Experts Cast Doubt on Credibility of JFK Terror Plot
An alleged plot to blow up fuel tanks and pipelines at New York's JFK airport had little chance of success, according to safety experts, who have questioned whether the plot ever posed a real threat.
US authorities said Saturday they had averted an attack that could have resulted in "unfathomable damage, deaths, and destruction," and charged four alleged Islamic radicals with conspiracy to cause an explosion at the airport.
But according to the experts, it would have been next to impossible to cause an explosion in the jet fuel tanks and pipeline. Furthermore, the plotters seem to have lacked the explosives and financial backing to carry out the attack.
John Goglia, a former member of National Transportation Safety Board, said that if the plot had ever been carried out, it would likely have sparked a fire but little else, and certainly not the mass carnage authorities described.
"You could definitely reach the tank, definitely start the fire, but to get the kind of explosion that they were thinking that they were going to get... this is virtually impossible to do," he told AFP.
The fuel pipelines around the airport would similarly burn, rather than explode, because they are a full of fuel and unable to mix with enough oxygen.
"We had a number of fires in the US. All that happens is a big fire," he said. "It won't blow up, it will only burn."
Even if the attackers had managed to blow up a fuel tank, the impact would be limited, he said, citing the example of North Vietnamese forces attacking US fuel dumps during the Vietnam war.
"They hit the fuel tanks with pretty big rockets. You would get a big fire but not a big explosion other than the rocket."
"There is a difference between just exploding the tank and a huge explosion. The tank may explode and blow up some metal, but that certainly wouldn't go very far," he said.
His comments contrasted with those of US Attorney Roslynn Mauskopf, who insisted at the weekend that "the devastation that would be caused had this plot succeeded is just unthinkable."
Jake Magish, an engineer with Supersafe Tank Systems, also cast doubt on the credibility of the plot, saying: "The fantasy that I've heard about the people saying 'they will blow the tank and destroy the airport,' is nonsense."
"There are people there responding to hysteria, I think. But from an engineering point of view, if someone is successful in blowing a hole into a tank, they will just have a fire from one tank.
"There is no way for the fire to go from tank to tank, that is nonsense. It just won't happen."
Besides the alleged plotters' capability, other questions have focused on the main source in the probe -- a convicted drug dealer who infiltrated the group and whose sentence was pending as part of his cooperation with police.
Neal Sonnett, a former federal prosecutor, told the New York Times there was also a danger in overstating how serious or sophisticated a plot really was.
"There unfortunately has been a tendency to shout too loudly about such cases," he said. "To the extent that you over-hype a case, you create fear and paranoia," he said.
The New York Times on Sunday pointedly avoided giving much coverage to the alleged plot, devoting only a brief on its front page continued on the local section, despite the story breaking in the early afternoon on Saturday.

Show AllIf the government does nothing, then they are part of a conspiracy such as some claim about 9/11. If they come out with foiling plots, then the plots aren't valid such as in this story.
How many "experts" would have said that 9/11 had any credibility up until 10 September, 2001?
It is nice to live in a world where the government is always wrong no matter what they do.
Be very very skeptical of a junta that went to war on a pack of lies and continues to flaunt human rights in Guantanamo and elsewhere around the word.
Yes, folks, but your common ordinary American is shaking in his/her shoes over this kind of new story. They're not going to think it through because the poor souls have so little left to think with! It's just 'Oh, they are trying to destroy us!' Or
'Thank God President Bush saved us!' Americans can't even back track fifty years and find out how involved we have been in overthrowing Democratic regimes world wide if they didn't agree with OUR agenda. To do so and be vocal about it would be called a member of the 'Blame America' crowd and that Floating Fat Man, Rush Limbaugh, would have material for six more months of programming.
Truth is an outmoded concept in America, folks. Truth would put the fear where it squarely belongs...in the White House! That is where the fear truly radiates from.
And, what do terrorist use to manipulate their victims? FEAR!
This administration apparently watches too much "24"!
