Time's Up, Congress! Impeach, Now!
Our Constitution established a tri-partite system of government, with the notion that each branch of government would act as a check on the other two. Unfortunately, for the last six years, the Republicans in Congress have largely viewed themselves as defenders of the Bush Administration, instead of a vital check on overreaching by the Executive Branch. By doing so, I believe they have acted to the detriment of our Constitutional form of government.
We have seen so many transgressions by this Administration that it is easy to forget last week's scandal amid this week's new outrage. I am hopeful that compiling all of these events of the last few years will help wake all of us up to the gravity of these matters and the cumulative damage to our country.
--Congressman John Conyers, Constitution in Crisis July 31, 2006
Congressman Conyers wrote this brilliant and stinging indictment of BushCo almost a year ago. The booklet outlines and expounds on the crimes of the Bush Regime, and my question for him the last time we met in May, was: What has the President and Vice President done since the Dems regained both houses of Congress in January to miraculously become "innocent" of treason and other high crimes and misdemeanors?
Today we march from Arlington to Congress.
We arrived in DC yesterday from Crawford, Texas after two weeks of our journey.
Twenty-five (sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less) of us have traveled from town to town where we were almost universally welcomed with a small amount of protest mostly in the form of the foul-mouthed and gnarly-breathed, Gathering of Eagles (they call us "hippies" "dirty"). All along the way we have encountered our fellow Americans who are sick and fed up with the crimes of BushCo and the slaughter in the Middle East.
Today we will march from Arlington Cemetery where absolutely no desecration is planned by our group, but where desecration has been committed on a daily basis by the neocon war mongers who use our troops unwisely, illegally, immorally and for monetary and political expediency.
When we arrive at Congressman John Conyer's (D-Mi, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee) office today we will arrive with over one million signatures on petitions to impeach George Bush and Dick Cheney. We will arrive with the sentiments of the majority of Americans on our side. We will arrive with a thirst for justice and armed with the truth and compassion for our children serving in Iraq and our brothers and sisters who have had to suffer there under the corporate greed of US war profiteers.
The other day in San Diego, Rep. Conyers told an audience that he would go forward with impeachment if 3 other members joined him, well he has 15 other members already signed on H(Res) 333 which is Articles of Impeachment for Dastardly Dick introduced by Rep. Dennis Kucinich. Both Rep. Conyers and Speaker Pelosi need to be reminded of what their constitutional duties are and must be forced to act now before it is too late. I wonder how many more of our troops and Iraqis they are willing to sacrifice on the altar of partisan politics?
Today there will be dozens of us who will sit-in Congressman Conyer's office until he agrees to do the right thing and we will risk arrest if he doesn't. We are doing it because we profoundly believe that accountability in the form of impeachment is imperative to restore the rule of law and to protect the future from an executive branch that has run amok.
We march for peace. We sit for accountability.
On Tuesday, July 24th, I may become a candidate in California's 8th district. The balls' in Congress' court now. I hope they come through for us.

Show AllCindy, you go, girl! Our prayers...and our actions...are with you. Will you answer A.N.S.W.E.R.'s call for unity?
Keep it up, Cindy! Honest people must insist on a change of behavior from the corrupt murderers in Washington.
I suspect the game is going to change a bit when Cindy hands in those 1 million signatures. That strikes me as a high number for these type petitions. Then, the one person you want to turn it in is Cindy Sheehan, or a troop.
We need to keep the heat on Congress, not let this thing fade into the news of the day.
Conyer's is frightened. They all are (except maybe Dennis Kucinich) including Pelosi...and with good cause! This administration has shown in the past how they deal with dissenters (Valerie Plame, Scott Ritter, etc.) and it will take a Herculean amount of courage especially when going after any of the Neo-Conservative upper echeleon. In addition to the Bush response, if it does happen, watch the MSM closely which will certainly vilify everyone involved in the impeachment process.
Good luck Cindy!

and an appeal to the essence of being."

