UK and US Must Quit Iraq Quickly, Says Former Ambassador
The British and American military presence in Iraq is worsening security across the region and should be withdrawn quickly, the UK's former ambassador to Washington warned yesterday.
Sir Christopher Meyer acknowledged that leaving Iraq would be "painful", but said the mission was not worth the death of one more serviceman. "I personally believe that the presence of American and British and coalition forces is making things worse, not only inside Iraq but the wider region around Iraq. The arguments against staying for any greater length of time themselves strengthen with every day that passes," Sir Christopher said.
He added: "I think the Iraqis are in fact sorting themselves out - often bloodily - independent of what we're doing."
The former diplomat, posted in Washington in the runup to the 2003 invasion, was giving evidence to the Iraq Commission in London. The cross-party group - modelled on America's Iraq Study Group - was set up by the Foreign Policy Centre thinktank and Channel 4 to examine possible options for Britain's future role.
British commanders in Iraq have drawn up a plan for the withdrawal of almost all UK troops within 12 months, as one of several options to be presented to Gordon Brown when he takes over as prime minister. But Sir Christopher said Mr Brown was unlikely to announce a unilateral troop withdrawal that was not coordinated with the United States.
He acknowledged that foreign policy decisions were always "fraught with risk". But asked about criticisms of withdrawal, he replied: "It always seemed to me this was one of the key moral arguments in Iraq, that however bad things were ... the overriding requirement for us was to be able to say to parents and relatives in Britain, your sons and daughters did not die in vain. I think we have now crossed the line - we now have to say the mission is no longer worth another life of a British or American serviceman."
Sir Christopher's controversial book, DC Confidential, argued that the coalition failed to plan for securing and rebuilding Iraq in the aftermath of the invasion.
Sir Richard Dannatt, head of the army, said last year that the British should "get ourselves out sometime soon because our presence exacerbates the security problems".
Oliver Burch, of Christian Aid, told the commission that reconstruction efforts by the military had made the work of aid agencies harder in some ways.
It meant military operations were run alongside humanitarian work.
"For that reason those who do not like the coalition forces do not like NGOs either," he said.
The commission, chaired by Lord King, Lord Ashdown, and Lady Jay will report in mid-July after hearing evidence from a range of military and policy experts.

Show AllWhat exactly will it take for the dunderheads in DC to stop sending more young Americans to Iraq to die in pursuit of an illusory "victory"? I don't know, but all our energies must be brought to bear in joining voices like Mr. Meyer to do what it takes.
The Iraq War has always been for the purpose of controlling that country's oil wealth, and from there controlling petroleum supplies throughout the entire region.
Reducing dependence upon petroleum cannot be achieved by developing alternate fuels alone,(bio-fuels, hydrogen, syn-gas). There is no replacement for petroleum that will allow industrialized nations to maintain current levels of energy and fuel consumption.
Closer to the crux of the matter is the corporate vision/scheme for a new world order centered around globalization's 'unsustainable' amount of long-distance travel and transport of goods. Sudden disruption of fuel supplies will trigger destruction to every nation whose economy remains utterly dependent upon global trade, long-distance transport of goods, vast daily commuting. Economies dependent upon tourism are likewise vulnerable.
The New World Order is a death trap only the rich will survive. Are Neo-conservatives initiating WWIII? Did Prescott Bush not realize his business dealings with Hitler would lead to WWII?
Another book with the same message...
And, with Tony Blair, the lapdog, leaving, why shouldn't UK leave Iraq without Bush's permission?
When will the US CONGRESS understand that they HAVE TO HOLD BUSH AND CHENEY ACCOUNTABLE?
They certainly don't do it be giving them billions more to CONTINUE the war.
We need to ELECT REPRESENTATIVES who will VOTE US OUT OF IRAQ!!!! We need NO MORE BLUE DOG DEMOCRATS who throw in with the Republicans every chance they get and feed at the trough of the same corporate lobbyists.