Mauskopf means mousehead in German. It somehow seems rather appropriate in this case.
where's the nearest cliff? i need to run over the nearest cliff! moooo
conscience, at the time of the 1993 WTC bombing, Clinton was already president.
But how do you like the US Attorney Roslynn Mauskopf, who said the "devastation" would have been "unthinkable"? Case in point of why the Administration wants its prosecutors to be "loyal Bushies."
Isn't this administration trying to terrorize people by keeping these supposed terror acts every few weeks on the front burner? To me, this is the very definition of a terrorist. Trying to keep people afraid and frightened is indeed acts of terrorizing.
Now that Bush has decreed an Executive Order that frees him to take charge of all forces in the U.S. which is really a police state, we can expect some more terror tactics which will lead up to some major catastrophe. Then Bush will stay in power much like a Castro. We may never get rid of this bozo in our or his lifetime.
The only terrorist plot that really scared me was the one that put Bu$h the inferior in the presidency.
"FBI Informer enhanced terror now with new MI6."
do pfa Didn't say anything about 9/11, he just held up the slaughter in Iraq as one of the many reasons why many people hate the U.S. And Iraq does link to Saudis today in that Saudis are among the nationalities of people supporting and taking part in the carnage in Iraq. Iraq links further in that it is simply an Arab country, it is the vicinity of Saudi Arabia, and thus, there is plenty of identification among Saudis with what is happening in their corner of their world that could have long term, unwelcome consequences for their own country and their neighbors and relatives in other countries in the region.
Like Bush once said, in an uncharacteristic moment of honesty, intended or not, he's a uniter, not a divider. . . . Which is why his dreams of dividing and conquering are backfiring everywhere he turns.

do pfa. What has 911 to do with Iraq? Even Bush has said that Saddam Hussan had nothing to do with 911.
How can anyone avenge 911 on the Iraqis? most of the perpertrators were Saudi Arabians and this linking with Iraq with 911 seems to be a common mistake.
The gremlins are back! Gremlins are responsible for 9/11. Pass it on.

"Despite all the ominous warnings of wily terrorists and imminent attacks, there has been neither a successful strike nor a close call in the United States since 9/11. The reasonable -- but rarely heard -- explanation is that there are no terrorists within the United States, and few have the means or the inclination to strike from abroad..."

Includes link to MP3 audio of Mueller's interview with Scott Horton of Antiwar Radio. Top notch.
In 1950 or 51, there was a massive oil refinery fire near the Newark, NJ airport. Several huge fuel storage tanks tanks exploded during the day long fire; the tank tops soared up hundreds of feet into the air. My family and I, along with thousands of other people watched it happpening from a distance of about three miles. We could feel the heat from the fires, but there was no massive destruction outside the confines of the refinery, in fact no damage at all except for the refinery that we ever heard of. It was an impressive sight for a young boy though.
Safery changes were made at refineries and fuel depots after that to prevent one tank fire from involving the next tank.
This terrorist plot is a little corny, but there is no doubt in my mind, there still are terrorists in the United States who would love to harm us. Look what our nut case fellow American, Timothy McVey accomplished in Oklahoma City with a homemade truck bomb.
This goverment has killed and wounded nearly one million Iraq's and u s personel
combined,so watch for a real bombing to support their cause.
Although all of us may see through the ruse, the same can't be said for a large segment of the population. Unfortunately, for every intelligent and informed citizen, there are others who are not so intelligent, who are poorly informed and/or gullible.
Democracy works in theory; however, it sure isn't working in practice, at least in the US. As we are finding, it is easier to undermine a democracy than to make it work. If we can't fix it soon, we may we may need throw it on the scrap heap of history as a failed experiment and and go back to the drawing board.
lets see, dem debate just the other night, out comes this bogus story. Repub debate tonight, who wants to bet one of those ass clowns will mention this as futher proof we are "taking care of business in the war OF terror"?
