Lebanon: One Unexploded Bomb Per Person
Lebanon: One Unexploded Bomb Per Person
SRIFA, Southern Lebanon - Close to a million unexploded bombs are estimated to litter southern Lebanon, according to UN forces engaged in the hazardous task of removing them. The United Nations Interim Force In Lebanon (UNIFIL) was created by the Security Council in 1978 to confirm an Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon and restore international peace and security. After the war last year it has a new job on its hands.
Following the July-August war between Israel and the Hezbollah in Lebanon, UNIFIL enhanced its force and took on new tasks such as monitoring the cessation of hostilities and removing untold numbers of unexploded missiles, mines and cluster bombs.
Most of these lie in southern Lebanon, which took the brunt of bombings from Israeli warplanes.
Lebanon has a population of four million, close to half of it in capital Beirut. Given the population distribution, there could be almost as many unexploded bombs as there are people in southern Lebanon.
"Between 10-40 percent of the cluster bombs do not explode on impact," a lieutenant who gave his name as Verbeke, with the Belgian contingent of UNIFIL, told IPS at the site of a 500kg unexploded bomb in Srifa, a little town near the border. "Sometimes they get stuck in trees or bushes, and there are Lebanese people being injured or killed by them nearly every single day."
Israeli warplanes roared overhead as he spoke, in clear violation of the ceasefire agreement brokered between Lebanon and Israel.
Verbeke pointed to one of his Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams in action. The fuse of the 500kg bomb was removed and detonated, leaving the weapon harmless. It was then loaded onto a UN truck, and carried to a detonation site, to be exploded there out of harm's way.
Lebanese living nearby are grateful for such efforts.
"The UN is doing great work here," Wissam Mousawi, a construction worker who lives near the site of this unexploded bomb told IPS. "They are really fantastic."
But this was just one small success. According to the Belgians as many as 800,000 unexploded ordnance (UXO), and possibly more, still remain. Meanwhile, scores of Lebanese civilians have died from contacting cluster bombs. More than 200 have been wounded, most of them severely.
"We are clearing approximately 50 square metres of land per day," the chief of the Beligian engineers detachment who gave his name as Lt. Col. Watteeuw told IPS back at their base. "The UN Mine Action Coordination Centre manages 60 de-mining teams working throughout the south. Many are UNIFIL teams, but most are private contracting companies."
When asked if they had received any information to assist in locating the munitions from Israel, Watteeuw said, "That's a good question, but you would have to go 20km south of here (into Israel) to obtain that information."
He estimates it would take "probably more than three to five years" to clear southern Lebanon of what he estimates to be 900 air and artillery strike areas. But that would still only be the flat areas, and not include hills and other areas where munitions have yet to be found.
Watteeuw said his teams are finding hundreds of thousands of unexploded cluster bombs, along with smaller numbers of grenades, artillery rounds, anti-personnel mines, anti-tank mines and bombs of all varieties.
Thus far, civilian contractor teams have cleared approximately 110,000 UXO, and UNIFIL teams like the Belgian teams the colonel oversees, approximately 25,000.
"In Belgium we've cleared 100 tonnes of UXO on average every year since World War I," he added. "So this could take a long time."
Teams from China, France, Italy, Finland, Ireland, Turkey and Spain are also engaged in clearing unexploded bombs.
Much of the population in the south relies on tobacco, vegetable and fruit farms to make their living. With UXO littering countless fields, many are unable to work.
Local people in affected areas continue to be anxious about further Israeli aggression against them, even as they re thankful to the UN.
"I think it's a good thing for UNIFIL to help us get our land back," Mohammed Kundoulay, a 17-year-old secondary school student in the area told IPS. "We need this help now after the Israelis conducted terrorism against us."
Kundoulay hid with his family in their home during the first 10 days of the war before fleeing to Beirut.
Anther student, Jaffar Assaf, told IPS that the UN de-mining teams were doing a great job, but was angry at what he called double standards.
"We hope the UN maintain their criteria in helping us now and help to defend us from Israel," he said. "In reality, the UN should be in Israel to defend us from them, since they were the ones who invaded Lebanon, not vice versa."
UNIFIL maintains a presence in southern Lebanon, and not in Israel, although the forces carry out helicopter patrols over the tense border area.

Show All'Aladdin', wasn't the Irgun, or the Etzel group created to fight Hezbollah??? oh sorry, I think I got the dates wrong, didn't I. What you see in peoples messages and in IR is the realization of cause and effect. But you will remember that Kahane once said in favour of expulsion of the Palestinians: 'There are no innocent palestinians... because they live there!'
"Aladdin": Maybe you should put down that drug that is making you so aggressive and try a peace pipe. How about volunteering in a refugee camp for a week or two, or help clear some of that unexploded ordinance? Everyone sees right through you.
Another amazing fact: it is so common to identify with the obvious victim and see the stronger side as the obvious evil. Israel is despised by the larger majoroty of the world, and truth it is, it hands are not clean.
Self righteousness is rooted in the assumption that the other side is somewhat clean of any blame. We need good guys and bad guys don't we? It is so easy to demonize something that appear to contradict our aspiration for a fairy tale existence.
Ask yourself why did Arafat keep the BILLIONS of $ in donations to himself. It is to fool all those who buy the fairy tale. Keeping the Palestinians poor, uneducated, and suffering is a wonderful political tool.
You can trust historical facts, Peace could have been acheived long ago and no illegal confiscation of land would have occurred had the the Palestinian (or shall we say IRAN) had any interest in a fair resolution. The proo of tat is that Israel has extended its arm for peace MULTIPLE TIMES, through Rabin, Barak and even Olmert today. The response is always a spit in the face.