Thanks Cindy for standing up to those who have violated the Rule of Law and that continue to insult our intelligence with repeated lies and manipulation with impudence. Our political system is broken, with most of the Democrats beholden to the same corporations that the Republicans serve the interest of, but I believe that we the people deserve to know the Truth of this "War on Terra" and the systematic politicization of the Judicial Branch and so many other usurpations of the Rule of Law too numerous to list.
You are our hero.
Phone Chairman Conyers at 202-225-5126 and ask him to start the impeachment of Dick Cheney; and phone your own Congress Member at 202-224-3121 and ask them to immediately call Conyers' office to express their support for impeachment. Your Congress Member might be one of the three needed, not just to keep impeachment activists out of jail but to keep this nation from devolving into dictatorship.
And don't stop there! e-mail too. Clog everything up!
Call your members of Congress now toll free at 866-338-1015, 800-459-1887 or 800-614-2803
NOW! Do it NOW!
Wonder if the executive order Bush signed this week will be enforced on cindy? He may have written it because of her.
Congress, et al....will not start impeachment
of Bush. With all the abuse and arrogance
thrust in their faces , let alone the populace
of our country....don't you wonder...why they
have all "tippy toed" around this issue that
should have been done at least in 2005? I
believe the reason is...."they are all afraid
of throwing the gauntlet...because they "know"
that he has taken over...and are afraid to
find out"!!! No, the dummies will wait until
middle of next year...when "simpleton" comes
on tv declaring martial law...no time for
elections now!!!!
Come on you hypocrites ("bad for the country-rationalization blather")hardly anyone over
the age of 60 - 65 even recognize this country
anymore...so let's face it and find out and
then deal with the truth of the matter.
You impeached Clinton... when a little head never hurt anybody!
My bumper sticker; I'll take it to the Kodak Picturemaker or Fuji Dye-Sub printer that prints waterproof 8x10s, and I get 2 or 3 bumper stickers out of each print. ((2.6"or4") x 10")
Make your own bumper sticker in a photo or drawing program a personal statement!
I still read comments from the typical ignoramus asking for the reasons why Bush and Cheney should be impeached, take your pick:
1) Authorizing the NSA wiretapping of Americans in clear violation of the FISA law;
2) Authorizing the torture of prisoners of war in clear violation of the Geneva Convention and thereby placing our own soldiers at greater risk of being tortured themselves;
3) Authorizing and attempting to cover up the outing of CIA spy Valerie Plame (clearly an act of treason) for political retribution (her husband was critical of the invasion of Iraq)
4) For actively and systematically seeking to deceive citizens and Congress about an alleged threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction and an alleged relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda and for openly threatening aggression against Iran (as discussed in House Res. 333)
5) Incompetence in their conduct of the war in Iraq (yes they can be impeached just for screwing up) since as Joe Biden rightly put it, "they have not been right about one thing" in regards to their policy in Iraq;
6) Firing U.S. prosecutors for political reasons;
7) Commuting the sentence of law breaker Scooter Libby found guilty of breaking the law by his obstruction of justice… and on and on.
Each of these acts and others justify impeachment on their own merit but together they indicate a clear lack of respect for the people and the laws of our constitution that they have sworn to uphold.
The actions of this administration are fascist.
It is my opinion that to ignore impeachment for such crimes is akin to supporting such crimes and an admission that our constitution is merely a piece of paper with no merit.
Evelyn, I'm sure he will try every trick in the book, and if it's not in the book he'll make it up anyway. This is going to be a long hard fought struggle. It's just beginning and the world is watching with trepidation. It's up to us to rid ourselves of this "monster on the move".
Interesting point Evelyn, probably a bunch more Excecutive Orders already written up he's about to spew forth as he sees his position of power and privilege increasingly being questioned by those of us with a modicum of common sense and shows himself to be the petty little tyrant he always was.
If bush does have Cindy arrested, things could get very ugly in a hurry.
Thank you Cindy!!!
Open letter to Speaker Pelosi:
I just watched Reid say that we have 17 months left for the administration...17 months for the constitution to be locked up...
not free on bail...pending appeal...but locked up...why not commute
the sentence? How about a full pardon for our constitution?
Isn't one day of unconstitutional life excessive? 17 months?
