President Hostile To Scientific Facts That Conflict With Right-Wing Views
A veteran of combat and police sieges, Dr. Richard H. Carmona thought he knew a dangerous assignment when he saw it. But he didn't know what he was getting into when he signed up to be U.S. surgeon general in the administration of George W. Bush. He entered an unfamiliar, high-risk environment sprinkled with snipers and pockmarked by (political) land mines.
As the nation's top doc from 2002 to 2006, Dr. Carmona was ordered not to discuss embryonic stem cell research or the emergency contraceptive known as Plan B, he said last week in testimony before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. He was ordered to water down a report on the dangers of secondhand smoke.
He definitely couldn't point out the failings of abstinence programs. In speeches that were vetted by other political appointees, he was ordered to mention President Bush three times for every page.
Politics and a hard-right ideology, Dr. Carmona learned, trumped everything else, including the hard facts offered by science. "Much of the discussion was being driven by theology, ideology [and] perceived beliefs that were scientifically incorrect," he said.
Dr. Carmona, an Army Special Forces veteran and former leader of the Pima, Ariz., SWAT team, is just the latest in a parade of former Bush administration officials to criticize a White House that is hostile to science and impervious to the conclusions driven by its research. Modern-day know-nothings, Bush administration officials share with Islamist jihadists a profound distrust of modernity.
Unconvinced by the broad scientific consensus that endorses evolution, the president has argued for teaching the phony science of so-called intelligent design, arguing that "both sides ought to be properly taught ... so people can understand what the debate is about." For years, Mr. Bush was dismissive of a growing body of scientific research that left little doubt that human activity has caused global warming. Recently, he has sidled up to acceptance of the evidence, but he has done little to combat climate change.
And he has stood firm against the advance of embryonic stem cell research, a promising avenue that might eventually lead to cures for such maladies as diabetes, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's. Stingy with his veto pen, the president has exercised it only three times - two of those to block measures to broaden federal research on embryonic stem cells.
Last month, the president clung to a dubious rationale that values the "lives" of embryos over the lives of full-fledged children suffering with juvenile diabetes. His argument is even less rational if you consider the fate of the vast majority of leftover embryos: They will eventually be destroyed. Apparently, it's perfectly acceptable to dump those blastocysts in the trash. But using them to cure hideous diseases? That's unacceptable, according to Mr. Bush's moral principles.
Dr. Carmona believed that as the nation's top public health officer, he should be able to offer guidance on the subject of embryonic stem cell research "so that we can have, if you will, informed consent. I was told to stand down and not speak about it. It was removed from my speeches," he said.
When his four-year term was over, Dr. Carmona was not asked to stay. The Bush administration instead has found someone more to its liking, Dr. James W. Holsinger Jr., who has written, among other things, that homosexual sex is unnatural and unhealthy.
If Dr. Holsinger has also found that women should never occupy the Oval Office because they are hysterical and prone to fits of monthly distemper, he could be a candidate for the Presidential Medal of Freedom. That's the prize for those whose service in the Bush administration abuses the public trust but accommodates the president's political machinations.

Show AllAh the old songs are the best. A couple of weeks ago Cindy Sheehan reminded us all of the Sixties classic "Something in the Air", and now those of you up on your music history may recall the band Devo, who wrote a song about 'de-evolution' called "Jocko Homo" nearly thirty years ago. Observing all this from across the pond I must confess there is something of a morbid fascination watching the beast devour itself.
So here we are again; a "good doctor" (another one?) who allowed himself to be muzzled for four (4) years, "comes out" about the lack of candor and in some cases out right lies, by the President and the Republicans. Did he stay so long to assure that he could acquire a pension?
Did his conscience become "misplaced" only to be found 4 years later "in the bottom of a drawer where no one else looked before".
Is "altering the facts" a "lie" or just "misinformation"?
Does this "good doctor" please note the lower case lettering, this "dawg" (that is someone--usually a man, more often than not, of high office---- who will eat feces, lick his rectum, and copulate with his mother or sister) deserves little respect or consideration from the rest of humanity.
At least the Rats, who abandon the ship do not complain about having had hardships while afloat.
Yellow Horse
Keep on talking Doc! Some good might come of it.
Never mind the criticism of your possible pedigree; just keep on talking.
Devolution, indeed. We're only harming ourselves with Bush jejuness. For stupidity alone, the Bushists must be IMPEACHED!
