who had his picture on his desk. Etc.
On a philosophical level, the corporate interests that exert inordinate control on American policy are not much different from the fascists that were in power then. A natural fit. Corporatism and fascism are very very similar. Anyone who works for a major corporation understands this immediately at a gut level.
Anyway, Hitler was a terrible kook and a sociopathic killer. He was also a great statesman who did great things for his country. Ditto Joseph Stalin, who is also beloved to this day by may Russians. Both men were scum of the Earth despite their accomplishments. Greatness in one area does not lessen the horror of human abominations in other areas.
Some sins cannot be forgiven.
I just finished researching various articles on PNAC (Project for a New American Century) & the people involved, and it is effectively some of the most insidious terrorism I have ever heard of. These guys are intent on nothing less than world conquest & domination...by any & all means.
They will lie, cheat, kill, invade pre-emptively, spy illegally, use WMD indiscriminately against civilians, rig elections, bribe, assasinate & murder, break long standing international treaties, torture, empty our treasury, mock righteous religious people by using religion as a foil/tool for their criminal acts, let our infrastructure fall apart to expand the military & extend corporate dominance over our culture, obfuscate facts using paid schills, rape the environment for a buck, profile anyone in their way, stack the courts with their stooges, destroy our economy, lower our standard of living, start false flag wars, raise an illegal army of mercenaries, defy Congress, stifle dissent, intimidate the opposition, ruin the morale of our military, and probably set off a nuclear bomb in an American city to retain control of America. All this is under the guise of 'helping' America. This is a ruse. They only care about themselves and don't give a rats ass about anyone not in their warped cabal.
The worst part of it all is it is planned long ago and intentional. Bush is worse than Hitler and much more dangerous to America. With Hitler, once he was revealed for the monster he was almost the whole world rose up to defeat him. With the BushCo/PNAC crowd who is there to oppose them? They have pretty much a 'lock' on financial, physical, corporate, media, and military resources. They still have a significant portion of the population buffaloed & supportive (brainwashed if you will). The radical right-wing fundamentalist Christian community still view him as their 'savior' incarnate against the evil subscribers of Islam, God led & inspired, and don't give a damn if they have to destroy the world to save it because they are counting on the 'rapture' for their redemption. Very dangerous foes indeed, equally as dangerous as any Islamic suicide bomber for Allah.
All is not lost, however. Despite a planned & intentionally controlled MSM the truth about these madmen has trickled out, and the trickle has now become a flood soaking everyone's feet. Sure, they will destroy an American city in a last ditch effort, but just like more & more people have come to the realization something is stinking rotten about the whole 911 WTC event fewer & fewer people will be so gullible by fear to believe the new act of internal terrorism was anyone other than the same terrorist enemies we have been facing right here in America for the past 6+ dreadful years...BushCo, the neo-CONS, and subscribers to PNAC, many of whom are the exact same people who have actually been around since that other Republican crook (Nixon) was in office.
With the Nixon part, Bush seems more criminal than Nixon was.
vinlander:
I agree that Bush and Hitler should not be compared. As someone who lives in Europe, Holland to be exact, I think it is wrong to compare Bush with Hitler. If people outside Europe truly understood 19th Century European History from Germany's point of view (as the Germans truly were victims of oppression for more than a century before Hitler came into power), they would not view Hitler so harshly. Most throughout Europe today view Hitler an extremiist in dealing with the problems that Germany faced at the time. That was true. However, no one in Europe, except France, had any doubt that the Germans were suffering economically, before Hitler came in to power, for well over a century. It was the fault of France also that the Germans were on the brink of starvation and broke, as France occupied Germany up to the time of Hitler being elected. Did not know that did you Americans? Bet most Americans did not know either that European Jews were considered the "upper-class" throughout Europe for many years, and that anti-semitism was a relatively common sentiment throughout Europe. But no...Americans want to think of WW2 in the framework of poor European Jews and evil vicious Germans. What Hitler did was extreme, yes; but his views were pretty common among most people in Europe at that time.
