DeFazio Asks, But He's Denied Access
Classified info - The congressman wanted to see government plans for after a terror attack
WASHINGTON -- Oregonians called Peter DeFazio's office, worried there was a conspiracy buried in the classified portion of a White House plan for operating the government after a terrorist attack.
As a member of the U.S. House on the Homeland Security Committee, DeFazio, D-Ore., is permitted to enter a secure "bubbleroom" in the Capitol and examine classified material. So he asked the White House to see the secret documents.
On Wednesday, DeFazio got his answer: DENIED.
"I just can't believe they're going to deny a member of Congress the right of reviewing how they plan to conduct the government of the United States after a significant terrorist attack," DeFazio says.
Homeland Security Committee staffers told his office that the White House initially approved his request, but it was later quashed. DeFazio doesn't know who did it or why.
"We're talking about the continuity of the government of the United States of America," DeFazio says. "I would think that would be relevant to any member of Congress, let alone a member of the Homeland Security Committee."
Bush administration spokesman Trey Bohn declined to say why DeFazio was denied access: "We do not comment through the press on the process that this access entails. It is important to keep in mind that much of the information related to the continuity of government is highly sensitive."
Norm Ornstein, a legal scholar who studies government continuity at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, said he "cannot think of one good reason" to deny access to a member of Congress who serves on the Homeland Security Committee.
"I find it inexplicable and probably reflective of the usual, knee-jerk overextension of executive power that we see from this White House," Ornstein said.
This is the first time DeFazio has been denied access to documents. DeFazio has asked Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., to help him access the documents.
"Maybe the people who think there's a conspiracy out there are right," DeFazio said.

Show All"Quaggenbush" implies the fragmented
nature of the man's mind; "Quagbush"
has too much style, a dashing pirate's
name; "Quattlebush" is just too silly
considering the lives being lost.
As Bush's regime supposedly draws to a close, I am certain there will be more secretive actions, oppression, and blackballing of American rights. These criminals have the white house sequestered and shut off from any Congressman. I don't think we will see another election for a long time, if ever, as long as people like the Bush's clan have an iron hand in all of our activities. It just gets more dangerous each day for the continuity of our Bill of Rights. So, speak loud and strong, Feingold before you too are shut up or disappear.
There is nt an elected persoange in the Democratic party from the lowest dog catcher to a Congressman who deserves any respect or should be granted access to any records and deserve to be looked upon with contempt by teh more powerfull GOP party. they, the Demos play politics to gain power; for themselves, power the GOP now hold but not for the American populace benefit.
The system is corrupted beyond repair and if people think a vote today is going to change the future direction of US policy by voting for people in present major party grousp including the Greens they are sadly mistaken.
What the hell was the official version of the 9/11 attack?. Read the damn thing. It says Islamic fanatics plotted the attacks down to the last detail. What's that but a conspiracy? Conspiracy theory is the only one that makes even a lick of sense in this matter, and it's just the case of who was involved and or did the administration just deliberately fail to protect the country from what it knew was coming to get a big political boost from the results and then cover it up.
I wish I could take some comfort in Franks suggestion that there is no plan, but a natural disaster in a mostly black city is one thing, while a war for oil is something taken very seriously by this administration (Especially Cheney). Anyone who doesn't believe that Cheney is preparing for martial law as part of an all or nothing war with Iran should read this.
Frankly, I'm a bit disappointed that so many "progressives" are still buying the tepid mainstream Democrat line that the Bush administration is merely "inept", and therefor we can all just sit back and comfortably watch them self destruct, without us having to worry about it. They are not inept. What they are is extremely narrow minded and fanatically determined. To them a natural disaster in a mostly black city is little more than a political distraction, so they are completely unprepared for that type of a situation, while a perpetual war for global domination via shrinking oil supplies is nothing less then an obsession, especially for Cheney. And I guarantee you that Cheney, while he may be dangerously detached from reality (like any fascist), is not inept when it comes to his obsession with global power.
