A Dissenters 4th of July Experience:
America: Stripped of Her Rights Happy Independence Day?
The day before Independence Day, while thinking about independence and how many of our rights have been stripped of us under the neo-con fascist regime, otherwise known as the Bush administration. Out of this pondering came my idea for an outfit to wear in my local parade: wearing a red bra and panty set (with equivalent coverage to that of a modest bikini bathing suit,) a white garter belt holding up sheer red nylon stockings, white shoes, a grapevine wreath adorning my head, complete with ivy and a peace dove . . . while holding a sign which read: America: Stripped of Her Rights - Happy Independence Day?
Yes, admittedly, the thought of wearing this amount of clothing in public did cause this middle-aged woman with a lifelong desire for a flat stomach a due amount of trepidation; however, she decided to throw vanity to the side for the sake of her ever-diminishing democracy. Besides, it had been awhile since I had gotten out of my comfort zone. (In fact, the last time I did something like this was when I posed naked (spelling out the word PEACE,) with over a hundred woman on a mountaintop in Occidental, CA, in protest of the Iraq war at its start.) I was overdue for a venture of this nature. So, I took a deep breath, summoned up my courage and walked down the street in broad daylight. What is left of my democracy was calling!
Almost immediately, (within 20 feet,) upon walking to the parade lineup street, I was confronted by a member of Mayor Stanley Cohens Parade Puritan Patrol (my words, but otherwise known as a parade marshal.) She informed me that I was indecent and not in line with the "G-rated" parade, and could not be in it. She showed me her official document to prove it. She then said that I would need to speak with Stanley Cohen and began to escort me in that direction. I let her know that I had no intention of talking with him as I was clothed in the same amount of clothes a modest bikini bathing suit offered, and was acting under my Constitutional right to free speech. I also let her know that she could let Stanley know that if they kicked me out of the parade, he would have an ACLU lawsuit on his hands. I also let her know that Stanley knows who I am, and would also know that I would not be joking about doing this.
While one of Stanleys minions went off to see if I could exercise my free speech rights in an Independence Day parade, I was confronted by another Puritan Patrol member another parade marshal, who told me virtually the same thing as the first. I informed her that the other marshal was already speaking to Stanley, and that I intended to stay in the parade.
I then arrived at my destination: the Sonoma Peace & Justice float the float I had been invited to join, by a member of the group, who had also extended this invitation to anyone in the community who wished to join along.
The person in charge of the float, Dave Henderson, promptly told me that I could not walk with their float citing that he agreed with Stanley, and that I wasn't a member of the group! This came as interesting news to me as I had been invited to walk with them, and have been disseminating their news via my online peace and justice newsletter for years. What was most ironic was that the last tenet on their float read something like "Respect for political dissent & tolerance for unpopular ideas." Evidently, Mr. Henderson holds this as a nice idea, but just not in practice! It is for this kind of hypocrisy and censorship that I was compelled to walk in the parade wearing my skimpy ensemble!
Regardless of Mr. Hendersons un-Democratic pronouncement, I decided to stay and walk with the group. Thankfully, others in the group were happy to have me walk with them.
Later, Mr. Henderson, perhaps in protection of his ego or his desire to win in his parade category (as he had in a prior year,) wrote a Letter to the Editor of the local paper, doing his best to distance himself from both me and my message of dissent, which he evidently deemed unpopular. In his letter, he felt the need to make it absolutely clear that I was not a member of his group, and that my sign have anything to do with the message that was the theme of his parade entry. In fact, Mr. Henderson is sorely mistaken. I was walking in support of the statement on his float which read: "Respect for political dissent & tolerance for unpopular ideas." Additionally, I was walking for my democracy and free speech rights, which is a national issue with a local impact and my statement was indirectly speaking to one of the tenets on his float: A City Council sensitive to local impact of national issues. If one demands a City Council be sensitive to the local impact of national issues, one must first begin with being sensitive to this oneself!