Good lord!!! He also said that you will continue to try to get the president to change course...what was that difinition of insanity?...doing the same thing over and over expecting different
results? Yes that was it. Or as the king has said...fool me...um...whatever. Perhaps he would change course and listen a bit
more (or even listen at all) if you would just put impeachment back where it belongs...as the just and peaceful process our founding fathers gave us to insure our liberty against a tyrant.
I want to echo the sentiment of many
of my fellow Americans. We are not as concerned about
left and right politics as we are about doing the
right thing for our country and our constitution on
which it rests. You have every legitimate reason to
change your course and put impeachment on the
table...as a centerpiece of justice and democracy in
action. What shall I tell the children of this country
when asked why the president can admit to violating
federal laws
(warentless wiretaping) and nobody puts an end to it?
Do we really think he should be able to? What
justification is there to let anyone commit crimes on
such a massive scale? I understand you may have a
conflict of interest if by chance both Cheney and Bush
were removed....so recuse yourself. Lots of Americans
have been forced out of work for far less compelling
reasons and yet never given any credit for it...you
would be celebrated and loved by millions of people
loyal
to our rule of law and our sense of fairness. Is it
really too much to ask to protect us from a further
decline into a neo-con nightmare? They have given you
the last straw on a platter...by refusing to comply or
enforce contempt charges...they have rendered
oversight where they are involved, meaningless and
futile. They have given you a golden moment....you
have no choice! We do not and will not obey a
king...even if he wants to call himself the president.
We the people will start issuing signing statements
that his executive orders don't apply to us and are
unconstitutional. I plead with you again to educate
the public on this issue and consider this matter to
be of grave importance as do so many good Americans.
We the People are waiting...on the left and on the right and
in the middle of the road. Don't let the constitution get run over.
Gathering of Eagles...Did you know that Eagles live on Carrion? (they eat the dead things they find)
they are feasting from the mess this president leaves
Evelyn Smith,
I HOPE they DO arrest Cindy Sheehan and things get very ugly very fast.
I for one am quite willing to go to jail.
I'm unemployed, rapidly approaching eviction, and mad enough to chew stovewood.
There is no time better IMHO than TODAY for mass public protest that will bring this country to a halt.
all the best
Woohoo! Go Cindy!
And now if we can get Cynthia McKinney to run for president as an indie or Green....
http://myspace.com/draftmckinney2008
Who is willing to die for our Constitution? That is what we ask of our armed forces. So Congress, Ms. Pelosi, if you think there might be a danger to our fundamental freedoms, what are you will to sacrifice to save them? If you believe there might be a real threat to our liberties, is it worth risking a career? What are you will to give up? Please think hard.
alexnosal writes 'This administration has shown in the past how they deal with dissenters (Valerie Plame, Scott Ritter, etc.)'
You should've used the names Paul Wellstone and Mel Carnahan, both killed in suspicious plane crashes. And "Fortunate Son" author J.H. Hatfield, who committed 'suicide'.
Bush and Cheney are killers, they'll stop at nothing. But they won't have to kill Democrats anymore, since Pelosi and Reid are the perfectly corrupt couple Republicans have always dreamed of.
The United States has become since the Reagan years more and more corrupt and decadent. The rich get away with whatever they want to and live lives of privilege unimaginable to the rest of us. They have declared their independence from the rest of the country and buy that independence by buying politicians who write laws in their favor. In fact some of the rich ARE those politicians. The middle class is in big trouble--most are in debt up to their necks, demoralized, overworked, and confused. The country is headed for a terrible reckoning....unless, unless...a peoples' movement somehow reignites and spreads--something like the Civil Rights and Peace movements of the sixties and seventies but more militant. There are already maybe 40,000,000 of us who are frustrated and ready to join a movement for drastic change here. We need to start talking to others to get them on board. First action to take is calling Congressman Conyers, your own congressperson, and Speaker Pelosi to demand that impeachment begin for Vice Presdent Cheney. Pelosi's office number is: 202-225-4965
Bakunin, do you think they have enough concentration camps prepared to contain forty million of us?