As far as there not being enough troops left in the country to even enforce martial law, it doesn't take many troops to subdue a population which has been reduced to obese consumer cattle. And, since the Clinton administration, police have been increasingly militarized to the point of being a paramilitary force themselves. The police in every city are now equipped with body armor, armored vehicles, and an array of both "non-lethal" and lethal weapons. Certainly much more then is necessary to handle the pathetic turn out we could expect to see at any attempted protest.
It is true that this administration is injured and cornered, but that is exactly what makes them so dangerous. They are desperate to win by any means possible, and they have nothing left to lose.
Maybe the conspiracy theorists are right? Are you inebriated? Of course, they are right. Maybe NOT when this bunch of thugs took power, literally, but NOW it is. Theirs is a quest for oil and power, nothing else. Their pockets obviously have no bottoms and they don't have any ethics, either. I don't see anything good out of these guys, nothing!!! When one has no redemptive characteristics, they generally are breaking laws and doing bad things, correct? I rest my case. These guys make Saddam, Hitler, and anyone else bad you can think of, look like they are from the same mold. Even Attila the Hun was no worse. They are not leaders, they are thieves and liars.
"The liberties of a people never were, nor ever will be, secure, when the transactions of their rulers may be concealed from them." - Patrick Henry
We learned long ago that Cheyney, when he was Gerald Ford's chief of staff, decided that Watergate had weakened the presidency and that the tide had to be reversed to correct the presumed excesses of the Legislative Branch. As Bush's VP, he has now done that for seven years. This is one illustration of Cheyney's belief. It can be corrected only when Cheyney is impeached for the abuse of power. Whether or not that happens, Bush rides off into the sunset innocent of any understanding of how he has abdicated his responsibility for maintaining respect for our Constitution. This is why we have three branches of government.
There are a few things we can hope for which are inevitable:
1) America has had a long tradition of graft, corruption, injustice, slavery, etc. in its short history and although the present administration is perhaps the worst (open) offender in a century, like everyone else they're mortal. There must be a power transfer at some point, and Bush has no sons. No King George III. So it'll either go to another branch of the Bush Dynasty, or else someone else among the ruling mob, Bilderberg CEO's, or however our leadership is selected and the masses brainwashed by right-wing media. But a change must occur, even if it is merely lateral.
2) They've got an unsustainable corruption. It can only go on at this rate, or increase so much, before something snaps. I don't think their level of abuse can operate for the long run, it'll become a victim of its own excesses. I don't think they have enough supporters -- relative to the unrest brewing.
3) Like all forms of fascism it requires a disinterested, fooled or otherwise powerless populous. Diehard progressive-populists make up perhaps only 1-5% of the population, and growing. The Democrats probably hope to divert most of them into pro-capitalist/neocon/hawkish/globalization/corruption-bailout directions, but I doubt that this game can go on much longer. People can only be fooled into harmlessness so long.
As soon as they make it personal -- whether a new draft, concentration camps, etc. they'll see a rise in populism like they've never seen before. I don't care how fancy the next iPod is -- when the next generation is told by the drill sergeant to pull it out of their ear during boot camp, they'll wake up and smell the oil.
So it could well be that Bush/Cheney pushing it just a little further might be a good thing for this country, an opportunity to start out anew.
We need to end this reign of wartime president --
Get out of Iraq --
And we need a full, unbiased investigation of 9/11 which does seek to place responsibility .... and I would guess that the culprits are in the White House.
In my humble opinion the 2008 election will go on as scheduled, You living in the States will be subjected to the endless sound-bites of meaningless rhetoric and the best democracy money can buy will continue.
BUT, if there is martial law there is one thing I have not seen mentioned, the Government now can shut down your bank account, move your out of your home and imprison you if Bush wants to label you a terrorist or enemy combatant. The definitions are so broad for either of these labels that bitching on this thread would probably qualify any of us much less picking up you trusty 22 that you havnt fired a shot from in ten years and brandishing it in front of police or military. Think of it, you would be faced with trying to feed yourself with the change in your pocket.
i say reinstate the draft.
when your only choices are dying for a cause you don't believe in or standing up for a principle you do, bushco won't have any more option but to finally listen to the people.