Then, a person identifying himself as the head of local Taekwondo school came up and dealt me his verbal karate kicks, telling me he that agreed with Stanley (and his Puritan Patrol my words,) and that he had 16 impressionable boys walking with him. Evidently this man has not been watching TV, movies, or videos in the last decade where these boys have undoubtedly seen even more scantily-clad women! And, I am sure that these same boys go to beaches where the bathing suits worn by some women leave little or nothing to the imagination.
At this point, the first overzealous Puritan Patrol parade marshal came back and told me that Stanley had decided that I could be in the parade. How magnanimous of him to grant me my Constitutional right to free speech!
Almost upon receiving this news, a righteous evangelical-type citizen came up and told me that I should be ashamed of myself and was indecent. Since she was not part of the Mayors official Puritan Patrol, I wondered who gave her the authority to judge my bikini-like outfit as indecent. Certainly not my God who gave me my body, or the parts I was covering!
Why is it that so many Americans are so uncomfortable with the human body, and go absolutely puritanical when some skin is bared? . . . Especially just skin not even private parts! Are these people so sexually-repressed or sexually-frustrated that it overly excites them to see a bit of skin? What kind of shame are we teaching our children about our bodies through this behavior? I dont have the answers to these questions, but know that these people are not appointed as the Decency Police in a democracy.
Speaking of police, two officers on motorcycles came close enough to assess my clothing situation. Evidently, failing to find evidence of indecency, (most likely dashing the penalty-seeking hopes of whoever called them,) they left the scene.
Despite the bumpy beginning to my Independence Day experience, all in all the feedback from the parade crowd was positive, though there were about five or so folks shouting things like "indecent!" or "put some clothes on!"
I mentally reminded myself that my democracy was calling me, and thought of all of the rights which the Bush administration has stripped away. Head held high, and eyes straight forward, I carried on.
When we got to what might be called "right-wing row" or "boo alley," (the part of the plaza known for housing a strong conservative contingent,) I had two water balloons launched at me which made their target. Fortunately, I was not injured, but was left wondering, what's next in our Empire of Intolerance? . . . Stoning adulterers? Burning those not of one's religion at the stake? Killing someone who is gay?! This kind of righteous intolerance leads to wars.
My call to walk for our democracy and our disheveled rights was made even more clear when Mario Alioto III wrote the local paper in his Letter to the Editor: I found myself in disbelief when someone was holding up a sign in the parade stating that Americans are being stripped of their rights. I love the fact that I have the right to watch a good-looking, half-naked, middle-aged, garter-belt-wearing woman walk down the middle of the street looking like a prostitute, in a parade with hundreds of children present. Where else but in America! Excuse me while I opt out of flag waving Mr. Alioto III, but which rock have you been living under over the last few years to not even be informed of the many rights of which we have been stripped under your oh-so-patriotic administration? Yikes! I find it very scary that such an uninformed citizenry exists in our country. Thanks to FOX News, and the rest of our corporate-owned media, no doubt. An informed citizenry always trumps blind patriotism Mr. Alioto III!
Why do these neo-con puritans feel the need to impose their judgments on others, and then resort to acts of violence? This is the kind of intolerant thinking that leads to wars. I find it sad. So, sad that some days when thinking about the seemingly never-ending war in Iraq, the genocide in Darfur, and all of the ways the United States has imposed itself upon other countries, I am brought to tears. This is one of the reasons I am walked half-naked for my eroding democracy.
Our disappearing democracy has been one of the only things important enough for me to pose naked for peace on a hilltop at the start of the war, and to wear underwear in public five years after it has begun!
With people supposedly involved in peace and justice not following their own publicly-declared tenets of Respecting political dissent and tolerating unpopular ideas, my lingerie-laden Independence Day free speech statement was and is needed!
This disrobed dissenter will continue to march on in order to take back her hijacked democracy!

Show AllWow!!!! Awesome!!!!
Its amazing how little you have to divert from the popular path in order to find out how little freedom there is in America. On the very day that we as a nation should be celebrating the rights given to us by our Creator, among them Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, its amazing how many Americans are willing and wanting to step forward to prevent someone from exercising those rights under various pretenses.