Oh,__ never mind, they will have means of disposal prepared. Glad I don't have any gold teeth or a tattoo. Hey think of it, the moral majority gang will have some fancy lamp shades to display while they sing,__ Onward Christian Soldiers.
Speaking up against the war is vital for our nation! For all of those who want peace now. People can now use their cell phone to voice their opposition to the war in Iraq. Texting the word PEACE, from any mobile phone, to the number 73223, the numeric spelling for peace, instantly links users to a network of Americans who believe that withdrawing from Iraq is the best way to bring peace to the region. It's about saying 'no' to the war. Michael Klein, a gulf war veteran, says Te goal is to create a peace chain where everyone who believes in peace texts five people and asks them to text 5 more people who stand for peace. Text peace is set to sweep the country and will be too powerful even Bush to ignore. "
I am truly ashamed to be a member of the human race. How can I explain Bush's slaughter to rats, skunks, and pigs?
"Those who seek or want to hold onto their existing power are not about to condemn the man (or his actions) who has done so much to extend its reach." -?
Excessive government secrecy on an unprecedented scale as we are experiencing today does nothing for the people; what it does do is increase and preserve "unconstitutional" governmental power while it covers up fraud and gross mismanagment of U.S. Foreign Policy along with our tax dollars.
"I believe there are more instances of the abridgment of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachemnts of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations." -James Madison
Ludwig von Mises: "Every dictator plans to rear, raise, feed, and train his fellow men as the breeder does his cattle. His aim is not to make the people happy but to bring them into a condition which renders him, the dictator, happy. He wants to domesticate them, to give them cattle status. The cattle breeder also is a benevolent despot."
If Democrats don't take action to impeach the criminals in this White House after taking the time to impeach Bill Clinton for lying about his sexual encounters, the people of this nation will have no alternative but to believe that Democrats continue to be ruled by the elitist "secrecy team" whose goal is to undermine the freedom and liberty of "The People" in favor of corporate global interest groups.
The politics and political games by Republicans and Democrats is beyond disgusting!
Listen to Stiv. Jam Conyer's phone lines and email and send letters too. Same for Pelosi.
Jmjsgoblue,
With apologies, I think you forgot the commission of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
By the way, someone suggested calling the Congress constantly and time after time, and let the phones ring off the hooks, and also sending e-mails after e-mails with plenty of articles on impeachment, keeping the e-mails busy all day.
Gang, I think we're preaching to the choir, Rebel Farmer & Stiv have the right idea. This is our watering hole where we toss around options, not just pontificate. Start calling, start emailing and start calling your friends to call. Spread the word, make some noise.
As flaccid, feckless, and futile Feingold's censure motion is, our "fearless" leader Harry "Faith Based Initiative" Reid won't even consider that.
So, dear citizen, append a few more choice "f" words into the above paragraph as imagination dictates.
Reid and Pelosi hear us loudly and clearly. There's no way they can't. 54% want Cheney impeached -- that made big headlines. They know exactly what's expected of them.
But according to their calculus, they net more votes if they do not impeach, censure, or in any way hold the President accountable than if they do. They believe they can attract more independents and right wing kooks to vote for Hillary F*cking Clinton (!) than lose base constituents who abandon the party for their unwillingness to meet their sworn duty.
It's time we start poking a sharp stick into their eye for a change instead of the other way around. We're tired of asking. We demand that you meet your oath-sworn obligation to defend our Constitution, not only from these pigs now in office, but from abuse in future generations of would-be pigs empowered by the egregious precedents established by these criminals. This is not optional.
Just what is it about "...so help me God" that you find so repulsive, Nancy? Harry? Are these words as meaningless to you as they are to me, and you're just faking you piety for the cameras? Are you that two-faced, that craven?
Okay, I called my congressman and urged him to support HR 333 and any resolution to impeach Bush. Now that that's done, I'm not holding my breath. Yes, it was a necessary step and anyone who hasn't yet gotten off their ass should do so to be counted as a citizen instead of a mere corporate consumer.
The next step is this: If Congress doesn't impeach and Bush and Cheney serve out their term (if the election hasn't been canceled through martial law before November 2008), we need to impeach ALL of our representatives in Congress who are up for re-election. That's right, ALL OF THEM! If they do not uphold their sworn constitutional duties to protect this country from ALL enemies, foreign AND domestic, then we are the last line - we MUST impeach Congress.