"Norm Ornstein, a legal scholar who studies government continuity at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, said he "cannot think of one good reason" to deny access to a member of Congress who serves on the Homeland Security Committee."
First of all, the American Enterprise Institute should be labeled as "neo-conservative" rather than "conservative".
Secondly, isn't it ironic that after Norm and his gang helped to achieve what they hoped would be a perpetual Republican majority in congress, that he would write a book entitled, "The Broken Branch: How Congress Is Failing America and How to Get It Back on Track"
It's refreshing to see others post what I have thought since Bush was installed in 2001, that there will be no 2008 election. The new protocol for disaster sure looks like preparation for another "attack." Is this inevitable? It certainly looks like it's in the pipeline. Perhaps DeFazio will be inspired to expose the plan?
relax y'all... this plan has been in place for the continuity of "government" under martial law for at least 50 years now. It may have had some minor modifications over the years but has always had several scenarios, such as alien invasion, nuclear attack, hurricanes, earthquakes and other dire situations, which could be used to implement it. It is called, as posted above, National Security Presidential(?) Directive(?) 51.
But hey, this is all good news really. No previous administration has ever thought of actually implementing this for obvious reasons. now may be the time for 2 reasons, the first being that should it be implemented the public would hopefully FINALLY rise up in fury forgetting all the bullshit divisive red herring issues like immigration where we have only one of 2 sides to take, neither intending to fix anything, and finally waking up from the 2 party coma we have been divided with.
Or... they will have gambled right that the American Sheeple will roll over and play dead yet again. Now that our 'protests' look like a Sunday afternoon Veterans Day Parade, following pre-determined routes determined by the very system supposedly being protested. Protests used to stop traffic and shut down cities. Not anymore. most Sheeple are happy to delude themselves into thinking that they will be OK as long as they keep going to work...
I'm hoping that these idiots will try to do something like this and suspend elections, MAYBE that will wake up the sleeping giant of America... it's people. Just remember, not one of our rights, inculding the 2nd Amendment were ever simply granted to us by our government. Every right we enjoy today had to be fought for after the American Revolution. Don't think these guys are going to give you anything either.
there is a plan.
and cancelling the 2008 elections is possibly part of it.

Yeah, this about how I see it.
If you can, call in sick tomorrow, or take a week's vacation. Preferably outside of a major urban center.
You never know where they might stage their pretext event but Monday morning rush hour would probably cause the most chaos.
Unite with friends, reconcile with your enemies & protect your families.
Good luck. The whole world will need it now.
Kathy: I've been on him about HR 676 too. I've also alerted him to the stripping of COOL (Country of Orgin Labeling) from the 2007 Farm Bill that was passed in the 2002 bill but has never been enacted.
Quite frankly, I think all the congress critters have got their hands full right now. I am always surprised when their offices don't seem to know what is going on. Weird. Maybe they don't have enough help?
Off to bed......
Funny we are all on the same page but we are a minority. The dress code for us all to wear will show up soon, like voter registration, "Are you left, right or a terrorist to big business? HAHAHAHAHA! Load them on the bus!" P.S. you all Rock!
Well it seems to butter the bread of all those darn conspiracy theorists for sure. Now to get a good answer why we are under the throes of martial law and terrorized for asking the truth. The wto riots in seattle are a small example of martial law and subversion of our Bill of Rights. We have no right to bear arms to overthrow a rogue regime in the US anymore after OK. and the O.J. riots. From the first bush years this has been put together and planed just like Sr. crying over how good Jeb is. We are all watched for talking now?

Well, its a shame most 'mericans can't recognize themselves in a mirror!
Hey Rebel Farmer, we're on the same page here. Great! I've also been on his case about HR 676 and his office has agreed to have him check out the health insurance industry study commissioned by the California Nurses Association and the National Nurses Organizing Committee. Probably just to get me off their backs. They told me he's working on his own health care plan (as is Wyden). Jeez-is everyone in Congress creating their own pet health care plan? Complete with mandated insurance? The insurance industry must think it died and went to heaven.
Kathyodat: I was posting at the same time you were! Let me know how your call goes!
