Lieberman Lays the Groundwork For Another War
This week Joe Lieberman reprised a role he played so well in 2002. He paved the way for another needless and tragic war by outmaneuvering his Democratic colleagues on the Senate floor. This time he forced them to pass an amendment that seems reasonable on the surface, but which lays the groundwork a a new attack that could turn pro-Western Iranians into anti-American terrorists. It passed just as a new poll confirms that the Iranian leadership's policies are wildly unpopular with their own people.
Lieberman's 2002 "Rose Garden" appearance with Bush - where he endorsed the authorization for war in Iraq without further changes - destroyed ongoing negotiations to limit the President's war options that were taking place between Democrats like John Kerry and Republicans like Richard Lugar. (Kerry described that move - a betrayal of genuine bipartisanship - in our 2006 conversation.) Now he's done it again.
The Lieberman amendment sets the nation up for a Gulf of Tonkin moment - one that can be used to justify military strikes against Iran, with the President reassuring the nation that he has bipartisan support. It was worded in such a way that voting against it would have been political suicide for Senators.
Does that scenario sound familiar?
The amendment sounds reasonable enough on its face. (Text is here.) It asks for bimonthly reports from the military regarding "external support or direction provided to anti-coalition forces by the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran or its agents ... the strategy and ambitions in Iraq of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran; and .... any counter-strategy or efforts by the United States Government to counter the activities of agents of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Iraq."
It was a shrewdly worded document. Any Democrat who voted against it would have opened him- or herself up to accusations that of being afraid to face the facts about Iranian involvement in Iraq. And we know that Iran is involved in Iraq in certain ways. After all, it's been invited there - by the very government our troops are sacrificing themselves to defend. In fact, the Iraqi government is so close to its Shi'ite neighbor that it quickly invited it to open an embassy in Baghdad.
Predictably, the Lieberman measure passed 97-0. But it's not the reporting requirements themselves that are dangerous - it's the amendment's language. It lists a hodgepodge of undocumented and inflammatory accusations before stating that "the murder of members of the United States Armed Forces by a foreign government or its agents is an intolerable and unacceptable act of hostility against the United States by the foreign government in question." These are words that invite an act of war against Iran, even in the absence of clear evidence of involvement.
The amendment doesn't just ask for intelligence on Iranian activity. It requires ongoing reports on proactive U.S. efforts against alleged Iranian efforts, placing political pressure on our military to become more active against Iran. Word in Washington is that top military leaders are resisting an attack on Iran, saying we lack the resources. This is a great way to lean on the generals to change their minds.
Meanwhile, a poll of Iranians released by a bipartisan anti-terror group, Terror Free Tomorrow, shows results that will startle casual observers (but not those who follow the Middle East closely). As Director Ken Ballen writes, "80% of Iranians favor Iran offering full international nuclear inspections and a guarantee not to develop or possess nuclear weapons in return for outside aid. Moreover, close to 70% of Iranians also favor normal relations and trade with the U.S."
"More telling," Ballen adds, "over 79% of Iranians support a democratic system instead, in which the supreme leader, along with all leaders, can be chosen and replaced by a free and direct vote of the people."
Terror Free Tomorrow's only agenda is reducing worldwide terrorism, and the message is clear: An attack on Iran would turn its essentially pro-Western population against us, creating yet another breeding ground for anti-American terrorists. Diplomacy, not war, is the right move now - to avoid war, to promote regime change, and to prevent the further spread of terrorism. Yet war has become more likely, and diplomacy even more improbable, because the Senate was outmaneuvered yet again by Lieberman and his Administration allies.
As in the Soviet sphere, diplomacy does more than just reduce threats to world peace - although it certainly does that. It can also lead to regime change more effectively than violence does. That's why detente led to the fall of Communism. That's the lesson of recent history, and the lesson of the last five years is even more stark: Attacking a nation without just cause radicalizes its own people and destabilizes the region. Worldwide terrorism is up dramatically in the last five years, and the original Al Qaeda has become stronger since we invaded Iraq.
It's time to paraphrase George Santayana: "Those who would ignore current events are doomed to repeat them." It's not too late to prevent a disastrous attack on Iran, but time is growing short. And current events may repeat themselves very soon.

Show AllEven the poll results will be used by our war fascists as an excuse to attack Iran. The fact that such large majorities of Iranians are in disagreement with their leaders, and want a different method of electing them, will be touted as "proof" that the locals will be throwing flowers and candies at our troops when the US invades.
--Except that the intent is to use air power only. Guess they will be throwing flowers and candies at the cruise missiles and bombers.
Alas, what more does poor Joe Lieberman have to do to prove to the world how much he hates Arabs, hates Christians, hates America, loves only Israel and it's dual citizenship war profiteers, the ones who overruled the people of Connecticut and placed this malignancy back in office? People pay attention. Little cauliflower face is pleading for understanding.
Exactly who owns Mr. Liberman's mouth?
The problem is not Joe Lieberman. He is what he is. Always has been. Always will be.
The problem is first that the Democratic Party failed to rally around their own nominated candidate, millionaire Ted Lamont, (who was no great shakes either) in the Connecticut US Senatorial election.
And that a majority of Connecticut voters chose Lieberman - how many times?
A bigger problem is that not a single United States Senator bothered to read the legislation in front of her/him and understand its very significant ramifications (i.e. nuking Iran, for example.)
Outmaneuvered? Come on. They apparently can't even read.
Even a worse problem is the absolute hold that the AIPAC/pro-Israel lobby has on both houses of the US Congress and the POTUS. One reason that senators can't read is that they let lobbyists read (and even write) legislation for them.
But then again I'm just another raving anti-semite for suggesting such heresies.
I mean the vote was 97-0. There's no problem at all.
Please be honest enough to also say that Carl Levin--Democratic senator from Michigan--co-sponsored the amendment. Both Levin and Lieberman are shils for AIPAC, which, together with the neocons and Israel, are pushing a war against Iran. Not a single Democrat has told the truth about Iran--that it has every right under international treaty to develop nuclear energy. Israel's paranoia over Iran having the bomb in the future is no justification for a pre-emptive strike now. Israel should have thought about the repercussions of nuclear development before it built its own bomb. Bullies hate it when others fight back.
Lieberman is a paid Israeli agent and a Republican supporter masquerading as a democrat in an effort to spy on them. What a charlatan.