I like this idea. Maybe a million or more of us should get together and do the same thing next year in Denver for the DNC! www.recreate68.org
Excellent activist work, Leslie!
Bush & Cheney are systematically chucking our Constitutional right of free speech.
Keep up your brave dissent! You are what DEMOCRACY looks like! Congratulations!

Way to go Leslie. You are a modern Lady Godiva!
And yeah, I'm not surprised at the crowd reaction. Its a sad commentary on American backwardness.
It's sad how closed-minded Americans are, even to their own repression. Actually, Americans are more self-repressive than any other people I think. I suppose it has something to do with our puritanical roots. But for all their talk of freedom, Americans are among the least tolerant of deviation from established norms. Other cultures, especially those in "third world" countries permit more freedom for individuals than America, except for perhaps a few big issues such as homosexuality.
Dave
I love it when truth is spoken in a way the dimwits cannot ignore. Brave Lady, and to me a person who stands for what it could mean to be an American.
Well done, Leslie. You go, girl!
By your actions Leslie you have shown far more courage (and skin!) than our supposed "representatives" in defending our Constitution. Thanks for sharing.
I live in NE Florida and if I had done something as brave as you did, I WOULD have been stoned and not just water-ballooned. You are a very courageous woman and I thank you for making a stand. I attended a party on that day and we were requested to wear red, white and blue. I wore red and white and told them the 'blue' was in my soul and spirit on this day and every day until we regain our independence.
Thank you, Leslie. Such courage. Rather than participate in any "patriotic" antics on the 4th of July, I did the sensible thing. Went to Canada on the 4th so didn't have to listen to any lies. Wish I could have stayed there...
Awesome!!! We need more patriots like you Leslie!!!
I have always said that if corporate board meetings were held in the nude, 3 things would occur...
1 - we would have more women in executive management!!!! This would be a good thing...
2 - there would be more honesty and truth in advertising during the meetings...
3 - the good 'ole boy network would lose it's my dick is bigger than yours mentality...
Let Freedom RING!!!
the idiots who threw water balloons at you are proving the point... what kind of freedom do we have left when you can be punished for simply thinking differently than the group...
Leslie was attacked because she represents so many things that have come to be despised in this sorry nation--including independence, courage, truthfulness and creativity.
leslie, i find it deeply arousing when middle aged women shed their cultural garb and don a bikini and the red white and blue to show how much they love the concept of democracy. This is dissent at its finest and i want you to know how much i admire and support what you're doing. God bless the women who are standing up at this critical time.
Actions DO speak louder than words and may your act of bravery, Leslie, encourage us all to stand up (and march if need be) for what we believe in.
Fellow Sonoman
It is sad but, the United States Government embodies, indeed enforces, hypocrisy and is nothing but all talk and no walk! Which I have a hard time understanding why there are a few Americans who are fine with this scenario. Yeah being against dissent and voicing opinions contrary to yours is fine as an American to have; but said person should not be in power over there.
There was something in here that said that America is supposedly great in theory but not in practice? Ummmmm...why not practice what you preach Americans? I ask this in a general sense (forgive me) but the type of people portrayed as "Puritans" in this article seem to be the ones who are a threat to living up to the USA constitutional demands that the Americans decided once upon a time. Therefore a threat to the Constution of their land should not be in power. The reason said individuals should not be in power is because these "Puritans" do not deserve control of Government! "Don't wear lingerie or a bikini in this parade as it may affect some people adversely?" In the United States this request is dare asked?! F-You to the person who would dare say such a thing! These "Puritans" are even worse than the Nazis judging by how they are described in this article!
Do Americans know that in some nations in Europe (I emphasize "some" - not that this fact is relevant to anyone's argument in dismissing Europe as a whole in regards to enforcing REAL freedom among its citizens and human rights; as most nations throughout Europe are more humane in its treatment of its citizens than the United States is to its people) you CAN walk around nude at some public beaches, depending on which country you are in of course, and you CAN smoke marijuana and watch nudity on Primetime TV! Again, all this depends on the country in Europe in question one is in; but yes it is within a train ride or day long drive in a car to where you can see these things, and experience these "freedoms" and very few people if any complains! It is just different here. How does these facts as a whole make Americans feel? Supposedly, the Americans are the champions of freedom in the world. No nation is more "free" than theirs? Los Americanos, ustedes no se tened razon! Again, such hypocrisy.
