Martin Sheen Cited again for Nuke Site Trespass
MERCURY, Nev. - Martin Sheen was among a group of peace activists cited during an anti-nuclear protest Sunday at the Nevada Test Site, authorities said.Dozens of people took part in the rally sponsored by the Nevada Desert Experience outside the test site, 70 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
Organizers estimated the crowd size at 150, but Nye County Sheriff Tony DeMeo put the figure at about 75.
''We are asking for nuclear disarmament and peace,'' organizer Ming Lai said. ''We are asking for the Nevada Test Site to stop doing the testing they're doing. The only reason they're doing it is to make bombs.''
A total of 39 protesters, including Sheen, were released after being cited by sheriff's deputies for crossing onto test site property following the rally, test site spokesman Darwin Morgan said.
Sheen, who spent seven seasons playing President Josiah Bartlet on the TV drama series ''The West Wing,'' has received similar citations at the test site in the past.
Also cited was retired Army Col. Ann Wright, who resigned as a senior diplomat at the U.S. Embassy in Mongolia in 2003 to protest the Iraq war.
Citations also were issued to Shoshone Nation leader Carrie Dann of Nevada and Roman Catholic priest Louis Vitale of the San Francisco Bay area.
The protest, which featured speeches and folk music, culminated a weeklong march to the site from Las Vegas by demonstrators.
DeMeo said many protesters, including Sheen, complimented sheriff's deputies for their handling of the citations, he said.
''They're very respectful to us and we're that way to them,'' the sheriff said. ''They get their point across, get the citations and then they're on their way.''
The sprawling test site is where the federal government conducted above- and below-ground nuclear detonations from 1951 to 1992. It remains the site of non-nuclear government tests on radioactive materials.
A similar rally drew about 35 demonstrators to the test site last year, including 21 who were cited for trespassing.

To remind ourselves and reflect upon how turbulent the protests against the Vietnam War actually became, look to see if your cable provider offers the documentary: U.S. versus John Lennon. This documentary demonstrates the extent to which Nixon's fear of Lennon's capacity to muster public sentiment became, and the depths to which Nixon sunk to abuse of power in effort to have Lennon deported, on trumped up charges. Nixon set his Hoover dogs out and hounded this poor guy for years. Lennon refused to cave in, and at the end, won in the Supreme Court.
Let us not allow them to Nixon us again!

Well JP, look at California as far as an actor running things. While the Governator is not a true progressive, he is promoting some sane energy policies and is proving to be a bit adaptable to his conditions. I agree Stephen, Sheen does have guts--lots of arrests for promoting peace. The thing about actors, producers and directors is this: not only are they superb communicators (even a "B" actor like Reagan was a great communicator) but they also are great at doing projects. Movies are big projects involving hundreds of people working in concert towards one goal. Sheen, with his genuine credentials as a true progressive would likely be quite good as a president. At his age (in his 60s I think) he could fulfill his dream of a peaceful world, that's for sure. What is the presidency if not a big project? Hey if Moyers won't run (he declined the proposals instigated by Molly Ivins, John Nichols and Ralph Nader in CommonDreams articles in a postcard to me and others who urged him to do so) maybe progressives should recruit Sheen. He sure would make presidential debates interesting. Vince, if he were to run though, we need to find some way to keep him away from your wife. :-)
No kidding. Why is it only Republican actors run for president? And while we are at it, once Sheen is elected, he should nominate all the writers from West Wing to cabinet posts, since they did such a great job handling all those problems. One thing is certain: Allison Janney as Press Secty sure beats Tony Snow any day.
Do you think a bunch of actors could do a worse job than Bush and his gang of thieves? Since the current gang of thieves is in fantasy land anyway, it certainly makes sense to just have actors running the country.
Martin Sheen has guts and he puts the U.S. Catholic Bishops to shame. Also Fr. John Dear, S.J., renouned peace activist, does so as well. More Catholics in the U.S. should be putting the U.S. Bishops to shame, but the vast majority remain the clueless faithful.
Earthian: my wife would agree with you and I don't want that handsome s.o.b. anywhere near my house. Just kidding.
I wish Martin Sheen would run for president in the Democratic Party primaries or for the Green Party. In the eyes of many Americans he already has presidential experience; and he is a true, committed progressive, a great communicator, and has nearly 100 percent name recognition and many other great qualities. And I think he'd be a great president.
What a way to go Martin!!! Turn up the heat on these war criminals. Don't allow them to Nixon us again!!! We need a Ginsburg rally to sit on the, not so, white house lawn, chanting, out demons out.
Best Wishes and Hope.