One of the first blogs I ever wrote here on Commom Dreams, was about a high ranking officer in the military of Israel, who was here at a local Christian church telling the large congregation how and why Isreal may attack Iran, and implied Isreal had nuclear weapons and not to be surprised if they were used. The man was well recieved by the audience.
In my opinion, that is just one more method of getting the idea of attacking Iran accepted by a large number of far right Americans and a lot of those who are just badly mis-informed. I understand that was being done at churches all across the country. The powers are lining up their ducks and Senator Joseph Lieberman is one of the major duck liner uppers.
I just went into the archives to see when I wrote that blog and fear I may be writing far to many blogs and should give a rest. It sure is easy to tell I'm retired, or I just have a great big yap.___ Sorry.
To think that Joe could have been a VP in Al Gore's administration is disturbing. I had no idea at first, why Al picked him. I did not even know who he was. I think Joe should be quiet and let things move along. We do not need him making controversial comments.

Lieberman the reason Gore should cool himself cooling the globe in '08.
dual citizenship politicians? It is farcical, dangerous and very very undemocratic.
if slobberman is so anxious to start a war with iran, then he should enlist and attack them all by himself. little man with tiny balls. what a disgrace
yeah, and we need to put the democrats back in power so we can have peace!
97-0?
The best clue to Ole Joe's character is the 2000 election. I looked down my Connecticut ballot and here is Ole Joe running for Vice President. But wait! Here he is again - running for U.S. Senator. How can this be? If Al Gore had won and Ole Joe also won for Senator, one Connecticut Senate seat would have been empty, leaving the appointment to the Republican Governor Rowland (soon to be in the chokey for a couple of years. That would mean that he close vote in the Senate would have one more Republican member. Has anyone ever run for two offices on the same ballot before? As for Iran, I fear they are in for the same suffering as the poor people of Iraq are experiencing now. The two (or is it three?) carrier groups in the Tonkin - oops - Persian Gulf - a long, relatively narrow body of water with one narrow exit - is just asking for some sort of incident - staged, if necessary. Then away we go - "Rember Pearl Harbor!" or "Remember the Maine!" Forget about Iraq - maybe there is a chance that the U.S. populace can learn that this bombing war against Iran will give the chance for the U.S> people to suffer as they haven't in the Iraq war. When the first bomb hits Iran in the Lebenon type air war that is coming, all crude oil shipments from Iran cease. Venezuela, in sympathy suddenly discovers that its oil wells and refineries need repairs and halves its oil exports. A pissed-off Putin pulls the same tactic and the world oil market goes bonkers and the U.S. populace gets a chance to suffer in the deep recession that follows gasoline prices going to about $10 a gallon. If hte peace movements in this country would devote all its efforts towards preventing the horrs that will be visited on Iran as its infrastructure (but not its oil wells) are laid waste. This Washington gang has no intention of leaving Iraq in the remainig 17 months. Let all the signs read "Bonbing Iran equals $10 a gallon gasoline!!!"
Yeah, what gasoline? By a bike___ Made in China.
Let this chickenshit excuse for a decent human being get out near the pointy end of the sword before he starts rooting for war.

One problem with the Eskow article is that it cites the Lieberman amendment as Lieberman wrote it, not as it ultimately passed the Senate 97-0.

There were at least two crucial modifications to Liebermann's amendment before it passed. You can look it up in the Congressional Record (look for CR S9001-9002). Here is briefly what they are:-
First, this following clause was added to the end of the Lieberman amendment:
" (d) Nothing in this section shall be construed to authorize or otherwise speak to the use of Armed Forces against Iran."
Second, a clause was amended to read
" (1) the murder of members of the United States Armed Forces by a foreign government or its agents is an intolerable and unacceptable act against the United States by the foreign government in question; and"
(compare with the original Lieberman language
" (1) the murder of members of the United States Armed Forces by a foreign government or its agents is an intolerable and unacceptable act of hostility against the United States by the foreign government in question; and"
)
starkly put is the disaster in iraq worth more american lives. let's say just 50. and should america be seeking some form of redemption for the 934,000 estimated iraqui civilians who have been killed since the invasion? where is is the country's moral compass. americans live in a state of wilful blindness and no one tells them that they are hated around the world and while once admired they are now seen as pariahs. a sad, sad tale.
Does Lieberfilth draw more pay as a Senator or as an AIPAC whore ?
