US Opposition to Iraq War Hits New High: Poll
WASHINGTON - Opposition to the Iraq war has climbed to a record high and President George W. Bush's approval rating dropped to a new low amid growing dissent from members of his own Republican party over his war strategy, according to a new USAToday/Gallup poll.
Bush's approval dropped to 29 percent in the poll taken Friday through Sunday, down from 33 percent in early June, USA Today reported on Tuesday.
One in five Americans said the increase in U.S. forces in Iraq this year has made the situation there better while half said it has made no difference, the newspaper said.
More than seven in 10 Americans favor withdrawing nearly all U.S troops from Iraq by April, the newspaper said.
More than half, 55 percent, said Congress should wait to hear an assessment from Gen. David Petraeus before developing new Iraq policy, the report said.
Petraeus, the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, is due to deliver his findings in September, but 40 percent of those polled said Congress should act now, the paper said.
Sixty-two percent of those polled said the United States made a mistake in sending troops to Iraq, marking the first time that number has topped 60 percent in this survey, USA Today said.
The poll also showed support for Bush slipping among Republicans who gave him a 68 percent rating, down from an average 92 percent in his first term and 82 percent earlier in his second, USA Today said.
According to the report, nearly four in 10 Republicans cited the immigration debate, which ended in defeat for Bush's overhaul proposal, as the reason for losing confidence in him.
The poll of 1,014 adults, taken Friday through Sunday has an error margin of plus or minus three percentage point.

Show AllAmeriKKKa was in Viet Nam murdering women and children for 10 years, 2 million to be nearly exact
Stay the course, GW Bush and the 29% that approve of him haven't murdered enough women and children yet!!!!!
Don't look so upset George. You should have conducted the invasion of Iraq correctly right at the beginning and you chose not to. That's all. Well, aforementioned plus the choice of invading Iraq in the first place, which was foolish. Don't take it to heart the fact that the vast majority of human beings despise you. You still have the ignorant and cruel human beings around who think you are a genius and find your cause in a slow and painful Iraq Genocide noble. Of course, you also chose to go against the majority of American's wishes to going there in the first place; yet, promote Democracy worldwide. This opinion you have on Democracy, quite frankly, makes you out to be a hypocrit.
OMG!! That FACE, those BEEDY LITTLE EYES, that sociopathic vibe!!! America is sooooooo f'cked.
Is his nose just sunburned or do the broken blood vessels that are so visible lend credibility to the rumors that he's fallen off the sobriety wagon?
It does expose their MO, they only pay attention to that dwindling approvial rating; when it gets below 30% they sit up and take notice. Thats the only time constituents exist in their little world!
Oh Yes! Looks like Bush need a little powder on that nose of his.
They'll be withdrawing to Africa to fight the next oil wars w/ China. Do some googling
What about Blackwater? It scares me that it never gets mentioned!
Bush doesn't care about polls.
Never mind that Bush doesn't read polls . . . He doesn't read.
Maybe he can't understand any words that are longer than 4 letters.
Unless of course the words are "Yes and Sir" . . . . .
All children should be taught that no government can excuse murder, that is the intentional killing of another human being that is not in self-defense or the defense of others. Every individual that pulls a trigger or lets a bomb drop must recognize that they are making a choice to kill someone, quite possibly someone who never harmed anyone else. That individual must convince himself/herself that it is a justifiable killing. Regardless of the law, the government, the president, and the military commanders cannot really absolve someone of murder.
Yes, we are all guilty to some degree of unjustifiable killing by our military if we pay our taxes, but the indirectness is such that it would matter little if we did not (Bush and fellow predators would just operate with a little more debt -- that never stopped them).
But those who would directly kill must be taught as children that it is their choice, and they cannot blame anyone else or believe that anyone else can absolve them of the guilt. And then maybe they will be more critical when someone tries to convince them to kill and that the killing is justified.
How can 68% of Republicans still be brain dead? Bu$h the inferior only helps 1% of the population at most, maybe 5% of Republicans.
Please tell you children torture is always wrong and stop watching 24 and the other asinine shows with that ticking clock day saved by torture plot.
A little childish foot stomping and Bush gets his way. Congress needs to do the little bit of parenting that should have been done long ago. Probably too late now. Spoiled children are unbearable and they grow up to be spoiled adults who are down right deplorable. Maybe we should ask Congress, "Just who is in charge here?"
His nose is that color from repeated dunkings in Big Oil's rectum
dialog balloon for pic should read "This whole gig sucks!"