Leslie, keep up the good fight!
Neoconned: Love the "naked lunch" corporate strategy! I had a hefty dose of PMS before some recent protest and suggested we turn it into a love-in, by having HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of couples disrobe and engage in unmitigated SEX right in the open to let this nation's puritans get a new standard on WHAT obscenity is... is it raw passion or the chemo-nuclear pre-cremation of countless thousands? Christianity and other patriarchal religions have used demonization of sex to repress people to the point they are ticking time bombs... I've said many times the worship of war, the investment in weapons, the whole dog eat dog hierarchical structure so anathema to nature (in most instances, yeah, I realize baboons find it comfortable) is equivalent to an ethos tantamount to "MARS RULES." If Venus, goddess of love had equal dominion, there'd be more sex and a lot less war. And maybe the beast in human nature would become tamed, maybe people would learn that there can be a deep communion of spirits that accompanies the intended merger of bodies... one way or another, mankind is approaching a quantum leap. The Mars route could well be a greater Middle East war, the Venus path... well, naked lunches, lingerie protests, and a return to the WOODSTOCK love-in ideal are probably better strategies.
PS... it's a more refined version of shock and awe!
There was a story I read about an American citizen of middle eastern background that crossed over the Canadian border and back several time a year. He has been detained several times by the boarder police, searched and questioned but never charged.
While detained he was questioned about comments he made on a blog expressing his views. This is a chilling prelude to the Orwellian future you could face with these fascists.
Lockstep thinking is not thinking
@Leslie, Bravo
you have inspired me & maybe many others
with your courage & determination.
My steps have been so tiny compared to yours, please keep in touch with us on CD blog. thanks
Go, girl!!!
Fantastic idea; wish I had both the guts and figure to pull it off. Meanwhile, let's hold the bastards Bush accountable, and roll back our democratic losses. IMPEACH!!!
IMPEACH!!! IMPEACH!!! IMPEACH!!!
Every Man a King
Republicans have long clamored for shrinking government, but their real goal has always been to privatize and corrupt government, including schools, the military, the police, and virtually every agency that promotes and protects the common good. What they really intend to do, is privatize and become government. What republicans actually despise is equality and democracy, not government.
In their heart of hearts, all republicans want to be Rulers. From the richest republican right down to the poorest, they all lust for power over their fellow man. For rich and middleclass republicans it's a matter of class domination, for the poor white trash at the bottom, it's race domination. They yearn for a world where Every Man is King, with the power to dominate and abuse everyone on a lower rung of the ladder.
Republicans will destroy America to achieve their cherished dream. It's their nature.
.
Leslie You Rock!
What a clever costume and message. I think you look damn good from the picture. You are one gutsy lady and foxy too, for the hassle the other people put you thru. Way to go, woman.
What a GREAT statement, what an inspiring woman! A woman of long standing values and real integrity. What a well written article. The behavior of the parade officials was to be expected, Leslie handled it perfectly, and they backed down 'cause they knew she was right. But the actions of one Dave Henderson, of Sonoma Peace and Justice float fame, are despicable. What a hypocritical, self righteous bastard! I wish Leslie would have published his email address so we could all tell old holier than thou Dave what a little weenie he really is. I find Mr. Henderson's hypocrisy much more disturbing than the expected behavior of the wing nuts with the water balloons.
Was this the float from the Peace and Justice Center of Sonoma County? I found their email address I think I will let then know what I think of Mr. Henderson's attempts to stifle Leslie's freedom of speech!
Leslie You Rock!
Buy the film Easy rider and listen to Nicholsons words on Freedom.
Americans do not want freedom they want conformity, and safety, not just in terms of physical harm but in fear of mental harm they try to stop change or anything that may cause controversy.