Hezbollah, Iran, and Hamas have no interest in Peace. What they want is clear and needs no words.
Poor victims have no peace of conscience - noone is free of immense guilt inthis situation... and all those who point the blame in one direction only, can safely consider themselves self righteous.
We talk so often about border violations, we have to make again the distinction about us and them, we [us] can violate any border, ship weapons and supply weapons and we have to make sure we face a disarmed/weakened opponent [sanctions are good.] Often when I hear the discussion about suicide bombings I know it must be so much more efficient to take a helicopter gun ship and push a button, sheering in the process and re-usable again and again, as using this ancient method of a personal - or one-way weapon delivery system.
Fighting a weak opponent was in times past maybe necessary but nothing to be proud of because a formidable opponent brought honor, today, a nation able of fiercly fighting back will be put into the basket signed 'diplomacy'.
But to leave a deadly legacy, hoping for casualties and fatalities for a long time to come... is...
sorry, I'm lost for words.
Its not surprising that Israeli does not rely on the UN, considering its defiance of UN resolutions.
Its behaviour is simply astonishing in scope and magnitude.
Its not a matter of self righteousness, simply a matter of historical record.
The relentless confiscation of land, illegal settlements, roads etc has never ceased, it continues to this moment.
Its worse than tragic its an on going state of self delusion and unacknowledged error.

It's just amazing that the mention of Israel violating the ceasefire is never missed... To refresh your memory, The Hezbolla has NOT disarmed and is still smuggling heavy weaponry from Syria/Iran. This is the most fundamental violation of cease fire agreement if you ask me.
Do you expect Israel to naively rely on the UN for its protection?! Been there, done that!
Unfortunately, many Lebanese civilians are too brainwashed and intimidated by the Hezbollah to really understand who is actually poisonning their lives. Israel would sign a peace accord tomorrow with Seniora had the Hezbollah been out of the picture.
The wages of war are all too well known for people living on all sides of the borders of the Middle East. Noone likes it. This situation is beyond tragic, and yet, self-righteousness will surely not be the beginning of the solution.
I've been thinking about the "American Way of Life" alot lately. I'm
wondering what, besides, TV and movies, is going to sustain this illusion
that we, Americans have some fix on great living. I was listening
alternately to some awful bent-right talk radio and my local progressive
talk radio. I'll admit that this exercise in trying to "hear" those whose
views I don't share and don't understand is trying. I haven't the mature
detachment I would like to enable me to listen for very long at a single
sitting. One funny thing I did notice was a similarity in advertising on each station. Hmm. Silly stuff mostly, some harmful
like Ironite, the toxin laden lawn chemical mix which is supposed to make
grass green. I haven't had TV for several years. When its on in a public
place, I really pay attention. Am progressive radio is new in my area - I
like some of the hosts so I thought I could put up with the advertising.
I even bought a diet product. But it made me think. Wow. I really like the progressive radio station but here comes the brainwashing.
Consume. Think about frivolous things, do I need to lose weight ( yes, I
already know that one ),would I sleep better on a plastic mattress plast foam or air? Should I be saving for a new vacumn cleaner? And that's just radio. TV - now there's a drug with dual action. Lull
'em with insipid programing or even interesting programing and then reel
them in with commercials which are so clever one has to guess at what product or service is being sold. I worked on the production of some household name television commercials in years past. Used to be - show them how those who have what we're selling are happier. Now, the hip ones want us to think "they" share our malaise, but they are cool. Americans in general are not so bad. We're just so ridiculously naive and intellectually lazy and drugged out on coffee, real drugs, celebrity gossip, TV or overwork so we can pay forall this unneeded stuff, we can't see past our own daily grind. Most of us do care when a neighbor's kid is in an accident, we wish or pray for their suffering to be alieviated. We take over a cassarole, a salad, some new magazines to the parent living out of the hospital waiting room. Or if we don't, we wish we had. Television surely could have more coverage of the suffering of our fellow humans. It can be used to move us to action
( Katrina - 911 ) but ultimately, is it an action stimulated by human
connection or some vague attachment to a cause. Human connection is
universally applicable. Is it possible that if
we knew love of our brothers and sisters throughout the world, that RV
sales would drop and we would willing participate directly in healing.
Instead of leisure world, our seniors and retired workers would eagerly
anticipate their turn at helping the wounded and we would all make sacrifices to halt the maiming before its begun. Christianity would be
a verb. I wish I knew how to bring the suffering in Lebanon to the
attention of our countrymen in a meaningful way. So instead, I can only
thank those who contributed to the writing of this and other articles,
those who make the documentaries, and those who do go to directly serve the suffering and then write home to their neighbors.
Look at the bright side. With the help of our Israeli friends we were able to clear out our inventory of older, less reliable cluster bombs, so that in the future most of them will explode during the initial offensive while civilians are safe in their shelters, and fewer of them will remain to blow up curious children. At this rate we should achieve an acceptable level of civility in another millenium or so.
The US government can hang its head in shame for its lack of effort. Remember this voters, Kucinich had a resolution for a ceasefire early on, that received little support. I wrote my Democratic senator twice to support Kucinich, which he didn't. In fact, his reply sounded something out of Bushs' mouth.
Just when is Israel going to stop getting Welfare payments from the US taxpayer? Want to talk about gun control in the US? How odd no one brings up "free" arms control for Israel.
Israel is a truly despicable little country.
this is a great tragedy and our(american) hands are bloody from this as well. i would think a better way to secure this border would be to try to make peace, not exacerbate the problem with more hatred and reason for revenge!
It is estimated that 350,000 were dropped on the last three days of the war, since then three persons have been injured or killed daily. Imagine if this happened in Israel we would be hearing about it daily.
