Edwards Takes Political Gamble with Holiday Offensive
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Laura Belin plans to take her children to a Memorial Day parade Monday. There, at the urging of Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, she expects to join others protesting the war in Iraq.
"Everyone knows that we're going to have to start getting our troops out," said Belin, 38, who's from suburban Des Moines, Iowa. "And we need to start getting them out now."
Edwards has called on Americans to "honor the memory of the fallen by acting to end the war and bring (U.S. troops) home." The former North Carolina senator also is asking people to honor the troops with prayer or even a word of thanks.
But his appeal to speak out or attend holiday observances this weekend with signs saying "Support the Troops - End the War" has drawn protests of its own.
"Memorial Day has always been a day for honoring those who've given their lives for the country," said John Sommer, the executive director of the American Legion's Washington office. "It's just totally unbelievable that someone would want to politicize the day the way Senator Edwards has."
Edwards' holiday offensive is his latest surge against the war, and it's a political gamble.
This month he ran TV ads in Washington, D.C., and Iowa urging the Democratic-controlled Congress to defy President Bush's veto of a war-spending bill that set deadlines for a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq. He dismissed attempts to compromise as a "concession."
"He more and more seems to be running as this year's Howard Dean," said Dennis Goldford, a Drake University political scientist. Dean, a Democrat who ran for president in 2004, became the favorite of antiwar activists but failed to win his party's nomination.
There's little doubt that the war is unpopular. Polls show that two-thirds of Americans oppose it. A Des Moines Register poll this week found it the top concern among likely Democratic caucus-goers in a state that's key to Edwards' hopes of winning the nomination - and the first state where Democratic voters will begin selecting their candidate next January.
Even war supporters acknowledge the right to protest it. They just question Edwards' timing.
"There's 365 days in a year. I think it shows poor taste and poor judgment to choose a day that we set aside to honor the men and women who have made the supreme sacrifice," said Bob Dionne, the commander of an American Legion post in Manchester, N.H. "There's 364 other days he could choose."
On a blog, Edwards called Memorial Day "exactly the right time" to protest the war. Campaign manager David Bonior calls it "an important time to raise the consciousness of the country."
"(Veterans) fought to guarantee our freedom so people could actually express their views and raise their voices," said Bonior, an Air Force veteran and former Michigan congressman. "That doesn't mean we can't talk about the war and the necessity of bringing our troops home."
Tim Carpenter, the director of the group Progressive Democrats, said his group was encouraged to see Edwards speak out. So is Belin, Edwards' supporter from Iowa. She puts little stock in criticism from groups such as the American Legion.
"They don't own the holiday," she said. "There are plenty of people on all sides of the issue who have connections to people serving over there (in Iraq)."
But even some liberals question Edwards' timing.
Joe Conason, a columnist for Salon.com, wrote that many veterans have joined the ranks of war critics. Still, many of them "believe that antiwar displays on (Memorial Day) are at best insensitive, reviving bad memories of the Vietnam era," he wrote.
"If people are taking a look at an alternative point of view," he said, "why would you do something that repels them?"
Some see Edwards' move as another way to distinguish himself from his top rivals, Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois.
"Candidates all have a strong opinion against the war, and now they're trying to do something that establishes that they have credibility beyond what other candidates have," said Bill Carrick, a California-based Democratic strategist. "(Edwards) is obviously trying to assert that he has a stronger position against the war than they do."
That may prove essential in Iowa.
"The contest where he absolutely must do very well is Iowa, which is a close contest and where the Democratic Party is pretty left," Washington-based analyst Stuart Rothenberg said. "It's about Iowa, and the peace sentiment is strong out there."
It is with Belin.
"Right now," she said, "(Edwards) has the strongest position on the war."
Edwards led in Sunday's Des Moines Register poll, with 29 percent support to 23 percent for Obama and 21 percent for Clinton

Show AllPandering to patriotism and "support our militarism" is playing it safe to the point of cowardice. How can this be framed as a "Political Gamble"???