Well that's what I've been saying before this mess ever got started. I have let my Congressman know many times that the presence of our troops is the problem not the solution. He never listens though.
We shold leave Iraq immediately and we shold not have been there in the first place. Well, it is easy to say and write about, but you can bet you last dime that we will have troops in Iraq for many more years, no matter how much is said or written on the subject.
Our country is building a mlti-billion dollar embassy complex in Baghdad, it is NOT going to be left empty; IRAQ is rich with oil and we will not leave until that well is dry. There are just too many powerful people, both democrats and republicans, who will insure we don't leave.
Now, someone will likely answer this and state that I'm full of it. One may write something like, WE THE PEOPLE rule our nation and we will have our way. Sorry, WE THE PEOPLE did not elect George Bush to the presidency either time he ran for the office; our supreme court elected him the first time and voter fraud in Florida and or Ohio insured he was re-elected. NO, we didn't elect Bush, but he's in there and HE makes the rules and is getting asway with it. Sadly, WE THE PEOPLE have lost our influence in America. We don't bother to vote, at least 50% or more of us don't, and we often elect people who run the best TV ads.
No, by and large our elected elite do not pay attention to us and as one writer related here, he talks to his elected officials but they do not listen. The elected listen to cold hard cash, which primarily comes to them from wealthy corporations. I could go on, but I'm afraid I take up too much room on this website and should let others vent their spleens writing their opiniions.
I personally, like the vast majority of Americans, do not know what to do about this mess in Iraq and no one else, those in power, who could do the right thing -- WON'T! Unless and until we have a fair, strong, honest and sensible president, the Iraq war will continue and we will have troops there for a very long time. I sincerely wish I were wrong about this. We'll see.
American Occupation of Iraq,
daily deaths of all humans in Iraq,
is "moral equivalent" of slavery !
Abolitionists for end of slavery !
Abolitionists for end of American Empire !
Pull Out Now !
What the American regular working stiff must come to understand is: its not about corp. interrests or oil necisarily but rather the concept in this capiltalist system where some ,those who hold great wealth and power doing anything and everything to hold on to their privelege.until that paradyme is broken there is little hope.
I am sure that the enlightened leaders in their wise councils in the UK and US will read these type of articles and listen to their constituents slap themselves on the forehead and say oops.
Anyone who is not convinced that US and UK policies both foreign and domestic have been almost entirely disastrous should be removed from any position of influence.
I hope people get their act together, find out candidates voting record (speeches are useless) and weed out these tools.
The only way troops are going to be pulled out of Iraq is going to be when they are re-deployed into Iran. This is just the beginning folks. This is a war on terror. We must stomp it out where ever it exists. If it takes a hundred years, if we have to kill every person in the world, we must stay the course. We'll start by killing all the poor. It dosen't matter from which country. It's always the poor that die first. Then we can go through the middle class as they continue to wave the flags of their respective countries. Then the slightly rich, then all but the very richest, and finally when the last of the resourses are finally depleated, the last 2 most richest can fight to the death for the last can of beans or the last gallon of drinking water. Then and only then will terrorism be eradicated.
topdown,
Thank goodness for humor because how else could we make sense of the apparent insanity of inhumanity that seems to prevail (or at least it has for the last 5000 years or so since "domination" has been the paradigm).
I say lets turn the pyramid upside down. Those few at the bottom would need to support those above and we could end the foolish pursuit of always trying to get to the top (when the pyramid is flipped most would be near the top anyhow).
Peace,
Ken

A World gone silly, not the kind of silly that makes me laugh though.
Talk, talk, blog, blog, blog - Unless people stop complaining and act, nothing will change. We already know the problems, we already know the issues, and we know what must be done. The time has come. We cannot wait until September any more than we can wait until 2008. If people are as fed up as endless blogs, letters, and polls suggest, they should be willing to confront the government directly, on its own doorstep.
WAR PICTURES
Pictures of Destruction and Civilian Victims of the Anglo-American Aggression in Iraq
These photos are only of a very tiny fraction of the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi Civilian Victims who have been terrorised, humiliated, injured, maimed and killed through British and American bombing of civilian areas in
various cities of Iraq. Due to insecurity, independent reporters could not and still can not reach many areas to photograph and report the atrocities. Several independent reporters and journalists were deliberately bombed to prevent them reporting the atrocities.

PLEASE NOTE THAT SOME OF THESE PICTURES ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR SMALL CHILDREN AND THOSE WITH WEAK HEARTS.

What will it take? What will it take?
What it will take to get us out of Iraq, is an iron-clad hold over their oil resources.
That's why we went in there in the first place, and why we won't leave till its ours.
Every US war is about resources, from Viet Nam to the Spanish American war. We want what they've got and will fake any reason we can to get in there.
I agree with Evelyn. We have no plans to leave, never did.
John McCain said:
"We have had troops in South Korea for 60 years and nobody minds...If you stay a long, long time, but have the Iraqis doing the fighting, and your people are back in the bases and away from the firing line, I think Americans would be satisfied."
Yeah sure we dont mind. The Koreans and the Iraqis on the other hand...
The corrupt corporate run government of the USA needs to leave Iraq, they should not build worthless missile installations in Europe and should withdraw from any number of military bases around the world. Never happen.
I love that the President of Ecuador said he will renew the lease for a US base when his country can open one in Miami. I hope he has eyes in the back of his head...
DCNative - you are intense, and I agree.
That is why, in my humble opinion,
We so need to
IMPEACH the
VP.

Dear Friends:
We MUST make our opposition known to our officials and EACH OTHER! The officials couldn't care less--they're already in office. We need to CONNECT with and RECOGNIZE each other.
My simple suggestions: 1)fly the American flag upside-down (I have 3 on my car and one on my briefcase); meet on your local county courthouse grounds on Sundays from 2-3 pm (no bullhorns, banners, confrontations, etc) Simply show up and have a picnic, meet others of like mind, display your flag appropriately (upside-down) and wear t-shirts, hats, pins, etc that reflect your sentiments. Nothing threatening about that even to a paranoid government.
But we MUST find some way of gathering our numbers and strength in a non-threatening way--until.....?
My name for us is "Spiritual Warriors" and my slogan is "Rise and Unify". We MUST rise above our petty bickering and DO SOMETHING!
I've noticed that no one includes their personal email address to be contacted for further co-ordination and mutual support. Well....I WILL! As a Senior Master of the Martial Arts, I know that only through total committment without fear can we hope to deal with a bigger, stronger opponent.Who will join me? Fly your flags, go to your courthouse, remember WE are the majority!