It may be George's face but I will never forget Nixon's eyes and those are them. Incidentally, we can't smell George's breath over the TV but I can talk better than he can when I can't even walk.
The only polls that should really count are those of Iraqi people who have constantly said they want the coalition of the killing out of Iraq.
When and if the troops pull out, where would the go? Come home, or camp in Kuwait, or join the Afghan war? Would Afghan war intensify then? Does withdrawal cover the U.S. troops in Afghanistan too, or do we still have a war going on there, nonetheless? Too many questions, and no answer yet.
eewww, those thin, cruel lips of his.....Bush gives me the creeps. He definitely does not have anything close to what looks like a kind face.
Not until that Iraq oil bill is signed, sealed, and delivered to the American oil companies who authored it is there a snowball's chance in hell that American troops will come home. "The Iraqis are understandably concerned about the draft law because oil is Iraq's economic lifeblood: It accounts for nearly 70 percent of GDP and more than 95 percent of government revenues. But the draft oil law would take over three-fourths of Iraq's oil fields out of the hands of the Iraqi government and put them in the pockets of Western companies. These companies would not be obliged under the new law to meet minimum standards in partnering with Iraqi firms, hiring Iraqi workers or investing profits in the Iraqi economy. The law also allows for production-sharing agreements, corporate-friendly deals that have been rejected by every other country in this region, and with good reason: They grant foreign firms control of resources and profits for as long as 20 to 30 years, or an entire generation" (Editorial, Daily Star, 9 July 07).
NICE PIC!!!! Is this the NOSE/EYES/FEATURES of a DRINKER/SNORTER/DRUG ABUSER? Yes or No - TIMES UP! Did you Pass or Fail? WE ARE IN REALLY DEEEEEEEEEP DOO DOO with this guy at the wheel, folks...................
Hey, if you want to feel better, go to truthdig.com and watch Michael Moore give CNN's Wolf Blitzer and Dr. Sanjay Gupta a royal ass-chewing. Moore also takes Blitzer to task about his false and inaccurate criticisms of Fahrenheit 911. You all really should watch it. It is great!
What did you think Satans protege would look like? Why dont we give God amnesty and let him back into schools so moral deficiencies will go back to there hole.
Don't think for a second that Bush and Co. do not read polls. They just say they don't. That is a myth they like to perpetuate to support the false image he has, or had anyway.
IMPEACH, IMPEACH, IMPEACH
bcimpeach.com is the new impeachment center in Los Angeles.
bush*/cheney* is the unholy alliance of the Texas-American Petroleum Cartel (exxon/mobile) and the Military Industrial Complex. bush* is Charlie McCarthy to cheney*'s Edgar Bergen, and both are as evil a bastard that has ever walked this Earth. This country will long rue the day we allowed a criminal, negligent Supreme Court of the United States foist this plague upon us. This is the lowest time in our country's history. Truly madmen govern.
9/11 an INSIDE JOB? Follow the $$$$$$$$$/Who benifitted? Not much doubt here.
"Is his nose just sunburned or do the broken blood vessels that are so visible lend credibility to the rumors that he's fallen off the sobriety wagon?"
I'm extremely familiar with that pattern of ruddy blood vessels across the cheeks and nose from two alcoholics I knew while growing up. You're correct.
in a democracy this sort of poll would have mattered.
Is there any chance we can strap Bush in a lawn chair with ballons tied to it and cut the ropes??
I too, am truly amazed that "68%" are STILL supporting the Puppet in OUR White House. By my figuring, the number is about 16%. If the elections results of 2000 and 2004 are of any enlightenment to this statistic, then ALL polls are suspect of corrupted outcomes. OUR mainstream mass media outlets are shoveling the government's propaganda, as usual.
Lies, Damn, Bold-face Lies, and ?
Well.it is confirmed...Bush is a no good drunk and coke user.If this is not the face of a mentally defective person who has no integrity or sense of reality. Just watch his eyes when he is giving a speech and you will see the torment in his eyes, He is ready to explode and it is probably the drugs and booze that keep him from the path of reality.
Never underestimate a cornered rabid dog, he will attack even though he knows he is finished.
Bush will go down in history as the worst and most corrupt president ever, His legacy will be one similiar to Hitler and the other mass murderers we remember from history.
Is it any wonder that his wife wants out.she sees him for what he is, a dangerous loser who has failed in every thing he has ever done in life including his political life.