Keith had a great timeline last night on his show on MSNBC, showing the timing of the terror alerts to deflect media attention from either Bushcon F-ups, or good news for the dems, especially around the 04 convention time.
And the sheep go baaaaaahhhhhhddddd terrorists, baaaaaaaaahhhhhhhdddddd!
So many people hate the US for so many reasons, I'm rather shocked that nobody has attacked us in the last couple of years. One case in point - The United States has slaughtered nearly a million innocent Iraqis to avenge the deaths of 3,000 innocent Americans. Imagine that same ratio coming back at us! That would pretty much cover the entire US and all of its territories, wouldn't it? The "six hundred million, six hundred thousand eyes for six thousand eyes" equation will surely leave the whole world blind by 2010.
Our murderous leaders' actions are making us less safe by the day. They're every bit the terrorists they claim Islamic extremists are, and if the US is attacked again, that much more blood will be on their greedy, criminal hands.

Errr Umm ~ we cant wait for the evidence to come in the form of a mushroom cloud...... eRRR uMMM....
BTW where in thee blue fvk is OBL???
And what about Luis Posada, the Bin Laden of this hemisphere--who is still dancing in the streets of Miami.
In the news today, 10 members of the Hmong community in Calif were arrested for plotting to overthrow the communist Laos government. The word terrorist has not been used to describe any of these individuals, who were going to use explosives, etc.
Does anyone sense the hypocrisy here?
It took ABC News less than ten seconds to send my BS-detector into overload with their first Chicken Little Report on this "terrorist plot." Damn shame for them that it interrupted their ongoing psychotic freakout over the Tuberculosis Airways scare.
Great fun.

If the administration were TRULY serious about solving terrorism, forcing
Israel's administration into observing the 1967 boundaries with Palestine would be a good place to start....
Of course they are not..... since the only policy being observed is the continuing support of the military industrial media complex and Zionist objectives.....
Hence this ongoing propaganda war being waged against the American electorate; Joseph Goebbels the infamous Nazi Propagandist (1933-1945)
would have been truly proud of......

"A key figure in the alleged plot, however, is named in the indictment only as "the source." He is identified as a convicted drug trafficker who, in exchange for favorable consideration on a pending jail sentence as well as cash payments, agreed to infiltrate the supposed terrorist cell.
Much of the evidence contained in the indictment consists of recordings of conversations between "the source" and the defendants. What emerges clearly, however, is the leading role this "informant" played in the alleged plot. Defreitas is quoted as saying that they saw him as someone "sent by Allah" to lead them.
The indictment also refers to meetings and recorded conversations between both Defreitas and the source and individuals in Guyana, who are identified only as "Individuals A through F."
These six unnamed men are quoted proposing a wide range of terrorist activity, including smuggling "mujahideen from Asia into Guyana and then into the United States," blowing up US helicopters at the Guyanese airport and the plan to blow up the JFK fuel system. On this last proposal, these unnamed individuals also suggest the use of dynamite and chemical explosives and advise on how to obtain these materials. One of these individuals also proposes that the plotters seek the assistance of a Trinidadian Islamist group, Jamaat al Muslimeen. In the account of these conversations, Defreitas is not quoted as saying anything.
The obvious question is why these six unnamed "individuals" have not been charged. One likely explanation is that they too were, in one form or another, participants in an elaborate effort to ensnare a hapless and sometimes homeless retiree and others in a plot that was fundamentally staged by the US government for its own purposes...."
as in the fort dix case, the central role is an fbi informant....
Not only does this latest one look phoney but a long list of them -- including the bombings in England -- don't seem to hold up and naturally, 9/11 is highly suspicious, IMO, especially since we had the 1993 attack which also reeks as an unbelievable situation.
My guess is they were trying to do the WTC thing in '93, counting on Bush I being re-elected. When they were surprised with Clinton -- and he rejected the neo-con/PNAC memo -- maybe they went ahead anyway?
However, '93 and '01 looked like the same neo-con players.
