Study: Global Net Censorship 'Growing'
The level of state-led censorship of the net is growing around the world, a study of so-called internet filtering by the Open Net Initiative suggests.
The study of thousands of websites across 120 Internet Service Providers found 25 of 41 countries surveyed showed evidence of content filtering.
Websites and services such as Skype and Google Maps were blocked, it said.
Such "state-mandated net filtering" was only being carried out in "a couple" of states in 2002, one researcher said.
"In five years we have gone from a couple of states doing state-mandated net filtering to 25," said John Palfrey, at Harvard Law School.
Mr Palfrey, executive director of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society, added: "There has also been an increase in the scale, scope and sophistication of internet filtering."
ONI is made up of research groups at the universities of Toronto, Harvard Law School, Oxford and Cambridge.
It chose 41 countries for the survey in which testing could be done safely and where there was "the most to learn about government online surveillance".
A number of states in Europe and the US were not tested because the private sector rather than the government tends to carry out filtering, it said.
Countries which carry out the broadest range of filtering included Burma, Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen, the study said.
The filtering had three primary rationales, according to the report: politics and power, security concerns and social norms.
The report said: "In a growing number of states around the world, internet filtering has huge implications for how connected citizens will be to the events unfolding around them, to their own cultures, and to other cultures and shared knowledge around the world."
Jonathan Zittrain, Professor of Internet Governance and Regulation at Oxford University, said the organization was also looking at the tools people used to circumvent filtering.
"It's hard to quantify how many people are doing this. As we go forward each year we want to see if some of these circumvention technologies become more like appliances and you just plug them in and they work," he added.
"Few states restrict their activities to one type of content," said Rafal Rohozinski, Research Fellow of the Cambridge Security Program.
He added: "Once filtering is begun, it is applied to a broad range of content and can be used for expanding government control of cyberspace. It has become a strategic forum of competition between states, as well as between citizens and states."
Mr Palfrey said the report was an attempt to shine a spotlight on filtering to make it more transparent.
"What's regrettable about net filtering is that almost always this is happening in the shadows. There's no place you can get an answer as a citizen from your state about how they are filtering and what is being filtered."
The survey found evidence of filtering in the following countries:
Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Burma/Myanmar, China, Ethiopia, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, UAE, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Yemen.

Show AllGoogle, Yahoo..and others..began these tests..regarding the possibility to efficiently censor the Web..with China..the Google/china deal was essentially orchestrated to study this possibility, IT IS COMING HERE!
To ANY AND ALL TECHNICALLY PROFFICIENT INDIVIDUALS:
WHERE ARE THE CITIZENS COUNTER MEASURES? THIS WOULD BE A HUGE BUSINESS. WHY ARE THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE NOT PART OF THE CORPORATE FASCIST THEOCRACY, BUT WHO DO HAVE M.I.T. DEGREES...NOT USING YOUR SKILLS TO HELP YOUR FELLOW "LIBERALS" TO THWART THE ATTEMPTS AT SURVEILLANCE, EAVESDROPPING, CENSORSHIP..ET AL????? PLEASE, DEVELOP THE COUNTER MEASURES THAT WE NEED..PLEASE..
There is NOTHING , Repeat, NOTHING that scares the governments of the world more than a united populace. It's the standard neocon trip, and it's not new at all. In fact, it's as old as the first dictator that destroyed a printing press. It's just that now, there is an actual method for people TO find out about their country, their world, and what is going on in it. Things like Skype make it really easy to contact people in other countries for nothing. No wonder the authoritarians want to control it.
And once Google kissed the Butts of the Chinese gov't, it was all over. Now ANY tin horn third world dictator can make the same demands, and will get them. Notice what the US Military is doing with our soldiers and youtube, etc. It's all about FEAR, misinformation, or even better yet, NO information.
If this is the information age, then it's pretty clear that they intend to keep everyone in a VERY subservient and downtrodden condition. It's like a second class citizenship of information. Look at it like money. Their whole goal is to keep YOU from having any. As a result, when Reagan came into office, we lost a decade's worth of pay increases overnight. And we've already seen efforts in our own congress to limit our ability to use the internet to it's fullest. Watch out for more.
They will continue to try and keep information away from us as well, and as far as the MSM is concerned, they have done a stellar job. For instance, did you know that the president is an actual convicted felon, and that since he has been in office? You certainly didn't hear about the trial or the judge's decision of two years ago that found W guilty of breaking the law when wiretapping us without warrants. But it happened, and it's on the books. WHY isn't he in jail yet? You or I would be.
It's a real shame that the rest of the world has to live with these "know more than you do" types as well. And it's the internet that could help us rid ourselves of them and THEY KNOW IT. That little machine in the corner of your office is the single most dangerous thing that you could own, and they know that, too.
I remember when you could not post any responses on Common Dreams .They have improved vastly and for you who want to circumvent the filters go to the kids they really have it figured out.
See, even us paranoids have REAL fears . . . and these are big ones.
FAUX News will go on just like nothing happened!
Are we preaching to the Choir?
I'm shocked this happening,ya right nothing shocks me anymore. We are becoming one of the most controlled country's in the world and most of us don't seem to notice. But then again most of us don't seem to care anyway,as long as we have a tv,car, gas,a place to lay our head and money to eat at mcdonalds.Till all that goes away it will stay that way, then it will be to late.PEASE AND GET OUT OF IRAQ
Censorship is "old news" in most Arab states. I worked in Saudi Arabia in the mid-80s for three years. All newspapers, magazines and videos are censored. I subscribed to a dive mag. and they used magic markers to blot out women in bathing-suits-wouldnt mind if it had not bled through and ruined the articles on the other side. All women with exposed bodies of any sort, pigs, crosses, star of Davids, anti-Arab or pro-Israel things are magic-marker removed. Millions of newspapers from all over the world are censored everyday by the Saudis. Cans of soup will have pork recipes marked out. I was watching a video tape of the muppets and all went well until the first shot of miss piggy-rest of the tape was erased. So it would be out of character for them not to filter the internet.
A Saudi friend explained it to me: there are just certain things we should not know.
How depressing.....