Many countries of the world have started a civil war for less than Bush and Co have done to this nation.
When will the people of this country have the backbone to take to the streets and let their voices be heard. If they are not concerned with what is happening in this country, then they deserve exactly what they get.
Look at the concern the people of the USA had when it came to voting. Look at the numbers and then compare it with how many voted for American Idol...a sad state of affairs.
God help us all........
Raster has it right, bush is a puppet to cheney, although, I hate to smear the good name of Edgar and Charlie by the comparison. The comedian and puppet team, Edgar and Charlie, for those of you under 50, made people laugh and enjoy life. Little bush and cheney only spread death. Don't forget, that cheney is also a puppet to the "hidden powers" of the super-rich elite.
Impeach cheney first, then little bush, then ship both off to the Hague for trial and punishment. Hang 'em high, they deserve to die!
Impeachment won't work! The only thing that will work here is a wooden stake driven through his heart, or what passes as a "heart" in a creature without a shred of conscience or humanity!
walticular,
I agree with much of what you say, but as many have commented here over the months, a great deal of money and effort was spent to poison the brand names of "communism" and "socialism" for the general public in the US and around the world and now it may be better to label any movement or party that seeks to provide for the welfare of the whole of human society as "progressive." "Anti-corporate" or maybe even "anti-fascist" might work, though most prefer to identify with something that is more than just "anti" something else.
macmac,
Consider the alternative to impeachment/conviction, that's another year and a half of bushco.
Congress has betrayed those of us who voted for the change from Republican control.
Without impeachment/conviction of both dick and george, the "war" will not stop, that is, it will not stop until the election gets close enough that the incumbents of the president's own party are ready to throw him out.
The Iraq genocide should never have started. To let it continue is criminal.
Impeach NOW, don't wait another 17 or 18 months.

too add to your excellent post..
I personally liked it better when we just funded dictatorships and gave those tyrants weapons of mass destruction, or funded Guerilla insurgents in countries in order to install a dictatorship we liked over a democratically elected government. Why can't we just do that. Too much money to be made i suppose. But if i had to choose between two models of imperial foreign policy...
and while we're at it, why not just ignore the international standard and law that one government cannot use it's military/intelligence to assassinate members of anothers. Such as law is quaint and obselete. Just like the Geneva conventions, international laws agreed upon by all nations of the world designed to prevent Holocausts and Nazi fascist from reoccuring, were deemed obselete by the Bush Administration.
Don't make comparisons to nazi facism though. The admin is just ignoring the laws designed to prevent nazism and facism in the first place.
Look for it to hit 16% by the time his term is up.
And of course, now we have Democratic senator Durbin now trying to explain why this war must go on and on and on.... The only important thing to note from that story is that when support for the war erodes, its the Democrats who step up and act to try to keep it going.
If you want change and an end to war, please stop voting Democrat.

"Impeachment won't work! The only thing that will work here is a wooden stake driven through his heart, or what passes as a "heart" in a creature without a shred of conscience or humanity!"
***A few years ago I ran across an article claiming Bush (and Kerry, too) were both decendents of Vlad the Impaler. That's right the monster commonly known as...Count Dracula! Point well made macmac...anyone got a stake handy?***
Without impeachment, we'll see more of what we are already seeing. An out-of-control, lame-duck president who thinks he is free to do whatever he wants to do.
Bush, with support and approval from the Democrats in the Senate has stacked the courts with right-wing crazies who actually seem to generally agree with Bush's bizarre views on the Constitution.
And the Democrats in Congress have openly and specifically said they won't use the tools the constitution gives them to control an president who goes out-of-control ... that is the power of the purse and impeachment.
So, naturally Bush thinks he has a green light to do whatever he wants. And since Americans wasted their votes on a Democratic congress instead of voting in Greens who would really be an opposition, he's right.
I support the Greens as being the only way to get anything accomplished.
Down with the money party, they have the money because we are the cheap labor!
It is very convenient for the heads of various governments to call " King's X " about assassinations of each other's current leaders: maybe it might be better if the rule were to read, " I'll do your's if you'll do mine."
How funny it is when a country's majority is against a war yet it still rages on.
Skycordia, yes, it is strange isn't it. We taxpayers are footing the expense of the war and occupation in Iraq. We have voiced our dissatisfaction regarding it and have been totally ignored by Congress. That goes to show you that we have no representation. Taxation without representation -- isn't that what the Boston Tea Party was about?