What is most interesting to me is that at the same time the feds busted and publicized this case of mostly thought crimes, a real terrorist plot, backed by real weapons and a very real plan to use them in this country was reported but no one noticed because no one called them terrorists, which may have been because the intended targets were Mexicans or Mexican-Americans living in the U.S. (although they did have standing orders to kill any federal agents that came after them).
Check it out:
"Five members of a self-styled militia were denied bond Tuesday after a federal agent testified they planned a machine-gun attack on Mexicans, but a judge approved bond for a sixth man accused of having weapons and explosives components in his home.
. . .
"Authorities said agents during the raids last week recovered 130 homemade hand grenades, a grenade launcher, about 70 hand grenades rigged to be fired from a rifle, a machine gun, a short-barrel shotgun and 2,500 rounds of ammunition in the raids." [So far, that is.]
http://www.decaturdaily.com/decaturdaily/news/070502/militia.shtml
I guess if you think bad thoughts about businesses, government buildings, or affluent shoppers you are a terrorist, but if you organize and load up with explosives and firearms that you intend to use to kill and terrorize brown skinned people you are a "militia."
Maybe that will be the defense in the JFK case. They weren't thinking of terrorist acts, they were just seeking to protect the country from the dangerous Mexicans pouring into JFK. They were a militia. We should thank them and the paid convict who helped them realize their potential as brave patriots. . . .
SHEESH!
One has to be fairly dim to believe that two wars, the emptying of the US federal treasury, the first steps taken to nullify the US Constitution, the animus of most of the world toward this same country, the final demise of a free, objective, independent press, the dismantling of most federal and state administrative infrastructure (that hated bureaucracy) other than law enforcement and boosting of private business interests in the name of a war against terror are worth these paltry few "plots" that have been uncovered in defense of the "Homeland".
Here is something I posted last August with the Craig Murray blog(in the UK) in response to the affaire of the "Toothpaste Bombers". The equation just doesn't work: all of that equals less chance of terror here?
----------------------------------------------------------------
08/06
I feel a need to provide more insight into the US connection with a viewpoint of someone within in the United States. We have gone through a few outings of conspiracies similar to that of the "toothpaste bombers" in England. On Thursday, June 22nd of this year the FBI raided a warehouse in the Liberty City area of Miami, Florida and arrested 7 members of a quasi-Muslim group who were unknowingly plotting with an undercover agent to destroy the Sears Tower in Chicago, and local federal buildings in Florida. The Miami plotters may have come across as a rather ridiculous and bizarre lot, and a more composed judge of their acumen may have pointed out that they didn't even have the bus fare to get to Chicago, but their malicious intent still presented some danger to the general public. The same people contemplating packing back packs with explosives and detonating them on public transport would certainly be a serious danger. While the plotters in Great Britain were probably better supported and more enlightened in their contemplation and projection of violent activities against the public, my suspicion is that, without knowing the details of the conspiracy, their level of competence in its execution was fairly close to the "Miami 7". I even believed initially that given the news of the foiling of the plot was coming from Great Britain; there must have been a credible and eminent danger of terrorist activity. Here in the US I would have believed that is was just one more example of political hype and an administration grasping at straws. But with more information such as that contained in this "blog", the affair started to smell like a fish.
I believe now that the exposure of the plot was in fact politically motivated and that its timing was probably orchestrated in the US. It now seems to me that the plot could have been exposed a month earlier or a month later with the same effect on the state of US and British security. The opportune time was after the Lamont primary victory. I believe the Republican leadership understands the significance of the victory and the subsequent morphing of that whiney fraud, Joe Lieberman, into an Independent much more than the leadership of the Democratic leadership does. These events will just hasten the potential disintegration of the Democratic Party, having it playing out in the timeframe of the 2006 election year rather than 2008. If the Democrats don't start exhibiting one of the essential behaviors of a political party and expel members that do not support the core doctrine of that party, then the party will fall apart. It's been a long time since they have showed any sense of party discipline. With that dismemberment, the effective two party structure of US politics will change, which may be a good thing if it doesn't sooner result in the self destruction of the nation. I think that the Republicans understood it to be well worth their while to have the "toothpaste bombers" exposed at this time, enabling them again to amplify their terrorist dirge and direct its tenor against Lamont and the Democratic Party.