Subject: Censored Researcher Moves Forward With Exhibit

PRESS RELEASE
by Bill Cutler
May 20th 2007 will be a watershed event in planetary science research for Independent Research Scientists. On that day S. Ray DeRusse of BCC Meteorites will open with an exhibit at The Butler's Antiques and Uniques with a meteorite and extra-terrestrial sample display. You may be wondering what business such an exhibit has at an antiques establishment? Well, it turns out the Butler's Jim and Gayle Pettit are heavy hitters in the antiques and antiquities business, with extensive experience, have a larger than 7000 SF facility and support science, education, and expression free from the shackles of restraining government interference. The likes of which have plagued the human contribution to global warming advocates, which have been stifled and restrained by the Bush Administration and his appointees.
In fact, BCC Meteorites and The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History worked out a deal over many months to host the exhibit in their Planetarium Lobby. However, the Museum buckled under pressure and scrapped the exhibit in favor of incubating political interference by establishment scientists from among others, Texas Christian University. This type of political interference has been in part retaliation for Mr. DeRusse's whistle blowing and for exposing scientific misconduct in intramural and extramural research by the same government funded actors who have worked diligently behind the scenes to make sure his work does not receive funding or a platform. At the exhibit, Mr. DeRusse will be highlighting many of his science related findings and discoveries.
Among them, he found, examined, and classified the largest lunar meteorite having an origin from the lunar highlands.
Mr. DeRusse examined and discovered that scientists had misidentified the first lunar meteorite from Canada found by Dr. Nininger during 1963-1965 which pre-dated the Apollo Mission.

The robotic 'Opportunity' and 'Spirit' missions to Mars yielded new and important information about Mars. Mission scientists issued a press release saying one of the robots had examined a meteorite, "not of martian origin" . They issued this press statement only after visiting BCC Meteorites' web site. Mr. DeRusse had this information on his web site almost four months before mission scientists issued this press release.
Mr. DeRusse after 4 years is still Google ranked the leader in stellar grain-cometary grain research based on both data and rankings, and by doing a search for stellar grains in any search engine.
For those interested in planetary science, the machinations of government funded censorship and great work by Independent Researchers, the exhibit will be from May 20 through June 20 at, The Butler's Antiques and Uniques, 2221 8th Avenue, Fort Worth, TX 76110.

The "New American Century" dictated by the "New World Order" cannot do so without effective control over the Internet. So, without significant popular resistance, our freedom to exchange information and express our opinions is quickly becoming an endangered species.
This is why MEDIA REFORM must be addressed by our next president!