Again there are more differences between Hitler and Bush than there are similarities. First, Germany justifications for invading nations were not based on robbery or paranoia that they will be attacked. Hitler's justifications for invasion were based on settling REAL scores. Groups of people in Europe (i.e. the French and European Jews) really put the hurts to the Germans - bad - for over a century! Far worse, and longer, than al-Qaeda has done to you Americans in their mere fifteen minute action against you. Yet Americans dare call Germans horrible people for, at the time, punishing REAL enemies?
Second, Hitler was generally smarter and more charismatic than George W. Bush Jr. was. As painful as it is for most Americans to accept, Hitler NEVER lost popularity in Germany; even when the Germans was facing inevitable defeat. On the contrary, some Germans were even willing to die for Hitler while witnessing Berlin being in ruins.
Third, Hitler was an author, as well as a soldier, before he became leader of Germany. I don't recall George W. Bush Jr. ever writing a book or fighting in a battle. He may need help with proper English before writing a book. Actually reading would help also. He should go to Iraq and fight along with his men in the spirit of Genghis Khan and Alexander the Great. His military men need their Commander in Chief over in Iraq for success and victory.
Fourth, Hitler saved Germany from economic failure and starvation via warfare. The George W. Bush Jr. is creating the opposite effect in the USA as a result of his wars.
Of course, last but not least (and this in regards to the first point) Hitler could not stand European Jews and Bush Jr. believes they are the most saintly people to have ever walked the planet and are the "prefered culture" over all others in American opinion. Let's face it, to Bush Jr. it is not the European Jews who should go extinct, as they are the "Holy People!" Instead, it is Palestinians and Iraqis who are the real filth in the world in the opinion of both Bush Jr. and Americans. Do not deny this either Americans. Your taxes have paid for the misery of Iraq for more than 15 years and your taxes have paid for the systematic oppression of Palestinians (ironically from the number 1 enemy of Hitler) for over six decades.
Hitler and Bush have more differences than similarities.
The real reason the system worked to chase Nixon out was because of the one component missing today: large, loud public displays of disaffection nearly everyday. Instead of hitting the streets and stopping traffic and drawing attention and monkeywrenching the system and, most importantly - scaring the crap out of incumbents - we kick back and wonder why the fascists are winning when "the polls" clearly show Americans aren't big fans of the whole King Loonitary Decider thing.
If you truly believe this is an emergency situation, then react accordingly. Stop paying taxes, boycott the enablers, spend the least amount possible, organize a weekly "corner march" downtown, warn everyone you see that America is on the brink, join right-wing-hate sites and throw body punches on their comment boards, leak if you're inside, or, better yet, quit today.
If you think it'll all work out on the other hand, by all means, don't lift a finger.
Impeachment is stalled because the representatives in Congress do not represent us.
I strongly suggest you consider supporting the National Initiative for Democracy proposed by Mike Gravel in which the people claim direct power to legislate. Personally, I believe this is the best way to rise above the doldrums of disenfranchisement, and take the bull by the horns for change.
If we can get the National Initiative for Democracy going, the people could impeach Bush directly and to heck with a feckless, spineless, listless and unrepresentative Legislature.
Here is the web site: http://ni4d.us/
Puck Pelosi! IMPEACH Bush, Cheney, Gonzales, Rice, et al; NOW!!
Kivals, that is why he is worse than Hitler, the medical experts are correct. DU is worse than the bombs we dropped on Japan.
A website from a wonderful nurse, Linda Kroll. Read it all, there are websites given with doctors frightening observations. DU is the final words for weapons of mass destruction___ and Bush knows it!
Bush admired Nixon and Reagan admired Coolege, this says something to me. If a person admires someone from the past, that means to me that they think that they did the right things.
I think G.W. admired Nixon for his cunning and ability to keep most things secret. The discipline in both their staffs is similar. Maybe that is what we should ask our next potential President, who they admire most and why. We can then hope that we get a truthful answer.
It is wrong to compare George W. Bush to Adolf Hitler. Hitler was a decorated war hero.
