Ignorance of Global Warming
If Rachel Carson were alive and writing 45 years after "Silent Spring," her new book would be "Stagnant Summer."Among her subjects would be NASA administrator Michael Griffin. His own top climate scientists reaffirmed in a study last month that "global temperature is nearing the level of dangerous climate effects." The study concluded that "little time remains to achieve the international cooperation needed to avoid widespread undesirable consequences."
This week, National Public Radio asked Griffin whether climate change was a problem mankind should "wrestle with."
Griffin responded as if one of NASA's deep-space probes had dropped him off on Pluto. "I have no doubt that a trend of global warming exists," he said. "I am not sure that it is fair to say that it is a problem we must wrestle with."
Digging his toes deeper into his mouth, Griffin said, "I guess I would ask which human beings -- where and when -- are to be accorded the privilege of deciding that this particular climate that we have right here today, right now, is the best climate for all other human beings. I think that's a rather arrogant position to take. . . . Nowhere in NASA's authorization . . . is there anything at all telling us that we should take actions to affect climate change. . . . NASA is not an agency chartered to, quote, 'Battle climate change.' "
Berrien Moore, director of the Institute for the Study of Earths, Oceans, and Space at the University of New Hampshire, said Griffin's comments were "bizarre," "baffling," and "mind-boggling."
"It is such a strong statement based on such a high level of ignorance," Berrien said yesterday in a phone interview. He has been a lead author in past reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. "It indicates he doesn't have any knowledge on the topic he's talking about. Even a cursory reading [of the research] would not support what he said."
Griffin came off as the newest bad cop to remind people where the Bush administration stands on global warming. Griffin said this on the same day that President Bush, with his popularity among Americans dropping to its depths among Europeans, said he wants to commune with the planet on climate change. But in advance of next week's G-8 summit, Bush has already rejected the call by Germany, Britain, and Japan to slash greenhouse gas emissions.
This is a modern version of what Carson, who would have been 100 years old this week, wrote about in 1962 when she woke up the world to the dangers of pesticides. "We are accustomed to look for the gross and immediate effect and to ignore all else," she wrote. "Unless this appears promptly and in such obvious form that it cannot be ignored, we deny the existence of hazard."
The day before Griffin denied the existence of hazard, I spent 90 minutes observing two mallard families at Mount Auburn Cemetery. One mother had four chicks. The other had 10. We take mallards for granted as our most common duck, with 7.3 million of them in the United States and Canada, according to the US Fish and Wildlife Service. But they did plummet from about 11 million birds to about 5 million between 1958 and 1965. The total number of ducks, 36 million today, was down to 25 million when Carson wrote "Silent Spring."
In noting the pesticide residues building up in some wildlife refuges, she wrote, "such poisoning of waters set aside for conservation purposes could have consequences felt by every western duck hunter and by everyone to whom the sight and sound of drifting ribbons of waterfowl across an evening sky are precious."
She would have warned us that climate change is the new poison. In his stagnation, Griffin last year oversaw the deletion of the words "to understand and protect our home planet" from NASA's mission statement. Now he is asking which human beings should accord themselves the privilege of fighting climate change. Carson would have asked right back from "Silent Spring":
"Who has made the decision that sets in motion these chains of poisonings, this ever-widening wave of death that spreads out, like ripples when a pebble is dropped into a still pond? . . . Who has decided -- who has the right to decide -- for the countless legions of people who were not consulted that the supreme value is a world without insects, even though it be also a sterile world ungraced by the curving wing of a bird in flight?"

Show AllIf Al Gore were president, he would have immediately fired NASA Administrator Michael Griffin and promoted James
Hansen to the job.
Mr. Gore, we need you in the White House !

We have come a long way from a silent spring. We are heading for a silent Earth, where only the insects will survive.
Global warming will cause mass extinctions and the end of human civilization.
Coal is the enemy of the human race. Bush, Griffin, and all those who protect the business of coal the enemies of the human race (not a metaphor). They must be stopped by all means of our disposal.
We are in the sixth age of extinction and climate change will exacerbate the extinction of 50% of all life in the next 100 years.
However, we'll still have cartoons on TV.
Rachel Carson, the forebearer of environmental awareness, would be 100 years old this week. This courageous lady researched and alerted the world to the dangers of pesticides and other environmental toxins--while dying of cancer (ie--Silent Spring, published in 1962). President Kennedy heeded her warnings, and implemented some measures to counteract these threats. even though her discoverys were then still disputed.
If she were alive and active today, her credibility would be attacked by this administration, who are now waging this contemptuouis war on science and the environment.

Rachel Carson came bearing many years of research and facts in her book Silent Spring.
It is not that all Rachel Carson's are dead.
It is Corporation paying It Ain't So flunkies can overcome any truth with well researched evidence that is put in front of the general public.
and The General public more times then not believes the It Ain't So'ers.
I read somewhere that Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring was read worldwide in many languages .but its total sales was way under a million copies.