Antiwar displays on (Memorial Day) are at best insensitive, reviving bad memories of the Vietnam era
Let's revive all of the bad memories from the Vietnam era... maybe if we can start to remember how the Vietnam war was brought to an end, then we can start to bring an end to the war now... we can't allow this to be completely in the hands of spineless politicians... Maybe if some protestors get shot (i.e. Kent State) more people will become outraged and demand change... Armchair Protestors!
Memorial Day seems appropriate for an anti-war effort in Iraq, since the idea is to honor people who have died serving their country and truly defending the people, not for people dying as fodder for a war based on lies. Let us struggle to have fewer victims of such a senseless war as the one we are bogged down in! Fewer 'martyrs' to the propaganda machine.
I would think it would be insensitive to keep someone where they not only can be killed or maimed, or poisoned by all the DU, but can also have their psyche ripped apart by being forced to participate in wanton murder and robbery (the Great Oil Robbery). But what do I know?
I don't see how any progressive can fault Edwards for this. This is about as assertively anti-war as one can be in the current political environment without being deemed "completely irrelevant" and a "kook" by the corporate media. All progressives, including Kucinich, can go out there and make truly progressive statements, but we, including Kucinich, don't have a snowball's chance of ever getting the presidential nomination of a major political party.
QUOTE . . "Joe Conason, a columnist for Salon.com, wrote that many veterans have joined the ranks of war critics. Still, many of them "believe that antiwar displays on (Memorial Day) are at best insensitive, reviving bad memories of the Vietnam era," he wrote."
I too found this comment by journalist/author Conason highly humorous. Memorial Day should be about ENDING WAR and prevent war. Evidently, some Veterans groups have the idea that it's about idealizing war. NOOOOOOOOOOO.
I think Edwards has a terrific idea here -- and that we should all get out tomorrow and STOP ANY NOTION THAT WAR IS SOMETHING TO BE IDEALIZED, GLORIFIED. I THINK RON KOVIC'S 'BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY' ALSO MAKES THAT TREMDOUS STATEMENT AS HE BEGINS TO RECOGNIZE THE REALITY OF WHAT HE WAS PARTICIPATING IN AS HE TRIES TO SPEAK IN HIS HOME TOWN ON . . . . . ON MEMORIAL DAY -- !!!
IRAQ IS A PARALLEL TO VIETNAM . . . BOTH ILLEGAL WARS OF AGGRESSION AND IMPERIALISM ON THE PART OF AMERICA.
I'M AN AMERICAN AND AGGRESSIVE 'ILLEGAL' WARS ON OTHER NATIONS ARE NOT SOMETHING THAT I SEE AS PART OF THE IDEALS OF DEMOCRACY. THESE ARE THE IDEALS OF TREASON, OF IMPERIALISTS -- AND IF WE WANT IT STOPPED -- WE HAD BEST STOP IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
While Edwards makes enemies...
KUCINICH IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE!!!
KUCINICH '08!!!
Peace to you and yours.
If John Edwards really wants to stop the Iraq; War, he should be supporting impeachment and removal of the vice president first, and the W next to provide for real accountability from these gangster of neo con right, the way Dennis J Kucinich is already doing. Edwards talks the talk, but he doesn't walk the walk.
Echoing AD about supporting impeachment--to convince me Edwards is progressive on foreign policy he would need to repudiate his threat of preventative war on Iran. He made this threat when he said "all options are on the table." And he would need to commit to the rule of law in international affairs including the Geneva Conventions, the UN Charter, and the Nuremberg ideals. Kucinich is clear on these issues and is as progressive as the Green Party of the United States.
So lets take to the streets on Saturday. Tell these Dems that we don't appreciate them giving Bush another BLANK CHECK!!

"Antiwar displays on (Memorial Day) are at best insensitive, reviving bad memories of the Vietnam era"
Yes, don't let War get its feelings hurt, please.
I'm a peace activist because my father and brother are soldiers. On Memorial Day, I will do what I always do and work for peace on Earth. Sorry if I offend you.
It's all right to be pro-war 365 days a year, but not to be pro-peace for 365 days a year. What a bunch of bs.
No free ride for Bush and Cheney, not even for one day.