Comparing Bush/any Bush to Nixon is like comparing Hitler to someone guilty of a seatbelt infraction.
Kem Patrick,
Bush cannot yet be compared to Hitler, but if he nukes Iran or if DU turns out to be as deadly as some medical experts think, drastically shortening the life of most Iraqis as well as US service personnel, he will be giving Adolf a run for his money.
Watergate wasn't "directed at a small group of people;" you only have to be familiar with the Nixon "Huston Plan" to understand that.
It's potential was every bit as much fascist as Bush's agenda. Was bombing Cambodia and Laos friendlier than invading Iraq?
Maybe some think that "Operation Phoenix" wasn't torture?
The times simply permitted Nixon a smaller theater of operation -- and luckily we had a bit of a free press left at that time, though it was pretty much a myth after the coup on JFK.
Bush has more elbow room than Nixon did and in that sense the siutation is worse.
The media in '68 were quite pleased to toast the "New Nixon", but Nixon & Agnew both had scores to settle with them, and it was that vendetta that largely led to the impeachment. That, and having gone along perpetually with extensions of the war against Vietnam, the Dems were glad to have a scandal that, unlike Vietnam, didn't highlight their complicity in state crimes.
Impeaching Cheney-Bush would require a close look at the collaboration of major Democratic senators and representatives in Bush's crimes.
We have no friends in the military-media-industrial complex; as the old song says, no God, Cesar or tribune is going to come to our rescue.
First, you need to ask youselves very carefully WHY the system hasn't worked this time.
Bush is more disatrous than Hitler, Vlad the Impaler, Ghengis Khan, Tojo and Saddam combined. And they were all intelligent men.
The Watergate break in was directed at a small group of people. Bush & Cheney have lied and defrauded everyone.
Impeach the Terrorists!!!!
No kidding! We all know its worse than Watergate!
The powerful evil idiot is worse. That has finally been proven.
The only reason George Bush is dropping bombs on innocent civilian Muslims is because... if he were herding them into gas chambers, somebody would stop him.
I find some of the blogs here amusing also "peaceintruth", that's one reason why I love this website. BTW what did Nixon have to do with the the U.S. becoming the 4th Reich? Ohhh, did you mean Bush and the 4th Reich? Isn't that comparing Bush to Hitler, Sir Melvin Cleoprik's hero?
I guess I had a difficult time comparing Bush to Nixon, because I do not believe, we've had any president, who could in any reasonable manner, as far as being a human being is concerned, be compared to GW Bush. I don't know what is going to happen during the next eighteen months, or the next eighteen minutes. I, like everyone else can only surmise, with educated or un-educated guesses, based upon what we can see with our own eyes. Since I only have one eye now, it's more difficult for me to see.
If any would care to seach through the archives here and look up what Paul M Smith predicts for our next eighteen months under the Bush command, Paul gives a pretty good picture, for me, and it's as frightening as the picture of Dorian Gray.
Anyway, in my most humble opinion, Bush is worse than Hit#### ___uhhhh, worse than a black mamba__ in my bed.__ Howz that?
Bush is much more worse than Nixon!!!!!
How many more days till he's gone?
Too Many!!!!!
Another thing that REALLY gets me is how much of a buffoon Bush is compared to Nixon, yet it looks like Bush will get away with everything and not face impeachment. Nixon didn't come from a rich, powerful political family. From a poor family, he had to pull himself up by his own boot-straps and was a very clever, ruthless individual. He even got accepted into Harvard, but couldn't attend due to lack of funds(the scholarship didn't cover all the costs). Nixon ended up committing some serious crimes as a result of his extreme arrogance and lust for power. He overestimated his own political genius. Anyway, this is aside from the obvious that Bush is 100 times WORSE than Nixon by just about any measure.
The question is: What is worse, powerful evil geniuses, or powerful evil idiots?

If you revise #4 to read, "Bush likes Zionists & Mossad, but just like he feels about any other humans he doesn't give a damn about the Jews", I am pretty much in agreement with you.