Even if you do see this plot as fearmongering nonsense, there is still the real fear that more people will be murdered in another false-flag op in the US.
Put fear into the people and have your way with them. It's a proven tactic. I was just waiting to hear something like this. I never take anything at face value anymore. I just listen and then wait for the details to start trickling in.
They would just love to have some real terrorist. We know who the real terrorists are, they are the people running our governnment.
And the cases they do take to court are the so called eco-terror ones--claiming that someone who burns down a wild horse slaughterhouse does so to attack the government and is the equivalent of al queda.
Uh huh.
But folks--Hillary tells us we are so much safer now on account of the war on terrorism.
Braggart propaganda. Or should I say Propagana, braggart style?
Much ballyhoo about nothing, lies, to "prove" that there "is" a "war on terrorism" and to "prove" that we are "not safe" without their (Nazi style) infringements on our liberty and freedom.
IMHO, anyway.
It was just so Wolf Blitzer could repeat it ad-nauseum during the last Democratic debates, to show how wrong the democrats were for being "soft" on the war on terror.
Most foiled "terrorist" plots turn out to be pathetic losers that were coaxed into it by an informant. They are busted and paraded before the cameras for propaganda purposes.
Most successful terrorist attacks are "false flag" operations. This has a long history. Check out "Operation Gladio" on Google Video for a good example.
Reminds me of the 2006 British "terrorists" who were supposedly planning on mixing peroxide-based TATP cocktails in aircraft lavatories. Word has it that all the "evidence" against them is inconclusive and coincidental. The trial, due to be held next year, will likely be thrown out.
In both of these cases, there is no hard evidence, no finger on the button, no hardware. What we have here is fear-mongering.
This was the first thing that came to my mind as its impossible to explode a fuel line. These dregs will grab onto anything that floats and a pliant fbi will provide all the fodder they need. Disgusting.
Just another phoney distraction. This time from Libby's sentencing hearing.
You can tell this administration is lying simply by looking at their mouths … if they're open they're lying. Every terror alert along with the spectacle of color codes has been nothing les than BS. That is of course after they let the terrorists attack us on a beautiful September day six years ago. That was after they ignored warnings of an attack planned by a determined bin Laden to attack in the United States – the seemingly only real warnings we received. So when I heard of the JFK Airport plot I set my new stopwatch to see how long it would take before we heard that this was a high school prank or some such trivial nonsense. ("If the plot had ever been carried out, it would likely have sparked a fire but little else, and certainly not the mass carnage authorities described") I just shut the stopwatch off, thank you very much.
The problem is one of these days it will be real again, we have Bozo the clown in charge, and he's busy blowing up balloons for his next photo-op. Some people have a phobia for clowns and I could see where Bush and his minions would put you off.
Every time this type of behavior happens it's a reminder to the people of what a tremendous mistake was made in enabling this Bush regime to come to power. To even let the elections be close enough to be stolen is a mark against the masses that make up the United States. But what's done is done and now as the chickens come home to roost what has been sown is what you shall reap. So unfortunate to have a man like Bush be a leader in such perilous times as the interesting times we now live in. To survive Bush's time in power will be something to tell your grandkids.
It was probably hoped to create fear. However, I wonder what's going on with any REAL plots if this is the best they can dig up to exploit.
This administration will do anything to keep fan fear in hopes of building its support and diverting attention from its disasterous blunders. This is probably as phoney as the "Florida terrorist cell" scam.
A government truly interested in fighting terrorism would deal with this threat (to whatever extent it might have been anything approaching a real threat) quietly, efficiently and without any fanfare. Only a government interested in terrorizing its own citizens and reaping rewards from that terrorism would make such a show and raise such publicity about it.