As I write my reprsentatives, "Stop turning our children into war criminals. Bring the troops home." That's the nicest way I can put it. I find anyone offended by that offensive.
Edwards is looking better. And at least he had the grace to say he was wrong and not try to excuse himself. He also comes from an impoverished background and know what it feels like. And he hasn't forgotten what it feels like. He's no Dennis Kucinich but I think Dennis is too evolved to get elected in this country. Not when people want to be charmed and seduced for their votes (as in the last three elections). And we need a fighter, for as Karl Rove gleefully said, "I love close elections".
Promoting Peace on Memorial Day to honor those who died for peace? What a novel idea. I'm in.
Edwards has guts. Gore has guts and vision. Hillary and Barack are middle of the road muddlers. Kucinich has no chance to even be nominated. Nader will just pull away essential votes. Get realistic folks. The only ones to represent our opinions and 70% of the country are John Edwards and Al Gore.
Edwards, at this moment has my vote. Perhaps, we could have Edwards as Prez and Kucinich as VP. If the people would act in their own best interests, they coulld both be elected to those posts. Then we have to get a clue and elect a Congress that will truly reflect our wishes. Any Dem who votes for this funding bill will never get my vote again.
It's time.
With the incumbent Democrats caving in to Bush and his demands for no benchmarks or accountability, the rest of the party has to take to the streets and protest. Why NOT on the holiday meant to honor those dead because of the politicians' wars!!!
I do not know ANYONE who supports giving this occupier of the White House more money for his wars. It's quite obvious that Bush wants all of this build-up of troops and more money so that he and Cheney can go on into Iran. Only our Congress, which bears the ultimate responsibility for giving Bush the go-ahead vote in the first place, seems to be impervious to the will of the people.
Impeachment is the ONLY way to prevent more wars and bloodshed. Put it back on the table, Nancy.
And by the way, where does each of the presidential candidates stand on impeachment?

I see absolutely no conflict between preaching peace on a day when we memorialize and salute those who have served and died in the military. My son was killed in Iraq and I have no doubt he would be preaching peace now. I've heard that those who have faced combat are the last to endorse it. As our country continues to move toward complete militarization we will find less and less opportunity to speak freely, as our constitution guarantees we may do. Better speak out now.
Jane Bright, I am so sorry you lost your son. I know I can't give you any comfort, but you have my heartfelt sympathy. Too many families are feeling what you and they should never have to feel, and not just here.
An Edwards/Kucinich ticket sounds good to me. It's a start to sanity. I can't believe I'm getting pragmatic. That's a 40 year first!
Honor the Dead, Heal the wounded, End the war now.
Edward/Obama'08
Check the American Legions bonafieds they have been for this war from the beginning.I'm a Viet Vet and I would not take their side in a dog fight.Tony
So I guess the VFW thinks that Bush's mantra " we can't back down in iraq because it would make irrelevant the lives of our men lost there" is OK for memorial day and the other 364 days?
This is just the spin of some Republican or even a Democratic think tank to confuse the voters about what is important. The Memorial day/$400 haircut deal.
Thanks John Edwards for speaking out on Memorial Day or any other day you want . Vietnam was a dirty war and this Iraq "adventure" is even more obscene. It has nothing to do with honor or protecting our country. It has everything to do with enriching the rich and empowering the imperialists. John Edwards speaks for me.
Count me in, too, Coyotita. What better day to choose than Memorial Day to memorialize those who have died in Iraq, Americans, Iraqis and everyone else? Bring the troops home and give the world - and the troops - a break, and an end to this asinine occupation.
My bad memories of Vietnam were the federal marshals who clubbed me after arresting me on the Mall of the Pentagon in October 1967, and the endless images of slaughter of Vietnamese peasants by US planes and bombs and troops, which lasted through my whole teenage years and into young adulthood.
I say let's revive the spirit of protest of that era, when we didn't give a rat's ass about being polite, and called the Establishment for what it was.
I don't remember once dialing the Capitol to lobby a Congressional office on war funding. We just marched on the Capitol, shut down streets and cheered when soldiers in uniform tossed their medals over White House fences.
