Obama's Muslim Heritage
JAKARTA—Barack Hussein Obama Jr. spent part of his youth here in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation.
The entrance foyer to his elementary school has a photograph, 2 metres by 1.3 metres, of the hajj, the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.
Ten steps into the crowded rectangular courtyard and you can see his old homeroom, adjacent to the stairway leading to the second floor mosque, where he studied Islam.
He had a different name then, Barry Soetoro, after his stepfather.
His mother, the Kansas-born Ann Dunham, first married a Kenyan, Barack Hussein Obama. Her second husband was the Indonesian Lolo Soetoro, with whom she moved here in 1967.
Obama was enrolled in a Catholic primary school, and then for his Grades 3 and 4 in what is now called the Model Primary School, a much-sought after public school in an elite leafy neighbourhood.
Three of his teachers have said he was enrolled as a Muslim. In his autobiography, Dreams From My Father, he mentions his Qur'an studies here.
A classmate of his in Jakarta has said that Obama used to wear a sarong and accompany his father to the neighbourhood mosque, but that his mother used to go to church.
All of which sounds about right for a mixed marriage. But in post-9/11 America, any association with Islam can be toxic for a presidential candidate. So his detractors are emphasizing it and he is running from it.
When Fox Television claimed in January that he had attended a "madrassa," his office said: "Senator Obama has never been a Muslim, was not raised a Muslim and is a committed Christian who attends church in Chicago."
But in a later statement, it hedged, saying that he has "never been a practising Muslim." And his stepsister, Maya Soetoro, felt compelled to say: "My father never went to prayer services except for big communal events. I am absolutely certain that he did not go to services every Friday."
How observant Obama himself was, or if he was a Muslim at all, is murky. With the school records missing, eaten by bugs, one has to rely on people's shifting memories.
Tine Hahiyari, a retired teacher — who told Los Angeles Times correspondent Paul Watson that Obama was registered as a Muslim — tells my interpreter that she can no longer recall what he was.
Ahmad Solichin, a teacher, tells me that another retired teacher told him that Obama was enrolled as a Christian.
Headmaster Kuwadiyanto (he has only one name) and vice-principal Hardi Priyono are amused by the controversy and the parade of Americans to the school — three members of the U.S. embassy here and nine visiting reporters, so far.
The school is not a madrassa. But the majority of its 475 students being Muslim, the biggest religion class is in the mosque. The day of my visit being a Friday, the girls are wearing the hijab and the boys the kufi skull cap, and both attend the noon prayers.
The 70 Christian kids go down the corridor to a chapel, and the lone Hindu boy is taken to a temple.
Rather than obfuscating his past, this is what Obama should be saying: "I am a proud Christian, as is my wife, Michelle Robinson. Both my father and stepfather were Muslims, and I myself had a brush with Islam in the Far East. That's no crime. In fact, it'll be a huge asset for the next president, who'll have to clean up the mess left behind by George W. Bush."

Show AllI wouldn't want a Muslim president. On the other hand, if Muslims view Obama as an apostate from Islam he may find himself on the receiving end of a Khomeini/Robertson-style fatwa.
No matter which era we live in, we will always find some 'flag' to gather under and group some of us superior to others just by virtue of being part of the flag. As we gracefully enter the 21st century, we find 2 such flags quite common. First being 'American' and second having any association with Islam.
And to spice things up, Media has done a great job in making the case for both of the above. Being an American automatically makes one 'privileged', and being a Muslim or having anything to do with Islam even remotely ... automatically makes one a CRIMINAL.
I wouldn't want to be someone who supports a President merely based on his religious association, and neither would I want a President who bases his decision by talking to 'higher command' instead of those who he has sworn to serve.
I don't care if its a black man with Muslim heritage, or a women ... as long as he/she can do only one thing right, I will vote for them. That one thing is to Protect the Constitution of America.
I do want a Muslim President and I wish Obama was a Muslem, unapologetically. As President, he could announce that he deeply respects Islam and is ordering all troops out of Muslem territory. When our troops come home, what grounds for continued terrorism would exist? They have said repeatedly that they are fighting because of infidel boots on their sacred soil. If they continued their terrorism after our withdrawal, then we could fight them with a clear conscience, a clear conscience that we certainly don't have now.
Ron, that's ridiculous. If a Morman can't win, a Muslim definately can't win. And just because he's a Muslim doesn't mean he'll do the right thing in the Mideast. None of the candidates is going to shred U.S. hegemony in that region because of the oil, and the bases to safeguard the oil (not to mention the dishonor of retreat, the Israeli lobby, and the fear of "fighting them here").
Obama is currently a Christian and long time member of the United Church of Christ. In this area, a lot of children go to Quaker run schools. Are they then automatically Quakers? Nope, they are still Jewish/Buddhist/Muslim/Hindi or whatever. I hope Obama did have the opportunity to study Islam, as well as other religions. Precisely that will help quell the insane discrimination and misunderstanding of the various religions in the world.