For a laugh, read Michael Feldman's "New Hippocratic Oath" from last Friday's NY Times:

Yellow Horse is crude and correct. This guy's point would have been so much more powerful if he'd stood up for what he believed while in office. At this point he's just another has-been with a diluted message, another ex-general, another Colin Powell. This is precisely the whimpy attitude that is propagating the Bush monstrocity: indirect confrontation is next to useless.
I live in ky,where pretty much everybody is nice, and we are all at most one degree of sep.from knowing each other.dr.holsinger is a great guy-for a religious fanatic.he ain't nearly as bad as much of our legislature, our congressional delegation, and our medical and bar associations for that matter.more important than whether or not dean holsinger is a full blown snakehandler,or whether he kept his fanaticism within normal limits at his senate hearing,is for progressives to keep in mind that at heart the bushies are total corporatists who find this physician to be a useful idiot- a front man for their know-nothing,religious wedge issues.his nomination should be rejected, and he should come on home to folks who know him for what he is,and love him nonetheless.
If you want a President who is both devout Christian and advocate for science, you should support a Catholic candidate. Thanks in part to Pope John Paul II, who counted many leading Polish scientists among his closest friends, the Catholic Church sees no conflict between scientific truth and religious truth.
Too bad we have had only one Catholic President, despite the fact that more than one third the country is Catholic. Oh yeah, and he was assassinated. Curiously.
The irony of Bush's lack of belief in evolution has just hit me. He is living proof that there is a flaw in that theory.
This reminds me of the propaganda ministers in Nazi Germany in the 1930s. If you control the content you can shape the thinking and then many things are possible in manipulating the people.
One thing you have to say about this group, they control the message so that they stop controversy before it begins.
This might their form of a political proactive strategy. Unfortunately, the truth and science get muzzled in the process.
Hey jp!
Rather than Bush being "living proof of a flaw in the theory of eolution",he could be the missing link from homo erectus to homo sapiens.Even the Bush manner of walking gives little clues;arms and legs giving a passable imitation of John Wayne ready to blast away at the guy in the black hat.
I still marvel at the factors that put this THING into power at such a critical time in global affairs, earth's warming, the AIDS epidemic, the growing plight of poverty, etc. This individual and his cabal have held back evolution and progress, while championing war, more unapologetic burning of fossil fuels, and general disregard for mankind's estate. The 2000 election has held calamitous results for the entire world, and like a slow trainwreck, the FULL effect is not yet even visible or realized. What a horror to the children of the world, that this BASTARD has gutted their future and insured that some really awful things will become their destiny. When I ponder the selfishness of the court that placed these wounded neanderthals into power, the very meaning of justice, wisdom, sagaciousness, decency, civilization, truth become casualties.
Yellow Horse, - Well said
Of course he's singing now. They stopped paying him.
I think that anyone with actual principles would not be considered for Bu$h the inferior's administration.
It would be interesting to know the moral or ethical lapse that made this guy acceptable for Surgeon General. What if he would have stuck to the truth as he saw it until fired (refuse to resign).
Imagine if an ethical person could be in a position to have exposed Bu$h the inferior long ago. If this person would have made public statements and stuck to them even in the face of adversity.
Thanks, Joe Wilson, you were the guy who did what none of these ethics come lately characters did. Could it be that these recent rats off the ship have ethics activation by poll result?
I echo the comments re why he didn't make these comments while in office. At least Michael Clarke resigned and made public the run up to the Iraq war. I think more needs to made of the parallel between an ideological administration that fits "facts" to it's world view and Islamists who do much the same.
Bush is a murderous, immoral, antidemocratic SOB. He's in favor of dumping blastocysts in the trash because that, rather than stem cell research, paradoxically pleases his unthinking base (the "haves and the have mores"). End of story.
"As the nation's top doc from 2002 to 2006, Dr. Carmona was ordered not to discuss embryonic stem cell research or the emergency contraceptive known as Plan B, he said last week in testimony before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. He was ordered to water down a report on the dangers of secondhand smoke.

Well... who gave the orders and who edited the speeches and why didn't this idiot understand he was working for Aristocratic idealogues and not public servants? Unless this fool is willing to name names of people who potentially committed crimes please have a nice cup of shut the F up. Oh gee, they politicized another appointee position... boo hoo... Where was this guy when the acts were happening? Taking his paycheck just like everyone else, that's where.