Two cheers for John Edwards for calling for war protests on Memorial Day. I'd give him a third cheer if he'd also call for those protesters to add signs calling for the impeachment of the president.

Political gamble? It sounds like a lead pipe, sure thing to me.
John Edwards is right -- Memorial Day is the perfect time to speak out against this War of Choice in Iraq and to voice the message BRING THE TROOPS HOME.
Memorial Day commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service, beginning with Union soldiers who died in the American Civil War, later honoring future soldiers in future wars.
And for cripes sakes, if the Indianapolis 500 is accepted as a "proper" event held in conjunction with Memorial Day since 1911, then WHY NOT A "bring the troops home' message from a very viable presidential candidate?!
Our values are so f**ked up in this country.
Go, John Edwards!
"Right now," she said, "(Edwards) has the strongest position on the war."
....Wrong.....Dennis Kucinich holds that honor. He is also strongly against corporate involvement in campaigns, which is why I support him. No one else has the guts to make THAT stand. I would invite any who doesn't know what he stands for to check out:
http://kucinich.us/
It is way too early to write off a candidate because he doesn't poll well NOW. We need real leadership, as is clearly seen by the gutless funding of this genocidal war that is occurring.
definitely anti-war people should not be scared out of being anti-war.
there is always that attack on people who stand for what the establishment is against as being somehow improper.
so the rovetypes send the message that being anti-war and saying so on memorial day is a bigger trespass against decency than starting a horrific endless war based on lies.
How can we remember those who have come before if we forget those that need us now to bring them home!? Obviously voting doesn't amount to much these days, so we need to spell it out, that we are not letting our troops down; and maybe I live in a different America, but most people I see on Memorial Day are taking it pretty easy. I agree, there are 364 other days of the year to choose from, but Memorial Day is more about being active in support of our service men and women rather than watching floats go by and grilling with friends. Besides, if you're planning to honor them in some other way, there's room to do it all, even with potato salad and a ride on the boat!
Memorial Day is a perfect time to demand that if soldiers are going to sacrifice lives, limbs, and psyches, it should be for something this nation has decided upon as a nation.
It's also a perfect day to remember the sacrifices of the courageous Vietnam Vets who spearheaded the anti-war movement and, in the end, brought an end to that mad war. Don't remember that part? Check out SIR NO SIR, a doc about the GI anti-war movement, at netflix or your better video establishments: http://www.sirnosir.com/
My idea for Micheal Moore's next movie is an expose of the heinous treatment of vets under this administration. Titled "Support Our Troops" the poster is a legless uniformed Operation Iraqi Liberation (OIL) Vet, with the slogan "You Broke Them, You Bought Them"

Thank you John Edwards for honoring all veterans with your stand. I am the daughter of a WWII Flying Tiger pilot, killed in China in 1944.
Memorial Day is the perfect day to protest this insane war/occupation. Let's protest to honor those who have died in other wars, to show their spirits that this country is still worth fighting for...and let's do it to honor those still alive and fighting, to bring them home still alive, so we don't have to remember them on another Memorial Day. I'm with John Edwards on this.
Isn't it ironic how speaking out against the war on Memorial Day is considered politicizing a war that is political by its nature. Meanwhile, troops are being killed supposedly defending our freedoms, including freedom of speech!
I am the youngest brother of someone who was killed in the Vietnam War, and the youngest son of a Gold Star Mother who reads a poem every Memorial Day at the National Cemetery in honor of the mothers of fallen soldiers. I must tell you that this particular Memorial Day, I will not be able to stomach showing up and listening to the lies from the politicians about those "who gave their last full measure of devotion to defend our freedoms." Nor in the last thirty years have I been able to attend Christian churches that allege that Jesus died to save us from our sins. At one point recently, I even asked my Christian mother if she gave birth to my brother for him to die in the Vietnam War. She understood my point, that death is never the meaning of life. Period.
As for Edwards, what is termed a "political gamble" has won him at least two votes in the Primaries, notably mine and my mother's. Why? Because we see him as being more honest and less political than Obama or Clinton.