Americans cannot any longer fathom Freedom because for the last one hundred years they have constantly restricted it by defineing and limiting its boundaries.
What can one say about religous influencce in US?
They have so Bastardized the Christian religion it is no longer recognizable outisde this nations borders as a religon but more on the lines of a Dictatorship of mind and politic; which of course is just what it is.
Teh new Dominionist Theology has only one lie in it and that is denial of the trinity, any other statement even if compleltey untruthfull that will bering about US chrisitanity ruling the world is completly allowable.
An old saying is that, " There is no more righteous person than a reformed whore", and maybe this is what they mean when they are born again.
They support a regime that has turned the Statue of Liberty into a spread eagled naked statue with her hand out for her fees and they now get a tithe from those fees.
While they talk of peace and ove they also talk of helol fire and breimstone, that all people who do not beleive as they do should die and as if just dying was nto bad enough they want everyone to suffer a burning plauge for all eternity in some place they call hell, while they will paly harps and sing songs in rejoicing.
Today one dares not do as this lady for they face the wrath of a public that cannot understand symbolism, because they have become blinded by religion, politics and personal greed, and are mentally lazy when it comes to confrontational argumentation.
They do not reason outisde of what they have been conditioned to think and let others do the real thinking for them.
It is materialism and consumerism gone amuck so that today in the Evangelical Movemtn you will be rewarded with riches here on earth just as long as you are born again and push for Armageddon.
An Armageddon that does not mention the United States by the way, does not let the Jews live even thoughg today they call themselves Christian Zionist, and this anything goes as long as it is done in Jesus name.
A military that uses torture, killing and displacing of millions by any means even a nuke is a weapon of their GOD as long as it falls on someone else but if a plane falls on us it is because of homosexuals and abortionist fault.
This beleif in the infalability of a nations GOD is the corner stone to a Fascist Dictatorship, and just because one does not profess a religous preference in this nation if they choose to follow the rules of that religon then they have become a Fascist sympathizer.
Democratic or Republican party candidates and thier followers today are each trying to outdo the other in professing their religous and moral superiority in supporting that GOD.
While they grow fat on the stolen gains
I don't know if this protest is the best way to get the message out there, but it is a message that needs to be said over and over again, so my kudos to you, Leslie Sheridan. I suspect that you may have had less opposition to your dress if you were carrying a sign advertising "Secrets Adult Superstore". Commerce is far less controversial than liberty.
This Fourth of July, I had a similar incident, although far less controversial or confrontational than yours. My church for a couple of years has been involved in a community worship service on the Fourth. This year, a minister of far more conservative stripe led it, and since I suspected that things would be said that I could not endorse, I decided to downplay my role in it. I arranged for an elderly lady to sing a solo in it, but declined to do a reading selected by that minister, and sat in back of the crowd. At the end of the service, they sang the national anthem, which I regard as a prayer to an idol, so I did not stand or participate. I did not think that anyone had noticed my silent protest, but later two men of my church came to me critical of this act. I explained calmly that I believed God alone deserved this sort of allegiance and it has been my practice for many years not to participate in the saying of the pledge of allegiance or the national anthem. They were not happy with me, but left seeming to understand my philosophical position. I have no idea if this will be the end of it.
I feel honored to be mentioned in this story. I think Ms. Sheridan missed the point, though, of what I was trying to say about "I found myself in disbelief when someone was holding up a sign in the parade stating that Americans are being stripped of their rights.......". I am not an "uninformed American". I am well-educated and I am an up-standing citizen. Last time I checked, I still have rights. I feel great that I have the right to watch you walk down the street in the attire you were wearing on the 4th of July. That would not have been allowed in many countries around the world (see the next paragraph for a current events lesson). I have the right to read anything I want without being penalized or punished for it. I have the right to express my feelings even though some people may get their feelings hurt (I would never throw anything at anyone for their views, nor would I use any act of violence to get my point across...I believe in sticks and stones may break by bones but names will never hurt me). I have the right to sit in my nice backyard in Sonoma, drink a glass of wine and read the newspaper without anyone bothering me. I have the right to go to a major league baseball game, attend the opera, or go to a strip club if I choose to do so. I have the right to travel anywhere in the world that I want to and even gamble in the Las Vegas casinos and bet all my money on black if I so desire.