What's interesting is that with the loss of habeas corpus, and the rise of the unitary executive (loss of the magna carta), as well as the re-introduction of the ideological lens or sieve through which science and empirical understanding must first pass, Bush seems to be most comfortable in the middle ages, or perhaps a couple centuries earlier.
Appears he's trying to return to the Holy Roman Empire? Charlemagne, 800 AD?
right on yellowhorse, and all you good people.
If we apply the "both sides ought to properly be taught" argument Bush uses for "intelligent design", why not also use it for teenage smoking? The tobacco companies would be entitled to equal time in the clasrooms. Kids would get "both sides" of the debate.
@FortheWhales
Not two sides, three sides surely? What about the theory of 'Unintelligent Design'. Whoever designed this ridiculous body clearly didn't know what they were doing. Testicles at kicking height? Testicles full stop really. Big saggy bosoms? All that squishy nasty stuff inside? Knees that only bend one way? No eyes in the back of the head? Bones that break, hair that falls out, spots, foul-smelling gas, nasty lumps of earwax? Doesn't sound very intelligent to me. Let's teach ALL sides of the argument and let people make their own minds up.

"Not two sides, three sides surely? What about the theory of 'Unintelligent Design'."
***Good points, Allblue, and hilarious without even mentioning contortionistic mating habits. That 'unintelligent designer' at least had a sense of humor, right?***
SCIENTIFIC BETRAYAL
Never before have Americans experienced such dangerous manipulation of essential scientific data, as used by this administration to derail vital environmental reforms, conservation, family planning-- and the list goes on. The resulting long term environmental and social damage are beyond measure, and can only worsen if not curtailed.
Despite their clandestine cloak, or environmental friendly disguise, these sellouts have been evident since Bush first was handed the presidency. They have been exposed by defectors from the EPA, health & human services, etc; and have been documented and chronicled by numerous dedicated environmental organizations including The Union of Concerned Scientists.
The gravity of these unprecedented betrayals eclipses the Monica Lewinski scandal which led to an impeachment, and pose greater dangers than Watergate which terminated a presidency. Blame falls mainly on the populace and our legislators for tolerating this reckless and arrogant occupant of the White House.
Who is to blame: the evil bastards for being themselves(evil), or the rest of the so called good people of this country( you and me) for letting them get away with everything they have done so far and will continue to do for as long as they can. These things can only happen when good people do nothing.
Sound science is an even bigger enemy to the likes of Bush/Cheney than any terrorist could ever be. Science is based on reason: the sober, objective collection and analysis of factual data, and the testing and re-testing of theories to explain phenomena. It encourages skepticism, demands empirical evidence to prove its claims, and, once proven, inspires a faith thousands of times stronger and enduring than any impassioned sermon from a pulpit, or, for that matter, the Oval Office.
It seems ironic to me that neocons would embrace (or perhaps only "promote") ideas like "intelligent design" over "evolution". After all, if one had to pick which of the two theories seems most compatible with the Apple-Pie rags-to-riches American Dream, wouldn't the second be a better fit?
"Evolution" is to "Meritocracy" what "Intelligent Design" is to "Divine Right".
Oh say does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave
o'er the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave?
Long live the King?
Apparently, we are not allowed to use leftover embryos from fertility clinics for stem cell research even though they are all eventually destroyed, because that would be "taking human life". Would someone please explain to me why there are no right-wing religeous nut cases picketing fertility clinics, threatening the patrons thereof, threatening to bomb them and killing the personel that work in them. Indeed, why aren't we arresting all people associated with fertility clinics that so wantonly destroy "human life", charging them all with murder and seeking the death penalty for them? What is the basis for this double standard? Why is it OK for fertility clinics to "murder" embryos, but not labs who are doing stem cell research, hoping to end suffering for millions?
I have come to the conclusion that we are going through a period of religeous mania in this world that actually threatens our very existance. Much if not all of the craziness in the world at the moment has its origin in religeous fanaticism. George Bush and many of his henchmen actually believe that they are on God's side on these issues, although in my opinion there has never been an administration less Christian or more evil and corrupt than this one. "Religion is as religion does", and right now, a lot of the religeous belief out there is on the wrong side of good v.s. evil.
Yellow Horse - Well said.