The draft still exists—- but has morphed into an economic one rather than a lottery.
the bulk of the soldiers come from the south, where there exists little job opportunity.
sooo few of the enlisted soldiers want to be put in harms way and on some levels (even if they're inactive conservatives)will support peeps wanting them out of dangerous situations.
I think Mr. Edwards is the only hopeful running for president with the Balls to do a protest against the so called war in Iraq. I am for bringing our troops, all home alive! Not in a bag ! This is the stupidest use of our brave military in history. Go for it Edwards, Your brave and I admire you for it.
TelToff,
Edwards is being more brave than most are giving him credit for. If he keeps on moving to the left, the Bush criminal gang might see to it that he ends up like Wellstone. There are no limits for these fiends.
Kucinich, on the other hand, is not perceived to be much of a threat, so he can say whatever he wants without any serious consequences.
I do not understand the position that protesting against war, and this war in particular, in any way denigrates the sacrifices of soldiers who died in other conflicts. Part of the observance of Memorial Day is to remember and honor those people who died in wars defending our country. Nothing could be more of a memorial than to do our damnedest to see to it that no more need to die, especially when they are dieing for the benefit of good ol' corporate Amerika and its shareholders. And before any of you "red-blooded Americans" get huffy, tell me with a straight face that EXXON, Halliburton, Lockheed, Boeing, Blackwater, and dozens of politically connected corporations that you never heard of aren't making out like bandits.
That leads me to another thought. Maybe the fastest way to get us out of this war is to levy a war profits tax of something around 75% on all profits made from contracts with the DOD or the DHS or from any weapons research or from any work in Iraq. If the profit were taken out of this war, then the people most responsible for pushing it would find something else to do with their time and we could bring the soldiers home before more get permanently damaged and killed. It would also require those who are benefiting from the war to pay some of the costs. Why should the soldiers be the only ones sacrificing for whatever the war is supposed to accomplish?
You have a point, kivals, I've thought of that too. I hope we're wrong, because we're already a dictatorship if we aren't. Since November 22, 1963, I've thought the reason no one asked obvious questions about the Kennedy assassination is because they didn't want to know the answer.
We can sit here and blog, we're nobodies and nobody is paying any attention to us. Dennis Kucinich is my hero but the press (except for the Cleveland Plain Dealer) doesn't even mention him. So for now he's safe. Edwards is sticking his neck out and I have to admire him for that. Edwards/Kucinich is my dream ticket, but I would never want to see them together in an airplane. What a sad commentary on our country.
RichM,
We cannot know what Edwards believes about the issues you raised, but I would bet you the house that Edwards does believe that if he made the points you think he should make that the corporate press (as well as many in his own party) would declare him an irrelevant nut, and, if a great many people started to listen to him, then he better have plenty of life insurance.
I wish more progressives would understand that the Democratic politicians in Washington are far from stupid and are not ill-informed, and they are not all evil fiends. They have to choose whether to tell it like it is and become irrelevant (or dead) or to play the game and try to do some good before they become totally corrupted.
I say Edwards is the best of the Democratic crowd, and the only one who would even consider bringing Dennis Kunicich in on his coattails. He also grew up poor and hasn't forgotten what it's like, unlike some others I could mention. He and Dennis Kucinich like each other, and had agreed at the 2004 convention to each give their delegates to whoever got the most votes. The outcome was a given, but it was an agreement. I think it's the most practical ticket we could have.
I am positive that Edwards would be the least disappointing Democratic candidate for President of the front running crowd, including and especially Gore. In 2004 I thought that if it had been an Edwards/Gore ticket instead of the reverse, we would have had a different outcome. He's better liked, and he's more of a fighter. Gore chokes under pressure and the public won't trust him.
Gee, Memorial Day should be spent floating around in pools, getting suntans, barbecuing and watching colorful parades. Why should we be thinking about wars and those who died in them? It's such a downer. Let's guzzle gas in our SUVs while running over wildlife on our way to the shore and forget about the making the sacrifices necessary to keep this country a democracy. NOT. Go for it, Edwards!