Ms. Sheridan, go live in the Sudan where people are being killed for what religion they believe in; go to North Korea, where Kim Jong Il turns off the power to all the citizens at night; go to Burma, where Than Shwe uses little children as soldiers to exploit his own political power; go to Turkmenistan where lip-synching and playing music at weddings are banned; last, but not least, go to Saudi Arabia where King Abdullah forces women to cover their bodies in public and bans them from driving.
Now, you were saying the US is being stripped of her rights? Educate me on what rights you are talking about since I am soooooooo uninformed.........
Mario Alioto III
Hmmn, it was a good demonstration ploy and from the picture hard to see a rational reason for any fuss.
From Leslie's report, it doesn't seem that the public authorities, the Mayor and the cops cruising by, limited Leslie' rights -- true, this may well be because she was already a public figure.
That there were prudes -- even among demonstrator arrangers! -- can hardly surprise. The US must be the western capital of the Prudiverse...
It's kinna wierd, a bra can cover more skin than a bikini top, yet many will be offended to see it in public. Perhaps it is because the bikini is seen as an outer clothing (albeit skimpy) whereas the bra is underclothing and when the outer clothing is missing one is, to many minds, nekked.
But that still doesn't address why nekked should be, in itself, prurient or even obscene. The fact is, the appreciation of sexuality in many parts of the world is one sick puppy.
If it wasn't that it's about thirty years too late for this old fart, I kinna liked SiouxRose's suggestion.
Hey Mario old boy, do I detect a note of America love it(as is) or leave it? You ask what rights are we being stripped of, how about the right to habeas corpus for starters. As for your right to read whatever you like without being penalized, did you miss the bit with the nations librarians up in arms about being forced to release information about who checks out what types of books. How about your right to privacy being violated in the name of fighting terrorism.
Wait, wait, I know, you are an upstanding citizen with nothing to hide, so if the FBI or CIA or whomever wants to review your phone records without telling you that is okey dokey by you. Those rights are only important to people with something to hide anyway. I have heard it all before, and that boat don't float in My America!
How about your right to free speech? Are you quite certain it is still completely intact? Are you sure it will stay that way?
What's up with this?? I get it whenever I edit my original post.

Hey there Fatfreddyscat, Freedom comes at a cost. My grandparents fought for us to have what we have. They had rights limited to them during the war years. And what came out of it? A better America. If limiting some of the things we do will keep us from being attacked by terrorists, then I am all for it. If the government wants to check out what books I have read at the local library, it should go right ahead and do so if it believes I am a menace to society. The givernment can tap my phones if it believes I am going to blow up an airplane. There are more important things to life than telephone calls and library books.
If this country is soooooooooo bad like most of you are staying, why then do so many illegal immigrants come to this country for a jobs and rights? Believe it or not, more people come to this country than leave it every year. You don't hear these people complaining. I applaud them for coming into this country.... as long as they remain law abiding citizens.
Well Mario - I concede your right to your opinion, and I reserve my right to disagree most strenuously. In the past 6 years the current administration has been systematically striping us of our rights. You can find many a news article, or commentary on this site detailing the abuses by this administration in the name of fighting terrorism. I will not so easily acquiesce to this out of fear. I am not nearly as afraid of "the terrorist" as I am of the neo-fascists who seek to scare me into voluntarily giving up my civil liberties so they can protect me from a nebulous, and questionable enemy.
I would urge you to spend some time reading some of the information on this and other sites that reflect a view different from yours, you may begin to see that there are problems. Most of the contributers to this site seek to insure this country lives up to it's highest ideals of democracy and freedom for all.
It bothers me to know that there are still so many people out there who believe as you do. We have a long way to go and a short time to get there. If Bush & Co. have there way... well I guess we will live to see the reality to come.
Or perhaps we will be spared the worst, leaving it for our children to deal with.