The founding fathers and specifically Ben Franklin stated clearly that any person elected to office is eligible regardless of his religious beliefs. Even the Khalif would have qualified for elected office provided he does uphold the constitution. That is the oath of office. Who cares if he is a ....... whatever religion......
PS
If we were to elect a "muslim" perhaps that would be the ultimate coup against Al Qaeda
Muslims try desperately in third world countries to blur the lines between native religions and then try to convert in the ensuing chaos.
Obviously Barry has been part of this chaos, which his father was trying to establish.
OK, lets answer the real question -
Will he make a good president?
you mean barak "all options are on the table for nuking my muslim brothers in iran" obama? in this islamophobic country, anybody running for office is running from islam. and running to our lard jeeebus.
Ok, a rant. How is it that a religious affiliation becomes a 'people'? How is there any such thing as 'muslim land'? There are countries where a majority of the ppl living there are muslim, but does this actually make it 'muslim land'? It seems more and more ppl are tolerating the idea that religious affiliation has the same meaning(as thus rights) as language or culture or nationality in defining a people or group. Islam is not a nationality, nor is any other religion. Does the future hold Utah being "mormon land" or Italy being "Catholic land"? Is our country now 'sacred Christian land" b/c the majority claims to be Christian? I'm sorry for the rant, but I see real danger here. Organized religion is making a HUGE assault when it declares itself a sovereign power. I'm for saying no religion may claim sovereignty over ANY land. And their can't be organized religious heritage b/c religion is not an ethnic group nor culture!
I agree with "mey" and "massud." Religion has no association with either the peoples of a country or with politics. It would otherwise imply a theocracy. Okay, maybe the US is becoming a theocracy...who knows? Does that mean that Canada and other western nations are atheistocracies since we are not overtly religiously positioned?
One thing I REALLY dont want is another born-again christian as president. In fact the perfect president will not divulge his or her religious leanings to begin with. How far we have come from what our friggin founders had in mind !!
One more reason why religion and politics should stay the hell away from one another.
"In fact the perfect president will not divulge his or her religious leanings to begin with."
Exactamundo! It shouldn't even be an issue.
If I were running for president, and I was asked, I'd say, "nonya business".
And who cares anyway? Obama is a lukewarm candidiate at best. In fact, I doubt he's even in it to win it. This is a publicity grab.
It looks like AIPAC, Hillary, et al have done some background research. As the election gets closer, we'll witness a lot more mud slinging. Knowing what I know about the American psychology and political discourse (swift boating, racism, Islamophobia, etc), my advice to Obama is to get out of the race as fast as he can, and spend the corporate donated money to live happily for the rest of his life. You have no chance in hell in America if you just happened to pass a mosque once, or if you shook a black man's hand. Take this piece of advice from me as your freelance campaign advisor. You'll be happy you did.
The Obama campaign is going to be really great for the world to see, again America's racism, sexism, and anti-muslim paranoia will be all to evident. The idea that because he had a muslim upbringing albeit however brief will taint his candidacy is purely upsurd however it provides ample fodder for any right wing republican lunatic to ignite the ignorant passions of hate and fear that define modern America. I would not vote for Obama because I can already see he too is a politician who stands for not much of anything than correct positioning as he continues to duck his muslim heritage and muslims and blacks here in America. He wants to appeal to the center that is bent on destroying him and they will.
A couple of the comments above make me sympathize with ordinary Muslims all over the world who have to put up with ignorance and Islamaphobia, but in general, it's nice to see some very perceptive and thoughtful responses. To clarify: "madrassa" simply means "school:" it's gotten to be a dirty word, thanks to the shallow coverage of Islam in the American media. Like any school, here or elsewhere, Christian or Jewish, a maddrassa can take on the coloration (moderation or extremism) of its headmaster, financer, or teachers. I can't help but think all of us would benefit from a little cultural broadening by experiencing different schooling systems, even right here in the good ol' USA.
I don't know whether I'll end up favoring Obama or not: it depends much more on how true he can be to himself as opposed to whatever image he and his political handlers think he should project.
Thank you massud! I have been saying for years that a religion is not a country. Look at Israel. Yes a large portion of their people are Jewish. It does not mean that if you don't like the Country that you hate Jews.
But if we don't vote for someone because of their religion we are being the biggist BIGGOTS. We preach to others about basing their Constitution on religion and here where there is supposed to be a separation of Church and State, we won't vote for someone who isn't Christian? Bullcrap.
Who cares if he is atheiest? If he is going to do a good job for the people, that should be all that matters.
i am sorry by some one make it as a probleme b/c befor u tolk any thing should know about that thing so i invite all the reader SEARCH KNOWLADEGE about islam and read QURAN