Of course, this means Democrats will have to gore their most sacred cows - other Democrats. Many Republicans are finding the necessary backbone to speak out against Bush and Cheney for the crimes they are committing. It's now the Democrats' turn to speak out against their own for the crimes of omission and co-mission that they are perpetrating. Let's see if the Democratic apologists and me-tooists can muster the guts and integrity to defend what they say they stand for - justice.
Decent,honourable American People.
The evidence before you is irrefutable.
Rise up
or Shut up
The World prefers the former to the latter - the choice is yours.
Go cindy: Will donate $ if you decide to run. Pelosi needs to be replaced and Cindy is the Woman to do it.
Notice the way the public gets upset over the stories of Michael Vick killing and torturing
dogs, but bush-cheney killing and torturing people in Irag doesn't seem to bother some people.
Just how much more are bush- cheney going to be allowed to screw up this country? Does
someone have to come up with some film of bush at the Vick dog fighting parties making bets to
get some people upset?
I just called Conyer's office and got through on the first try.
That disappointed me. I had hoped it would take several attempts to reach him.
But maybe enough people will call to make a difference.
all the best
We need to ask ourselves the bigger question -- haven't we already lost something if we need to beg (i.e. protest) our elected officials to do the right thing? Can we even get real change that way?
There's only one of two answers:
(1) A sufficient number of Americans agree with the current leadership, state of affairs, etc. Or they don't care. In this case, we have no right asking for impeachment -- the majority of Americans are well-suited to this style of national leadership, it represents them well.
OR
(2) Perhaps they do care, don't know what to do, aren't organized, etc.
In this case, our job is to lobby & organize our fellow American -- and ignore our corrupt leadership to the best of our ability. The law of raw numbers will eventually kick in. Any remaining leadership will eventually (to put it crudely) have to shit or get off the toilet.
But why waste time banging our heads against do-nothing leaders?
and so you can see that America Stands with Cindy! We are stand beside you in lobbying our "representatives" to do what is right and impeach these bastards
I only wish our elected officials had one-tenth the courage you do Cindy! We need impeachment, both to get rid of Bush & Cheney and to send the Democrats a warning--just in case they were thinking of using some of those "imperial presidential powers" when they get elected.
Paul Bramscher,
I would opt for the second option. I have been saying all along that we have the numbers. If we can expand our base by going to the mass media messageboards and keep posting our messages, there are many people who actually agree with us and WANT TO DO SOMETHING! Once we have the expanded base, then we can discuss organization. Along the way you will find a few Bushies who will call you some choice words, but throw a few irrefutable points at them and they fold like cheap suits. What I am saying is FORGET THE POLITICIANS. They are totally unreliable, so we need to handle this ourselves. And the best way to do it is as you point out, in large numbers. That is the first place to start, then you can move forward from there.
Re Claudius,
I agree, we have to get the word out that impeachment IS patriotic. We need people with gumption,(see freewayblogger.org) with simple but effective ideas to reach the mass of working stiffs, just like you and me. I'm fed up ! Defend our Constitution, Impeach Them, NOW.
The Dems weigh political chances rather than simply doing what is right. Maybe they should weigh this: one million signatures is nothing to sneeze at, and the lawbreakers at the top of this administration have the lowest polls ever taken.
Mr. Conyers, and all you other Dems we sent to Congress to stop this war and hold its perpetrators responsible, it's time to step up and show your mettle. Whether the bill of impeachment will pass or not, the voters demand that you put your name in the history books as being either for or against articles which have already been written.
If the evidence produced during the debate doesn't convince America's representatives of probable cause and lead to impeachment procedings, it will certainly fulfill an expressed need of the American people.
So do the right and constitutional thing, and quit weighing possible political futures. It would at least give us some way of telling you from the Republicans.