Rush Limbbaugh first book sold how many even though today they are on every yard sale table.
There are paid by corporations scientists that publish everyday .
This guy at the EPA. How do you think he got that job?
Meanwhile we the General Public worry about buying the Newest TV. Computer or vehicle.
Plus what we use to call Liberals have turn into many little my way or the highway clubs.
ou know I get daily emails asking me to sign petitions for this or that Environmental matter. Most of these sites are happy with 10,000 signitures which get sent to local Congressman ,EPA or Whoever. Years ago people would march ,would ring phones of the hooks.
oh the counterbalance of these petitions are Corporate Lobbiests and now even Tax Exempt Organizations all knocking on whoevers door with much more then a few signitures.
As the Common people flip through a 125 channels of repeated programs.
Even if Griffen gets fired The Comman Person will say who is Griffen and change the channel.
One poster suppports Al Gore. The poster thinks Al Gore can save this country and world.
Well poster they Impeachhed Bill Clinton because of Monica.
Yet Bush has been caught lying everytime he opens his mouth.
Who will protect Al Gore when he tries to tell the Truth?
Nothing but a pipe dream.
Quick what is your favorite Toothpaste?
Now What Is Global warminng?
Wanna bet the vast majority only answers the Toothpaste question.
Do I have any Solutions?
My chances of getting anyone to listen to them are as President Bush bringing home the troops tomorrow.
Genamen: True about the paying for quasi-accurate content just to muddy the publishing world waters the way skillful defense attorneys work on the most pliable members of a jury to establish the faintest semblance of reasonable doubt when they know (as does everyone else) their client is guilty as shit. Here, as with the need for campaign finance reform, and a judiciary that actually saw itself as a wise negotiating board between the good of citizens and the rights of industries to make a profit, we see how money (the love of which IS the root of all evil) has corrupted all things necessary to a world that promises right to living for its members.
Progressives know that environmental stewardship grows the economy.
"I guess I would ask which human beings — where and when — are to be accorded the privilege of deciding that this particular climate that we have right here today, right now, is the best climate for all other human beings."
And which human beings - where and when - are to be accorded the privilege of deciding that some other human being has to watch his home disappear under the rising ocean, which human being has to suffer a drought that kills his livelihood (Take that, you Ozies), which human being has to die from the spread of new diseases (take that, you Southerners. Here comes dengue, malaria, and yellow fever.)

"Nature must, in the not too distant future, institute bankruptcy proceedings against industrial civilization." -- William Catton
But you don't have to be a part of this. Quit your job! Get rid of your car! Stop feeding the beast! Grow organic food! Practice Permaculture! Reduce your energy needs by 90%! Surround yourself with a supportive community! If you can't find like-minded folk where you are, move to where they are!
"Be the change you wish to see in the world." -- Ghandi
The antidote to fear is action. Making an apartment, or a city lot, or a city block, or five acres, or 640 acres into a sustainable paradise may not save the world on its own. But your karma will be clear, and just maybe, others will be inspired.
"Rest satisfied with doing well, and leave others to talk of you as they please." -- Pythagoras
You know what is right -- just do it, no matter the cost. (Consider the cost of everyone whining, "This is just too hard!") The small minds (like Griffin) of the world will always tell you why you can't do what you're doing. They are full of reasons why it won't work. Just do it! What's the worst if you should fail? To have on your tombstone, "Tried to save the world?" I'll take that over being a part of the problem!
"First, they ignore you. Then, they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win." -- Ghandi
So, the first thing to do is something so absurd that it cannot possibly be seen as threatening -- like quitting your job and thus refusing to pay taxes or support the economy, by living off the land, be that growing your own food, or dumpster-diving. Then you progressively stick it in their eye. Then, others join you -- but by doing this, you will be joining others who have gone before, so it isn't really all that scary.
"Permaculture is revolution disguised as organic gardening." -- Bill Mollison
Don't let negativity turn you negative. Will civilization as we know it end? Most likely, but you needn't dwell on that if you are not part of the problem. Will humanity go extinct? Possibly, but if you do what you can within that which you have influence, it's not your on your shoulders.
Negative attracts negative. Run to the light, not away from the dark!
:::: Jan Steinman, EcoReality http://www.EcoReality.org ::::
Jan, I live in a passive solar home built entirely from discarded materials, plus seven acres of self-sufficiency from down firewood and vegetables, drive a 2001 Prius about once a month, and basically consume 90% less carbon than I did 20 years ago. It is fun and easy to live a voluntary simple life.
Coal is destroying my World and the protectors of coal are morally corrupt. Give Griffin and his ilk no safe harbor.
Adel, my apologies for preaching to the choir! Keep up the good work!
A friend of mine has a "one trip a day" campaign going on our wee island. I told her, "Y'mean I have to increase my driving by a factor of seven?" :-)
But I still believe "right path" is way more effective than "fighting." It worries me when people say something or someone "must be stopped by all means of our disposal." Similar arguments led to torture at Guantanamo Bay and Abu Gharaib. If you adopt the tools and techniques of your enemy, how far have you come?
