Coffin Delays Clinton Fundraiser
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A protester using a flag-drapped coffin as a prop has put a local fundraising event for Sen. Hillary Clinton way behind schedule.
More than 120 people have been kept at bay waiting to enter a $500 to $4,600-per person campaign fundraiser at the home of real estate developer Eleni Tsakopoulos-Kounalakis.
Anti-war activist Stephen Pearcy, made famous last year when he hung a human-shaped form dressed in a military uniform from his Sacramento home, brought a coffin to the event as a means of expressing his displeasure with Clinton's stance on the Iraq war.
"Hillary is not welcome in Sacramento as a candidate," he said. "If you fund the war, you're keeping the troops in harm's way. She can't have it both ways."
As the Secret Service arrived on the scene, they apparently asked Pearcy to look inside the coffin. However, Pearcy refused to let them do so, saying they had no probable cause for opening the casket.
At that time, the Secret Service called in local law enforcement officials and requested a bomb inspection. Pearcy opened the coffin at that time, but local officials said that was not sufficient and proceeded with the inspection for a bomb.
Consequently, hordes of protesters, guests and media have been kept standing 300 feet from the entrance to Goethe Park on Rod Beaudry Way.
The event was scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
Finally, around 8:30 p.m., Tsakopoulos-Kounalakis came out and ushered guests into her house using an alternate route through a neighbor's yard. She thanked guests for being patient and scolded protesters.
Clinton arrived at 8:40 p.m., nearly three hours after her scheduled arrival.

Show AllWay to go Sacramento! Keep up the good work.
Awesome!
Damn, what a gutsy thing to do. I would be interested in a follow-up to know if there were any charges or fines levied.
This has the germ of a comedy worthy of John Belushi,Don Knots,(secret agent men) John Denver (as the coffin bearing protester), George Burns (as God who told him to do it in the first place), Heather Locklear,(as All-American Hillary)and Zsa Zsa Gabor (as the wealthy continental type political dabbler).
The climactic scene comes as Hillary nearly taps a hole in the concrete with her foot angrily waiting for Belushi and Knotts to either disarm the coffin or for Belushi and Knotts to find find some reason for locking up John Denver for this affront against all elitist dignity.
Heather is molified as Zsa Zsa shows her a secret path through the neighbor's back yard with no more harm than a few snags in her hose and a few insects attracted by her perfume and deoderant. Knots and Belushi let Denver go after warning him that they too are on a "mission from god". As the credits roll, Bob Dylan can be heard singing "Ballad of a Thin Man"
Hillary is "no" progressive that is for certain!
I'll bet Hillary let loose some of these foul mouth words that reveal what she really is, not the practiced "lady" image she presents to the public...

This ill-tempered, violent, foul mouthed, hateful and abusive woman wants to be your president and have total control as commander-in-chief of a military that her party so openly and proudly admit they detest. I can see someone like this gaining the respect of other nations, and especially from their leaders, who refuse to do as she tells them ...or else. No thanks, my country deserves a better leader, not a dominatrix!
I live near Sacramento, and the guy who makes these displays is probably doing more than anyone around here to bring attention to the atrocities of this war. I hope he keeps finding stunts like this to put Sacramento on the protest map. As the capital city of California this is what all of us should be doing everyday!
The protester's efforts are misplaced. Did he not get the memo that Hillary VOTED AGAINST THE BILL!!!
I am not exactly a Hillary supporter, but I can see that this protest is misplaced. The graphic displayed here on Commondreams promotes the false idea that Democrats have betrayed the troops. This is the opposite of what happened.
The real betrayer is Bush! (and his conservative cohorts). This article says it right:
http://www.rockridgeinstitute.org/research/lakoff/the-framers-got-it-right-congress-is-the-decider/
We need to stop undermining progressives who try to end the war by choosing our targets wisely. There are plenty of senators who voted FOR the bill. Let's ransack their parades and hold THEM accountable!
She may have voted against the most recent bill, but only out of political expediency, kind of like McCain sucking up to the Christian Right. She certainly didn't do so with any enthusiasm, nor has she EVER shown any leadership on the war.
The fact the she is considered the Democratic front runner shows that we are STILL not serious about electing real leaders in this country. And with every election cycle our margin for error gets that much smaller.
I agree with Bdrube. She would have voted for the funds if Obama had. She's as interested in ethics as a calculator.
Thank you Stephen for your bravery, fearlessness and dedication.
The only presidential candidate who is not afraid to boldly stand up and say-we need to get out of Iraq now,is John Edwards. Thank you John Edwards for your boldness as well.
Didn't Hillary and Obama wait until the rest of the Democrats voted, to make sure their votes didn't matter when the two voted against the war funding? Dennis Kucinich and John Edwards are the only Democrats I'd consider voting for, if I don't change to Green that is, which I most likely will do.
The only coffin I've seen in the media for a while now. I wonder if this picture got any coverage outside of progressive outlets?
Those selected quotes from Hillary cited above are crude and shocking. But, I think those phrases (or similar ones) would seem far less shocking attributed to a man. Let's not vote for Hillary for the right reasons, not because she can swear like a sailor. By all means, let's remember she voted to give W the authority to launch his war, and has equivocated about the correctness of this vote. She did not read the full report. I didn't either (of course no one ever gave me a copy), but I knew then the whole thing was a crock. And I knew that the "authority" to decide to go to war was really the starting gun.
We should keep in mind that the "quotes" Jess posted were mostly second-hand, and taken from books written by right-wingers who always hated the Clinton presidency and wanted to make her look bad; not by conscious progressives who were commenting on an unkind person.
The important thing to understand is that the Democrats set up the voting so that the bill would pass without the candidates having to vote for it. Duplicity is the name of the game.