When enough Americans get the gumption to get out in the streets and SHUT DOWN BUSINESS for a few days like has happened in France and China, then perhaps we will get some change. It might be positive like in France or more negitive as in China, but change we will get. I am really tired of this 'Death by a Thousand Cuts' that has been inflicted on the citizens of this country. As We the People get ever weaker when will the time be right to stand up for ourselves. The founding fathers stood up to the British, the Unions stood up to the Pinkertons, what are we going to stand up for?
Too right. Time's up. Time's passed. Impeach them both (all?) Today. It's not too soon. I hope it's not too late.
Impeachment now, then beginning the trial.
However, the trial will take time that is true.
It will be interesting for the American public to see the evidence presented in the prosecution and again in the defense during the trial.
Perhaps we will get to see the US government more clearly.
We have all the time in the world to advance the principles of democracy and work on practicing them.
One thing that ought to keep the Democrats from pursuing impeachment is that we may find that they were very willing collaborators in the crimes of the administration. It thus will make it just as hard to vote for a Democrat as a Republican
So let's have an impeachment and a trial and then let's clean house and find human beings to represent Americans in the Congress and Executive Branch
MADISON21: Well thought out case laid out. It's very optimistic and I thank you for sharing it!
Well they've arrested Cindy and about 29 more who were urging Conyers et al to begin impeachment proceedings. Now as Evelyn questioned earlier, will they seize her home and all of her assets as the recent Executive order signed into law by our petty little tyrant allows? Your majesty's embarrassingly teeny tiny 25 percent approval rating is now officially cast in stone as the highest it will be should you maintain your rule for 18 more months. Why don't you just go ahead and throw every grieving mother who happens to have lost her child and now rerets having sent her son into your holy deathtrap into the slammer?
Roger Carter,
You gave me an idea. Does anyone know any hip-hop artists who might be interested in pushing for impeachment? What if we were able to enlist the help of artists like 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, and others to create songs calling for the impeachment of Bush and Cheney. If these models on television can draw a large crowd for Giuliani and Obama, think about the numbers of young people rap artists could draw to support the impeachment cause. It would educate our youth about the corruption and criminal behavior of Bush and Cheney and how their asses need to be booted out of office, yesterday!
ECONOMICS TRUCK: Your list is a VERY short list. The best examination of this topic I've seen was done by Nick Turse and entitled, "LEGION OF THE FALLEN." One glaring example was the translator Sybil Edmonds, but there are SO many others whose careers have been compromised for doing the right, moral and courageous thing trying to stand in the way of the Bush bang-bang blitzkreig machine.
ROGER CARTER, I especially like this lyric, "They're watching every move you make
Democracy's Sentry
Welcome America
To No Knock Entry."
It reminds me of a very cool song by Jill Scott, "Watching Me." But your first one, "Time for Heroes" has an awful lot of sexism in it... look at the brave WOMEN like Barbara Lee and Granny D and Cindy Sheehan trying to make a difference where lots of men hang back to play follow the leader.
contrahiker,
Thanks for the website reference. I am hoping that someone has a connection or knows somebody in the hip-hop industry. Maybe we can also try to get the word out in other areas of the music industry. The Bush Administration has done nada for ethnicity in this country, and we ought to play that up in trying to spread our message. The music industry might be able to help us there. There are a few actors in Hollywood who have gotten involved in the movement. But we need more, and that is why I was urging Michael Moore to help us out with the larger connections. Anyone else you or others know of who might be able to help us is strongly encouraged to do so.
ROGER: In my youth I used to go to sleep at night to WBAI in New York with the coolest DJ named ROSCOE who read amazing poetry like "The Tree" by Yevgeny Yepteshenko (spelling?); or "For What Is Man?" by Tom Wolfe (not the novelist). In those days radio was so OPEN to voices of protest, voices of vision. Today it's all Clear channel and the bought and paid for Republican clone machine. THIS is why your songs don't get out. A few months ago I think it was Neil Young writing to ask where all the younger people's protest songs were... and a poster pointed out that Neil can say that now, having the $ and cloud to get his voice into the arena; but for the most part, ANY message not pro war or pro corporate capitalism without conscience has to pass through the gates of hell and then some. I did radio and TV ten years ago and haven't had a gig since! It's harder for progressives to be interviewed on mainstream TV/radio than for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle!