That's not to say you shouldn't keep your rear-view mirror polished, or that you shouldn't fire off an occasional angry letter. But if you focus on the negative, you will become negative. And that's no place from which to do good.
Time to face the facts, fellow citizens: the environmental "movement" has seen thirty years of intense struggle tossed away like a cigarette butt on the road. There has been a mountain of "facts" and "truth" out there for decades - if enlightenment hasn't happened by now, maybe it's time to accept it never will. Evolution has become a theory again, remember? Gay marriage is destroying civilization, remember?
And we're still trying to convince people the Earth is melting? Our time would be better spent prepping for the future we know is rushing towards us no matter what we do today. Survival training is key, especially for the next generation. From power creation to water purification, basic medical care to life without 24/7 entertainment.
Let's all take a deep breath. We can figure this out...
According to scientists who are considered trustworthy by the environmentalist folks, the earth has warmed 0.7 degrees f in the past 100 years (less than 1 degree in 100 years). I think all have accepted that number. So let's accept it. (Even though I have never seen a statistic published without a margin of error???)
To determine the cause, my first question would be- how much have the other uninhabited planets warmed? Well.. it turns out that they have warmed also. Hmmm..Perhaps we should slowdown&think.
PS....
I have noticed that the phrase "global warming" is being phased out and replaced by "climate change". Why?
Not being argumentative here...jusy asking.
Is it because it is difficult to defend the global warming theory on those occaisionl cold days in June?
Is it easier to sell "Climate Change" to the masses because the claimate has wild swings from time to time? Ever heard this saying: "If you don't like the weather in________ ..(fill in the city of your choice. I've heard it in a dozen or so).. then stick around because it will change tomorrow!"
So "Climate Change" hysteria might be an easier sell. Slowdown&think
Jan Steinman, excellent points and strategy. The breakaway reminds me of Richard Bach's allegory in ILLUSIONS where one creature lets go of clinging to the rocks at the stream's bottom. By releasing himself to the current, he learns he will be carried. This is a metaphor that our TRUE needs get met, and that as we release our attachment to the mainstream culture with its over emphasis on materialism, we learn more refreshing and liberating ways to live. I, too, have taken up this process, although I must admit, I have to LEARN to garden and grow my own food. I am ready to begin that process...
I think it is time that humans as a species die. Too harsh you say? Well after seeing the continued support of the Republican party, that people like Newt Gingrich and Condi Rice are considered "serious" presidential candidate material, after seeing how half of Americans are torn over whether we should support our MURDEROUS troops in Iraq, how the number 655,000+ Iraqi civilians dead since we started this bullshot war on 'terror" which is only a cover for the military corporations to make billions, I have concluded we deserve to go out and Mother Earth will do it ike the vermin we are.
Right . . . notice that even Gore is using the term "climate change."
Stick with Global Warming -- it's the original term and it keeps the HEAT in the issue.
"Climate Change" IMO is intended to confuse those who aren't familiar with the subject in sounding more like something normal happening.
""I guess I would ask which human beings — where and when — are to be accorded the privilege of deciding that this particular climate that we have right here today, right now, is the best climate for all other human beings."
What cynical manipulation! A representative of the imperialists attempting to accuse global warming activists of northern-imperialism.
Yeah, sure, like the billion-plus poor people living in hellishly hot, areas like India, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, ,Somalia, Sudan, Chad or Mauritania, to name just a few places, are clamoring for more heat! less rain! more heat! less rain!
Griffin is just echoing Bush's agenda for NASA; Bush has killed all Earth exploration within NASA, instead mandating NASA with an "outer space" agenda designed to give Bush some sort of "hero" legacy status.
The only legacy I want to see from Bush is his "Wanted: Dead or Alive" poster hanging in every US Post Office.
slowdownthink:
Are you feeding yourself from the fat & gristle on Fred Thompson's turkeyneck? Here's his very compelling soundbite on climate change, which is very much akin to your own:
"Some people think that our planet is suffering from a fever. … NASA says the Martian South Pole's 'ice cap' has been shrinking for three summers in a row. Maybe Mars got its fever from earth. If so, I guess Jupiter's caught the same cold, because it's warming up too, like Pluto. This has led some people, not necessarily scientists, to wonder if Mars and Jupiter, nonsignatories to the Kyoto Treaty, are actually inhabited by alien SUV-driving industrialists who run their airconditioning at 60 degrees and refuse to recycle."
Smug and stupid only works with the good ole boys.
Rachel Carson would never have been so arrogant to call 'climate change' "the new poison". Climates have always changed naturally. Recent global average temperatures have not even licked the ceiling of its normal variation range.
The last 3 interglacials it was warmer than it has been during this interglacial, NATURALLY.
Note the 7 different time scales in the graph linked below. Maybe you'll wake up and stop being so self-important: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:All_palaeotemps.png