"This ill-tempered, violent, foul mouthed, hateful and abusive woman..."
A bit over the top, but Hillary isn't my cup of tea either.
"...wants to be your president"
"Your" president? "Your"? Do you mean "my" president, as in my own personal president? Because, you know, if I were going to vote for my own personal president it would be a toss up between Aishwarya Rai or Morena Baccarin. But that's just me.
"and have total control as commander-in-chief..."
That would be a problem if there were currently a movement to concentrate more and more power in the executive branch. Luckily for us, there are no proponents of a "Unitary Executive" theory out there. Certainly there are none within the right-wing ranks.
"...of a military that her party so openly and proudly admit they detest."
I wouldn't be so quick to judge the Dems, my most excellent Jess. Given their devotion to the Israeli lobby, they might very well go and start a war with Iran and end up getting thousands of troops killed and tens of thousands more injured in a futile, mercenary conflict. By existing nationalistic standards, this would conclusively demonstrate their support for the troops and the military in general, and you would end up owing someone a big apology. Hell, imagine if they started a war with China and sent a half millions troops to their death. By existing standards, they would have demonstrated an almost impossibly high degree of love for the troops. Imagine the egg on your face then. The Republicans would have to get a million troops killed to top that level of support.
"I can see someone like this gaining the respect of other nations, and especially from their leaders, who refuse to do as she tells them …or else"
Boy, tell me about it. The last thing we need is a president strutting arrogantly around the world stage, strong-arming other nations, and generally pissing people off. Respect for our country and leadership is at an all-time high, and we sure as hell don't want to risk throwing that away. You are very wise to warn against this, JJ.
"No thanks, my country..."
Whoa, hold on a second, pardner. "My" country? That's a tad possessive isn't it? Unless...oh my gosh...unless this geographical entity is literally "your" country! Boy, are you ever going to be ticked off when you see the mess in one of "your" bathrooms. [I swear to God, it was that way when I got there. Honest.]
"deserves a better leader, not a dominatrix"
Well, that depends on who's playing the role. In the event that the leader in question is my own personal president, one need only read what I wrote above to conclude that I would find this outcome entirely agreeable.
Fucking cool idea. Frankly I don't care how Hillary expresses herself. She is simply a two faced, player for the wealthy, and doesn't give a crap how she achieves her power. I happen to be the founder of the Fuck You Club. We had our annual meeting last week end, where I was politely informed that I've turned into an aggressive progressive.
How Congress is Bought Off by Lobbyists:
It's no secret that legislators receive "contributions" from lobbyists, but a new, very powerful Web site, MAPLight.org, does something unprecedented: it correlates lawmakers' voting records with the money they've received from special-interest groups.
Good stunt. Next time Hillary plans to speak maybe protestors could make up several coffins, or something of the sort. Hillary flip-flops, and is a fake. She buys into anything and anyone only for power and money and would be a disgrace if elected as the first woman President.
In France the lady was crying and in the US the lady was cussing.
Hey Ming, if the repubs and dems are in the sack together, what difference does it make.
In the years to come, it will be harder to get organized against corruption in this country if we don't start now. Now its like trying to go to the hospital for help and all the doctors have TB or MRSA!
I hope those coffins follow her wherever she goes until she is driven from the race.
jungleboy,
Unfortunately it doesn't make a damn bit of difference; I'm with you on that one, of course. I was addressing the persistent and ridiculous attempt to link Hillary Clinton and the rest of the DLC types with the ideology and policy positions of the progressive movement. The right desperately wants Clinton et al to represent the far left end of the political spectrum, because that would greatly narrow such a spectrum to include only neoliberal economic positions, imperialistic military policies, and a move away from european-especially Scandinavian-social policies (despite the fradulent lip-service someone like Clinton pays them).
The Democratic leadership is "far-left" in the same way that an 11-5 NFL team is a "losing team". Sure, it's a losing team if one demands and only accepts 16-0 records. The Clintons, Liebermans, and Obamas could adopt virtually the entire military, social and economic platform of the right-wing and still they would be lambasted as wild-eyed, commie radicals if they retained some element of progressivist action. Hell, if every Democrat disappeared from the face of the earth, how long do you think it would take for the the far right to start stamping out the Chuck Hagels, the Ron Pauls or even the John McCains?
Watch out for that Coffin!!! Its a terr'ist weapon!
No wonder the regressive elements of both parties hide from the death toll of the thousands of troops and the HUNDREDS of thousands of Iraqi civilians!
If we Americans are going to pay for the war, we should be required to at least see some of the pictures...
WAR PICTURES
Pictures of Destruction and Civilian Victims of the Anglo-American Aggression in Iraq.
These photos are only of a very tiny fraction of the thousands of Iraqi Civilian Victims who have been terrorised, humiliated, injured, maimed
and killed through British and American bombing of civilian areas in various cities of Iraq.
Due to insecurity, independent reporters could
not and still can not reach many areas to photograph and report the atrocities. Several independent reporters and journalists were deliberately bombed to prevent them reporting the atrocities.

Jess,
Hillary was right about the 'right wing conspiracy' against her husband. Actually it wasn't so much against him personally as it was a way for them to take power...
And I laughed when you quoted her as saying she favored European social policy. I think most of us on this site would...
But I doubt most of the quotes of her swearing at Secret Service agents occurred. As others pointed out, they are quoted in books written by right wingers who belong to an anti-Hillary cult.
I won't vote for her b/c I think she has tried too hard to appear in the moderate political zone. I prefer the likes of Kucinich, Feingold and Gore... but I don't believe she is as 'foaming at the mouth' evil as the quotes you provided would mislead us to believe.