Peter DeFazio is my congressman. That was an interesting comment he made "Maybe the people who think there's a conspiracy out there are right."
I will call his office and ask what he intends to do about it.
Impeach Dick "Tater" Cheney! _ Thanks Huckleberry, I needed that.
About taking up arms in the case of martial law - Have you ever seen the SIZE of their guns? I'm not convinced that Joe Sixpack or any of the rest of us are fully prepared for what is coming.
And about DeFazio - He's my congress critter and he is a terrific one most of the time. He ain't bought and sold. I think this denial of info will pretty much put him over the top. I've been trying for months to get him to sign onto HR333 to impeach Dick "tater". It's going to be fun to call his office on Monday. I can't wait!

That's why I'm in Canada. Although I give Canada 20 years, tops, before becoming One With The Borg.
To paraphrase the words of the historic Populist figure Mary Lease, given this situation "it [would be] time to raise less corn and more hell." I think as Paul Bramshcher, Frank1569, and others indicated, that slogan would unite several groups to combat martial law.
Concentration camps or martial law?
If Bush fires up martial law and the camps, Joe Sixpacks will take up arms all right. A majority of the military, police, law enforcement at various levels, etc. will be in agreement with him also. For the first time, leftists, rightists, military, etc. all on the same side.
Remember, contingency governments, etc. have been around awhile. I seem to remember FEMA/Ollie North having the same pipe dream a couple decades ago. It makes them feel good on paper, but in reality I doubt they'd muster more than 10% of the country to their dictatorship if push came to shove.
He was denied, so what is he going to do about it? Should he just give in and say, "Oh, well, I gave it my best shot"? That doesn't seem very effective, and ensures that we get even more of the same in future.
Lalo Jenkins, I listened to the program at the link you posted. Damn interesting stuff but the question it begs is: if this guy was so wrong back in the Reagan Administration why would he have any credence now? There is always the argument that he was a insider and knows what games they play but still, this is frightening stuff.
I recommend the link at Lalo Jenkins post above.
Maybe Sandy Berger stuffed it down his pants.
frank1569 is correct-there probably is no plan. What a laugh it will be if Congress somehow does get access to the so called secret
White House document.
"Norm Ornstein, a legal scholar who studies government continuity at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, said he "cannot think of one good reason" to deny access to a member of Congress who serves on the Homeland Security Committee."
George Bush's reasons to deny congress are never what most of us would consider "good" reasons; they are, as any good student of government continuity would agree, an outright "abuse of executive power" which continues to go "unchallenged" by the spineless Republicans and Democrats in Congress.
If Congress insists on allowing a dictator to govern this country, then why the f**k do "we the people" continue to keep these useless bastards on our payroll? They are supposed to be working for us - not for a dictator and not for the corporate elite. It is our tax dollars that keep them employed!
A warning from an ex-Reagan administration higher up.

Impeach Dick "Tater" Cheney!
If the Cheneybush terror attack response plan is anything like the post Katrina response plan, then it's safe to assume the reason they will not allow anyone to see it is because it does not exist. Martial law would be fun, since we don't have enough troops to secure the local Starbucks, no less an entire country of armed, angry citizens. Cancel the election? Like Rudy tried post 9/11? NYers didn't let him do it, and We the People wouldn't let the Loonitary Execucrazies do it either.
This week we learned there's no post-escalation Plan B. Since they have proven they could care less about "us," the idea that they have a prepped terror attack response plan is ludicrous.
no, no- it'll be the Cheney cabal. Bush will be the martyr for the cause.
Another figurehead will be 'elected' so Cheney can stay behind the curtain.
Jeb is available. How many 'mericans would even notice it was a different Bush?
It's ironic-we have a Bush and a big fat Dick in the White House and we're the ones getting screwed.
Haliburton has built the detention camps. And Bush's Praetorian mercenaries are on tap to guard them.
Anyone ever considered American refugees?
(Anyone else holding their breath this morning?)
they are not going to let anyone know about the plan to declare martial law, cancel the 2008 election, and create the Bush Dictatorship
