'US Ready to Strike Iran on Good Friday'
The United States will be ready to launch a missile attack on Iran's nuclear facilities as soon as early this month, perhaps "from 4 a.m. until 4 p.m. on April 6," according to reports in the Russian media on Saturday. According to Russian intelligence sources, the reports said, the US has devised a plan to attack several targets in Iran, and an assault could be carried out by launching missiles from fighter jets and warships stationed in the Persian Gulf.
Russian news agency RIA Novosti quoted a security official as saying, "Russian intelligence has information that the US Armed Forces stationed in the Persian Gulf have nearly completed preparations for a missile strike against Iranian territory."
The Russian Defense Ministry rejected the claims of an imminent attack as "myths." There was no immediate response from Washington.
The reports come as the Iranian chief of staff, Hassan Fayrouz Abadi, was quoted on Saturday by Iran's Fars news agency warning leaders of Arab countries that Israel plans to open a "suicidal attack" on its neighbors this summer, to "prevent the withdrawal of the US troops from Iraq and the area."
"I warn the dear leaders and Muslim brothers in the neighboring countries of the occupied territories that this suicidal attack of the Zionists is threatening them," he said.
The countries in danger, he said, were "Lebanon and Syria, and later Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia."
Also on Saturday, Russia urged Britain and Teheran to resolve the dispute over 15 British sailors and marines captured by Iran last week, a local news agency reported.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mikhail Kamynin urged the two sides to provide the United Nations with their own assessments as to what happened and where exactly the detention occurred so that the body could conduct an independent probe.
"We hope these actions will provide a foundation for the soonest possible resolution of the crisis," Kamynin was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad insisted that the captured British sailors and marines trespassed in Iranian waters and called world powers "arrogant" for failing to apologize, the country's official news agency reported.
"The British occupier forces did trespass our waters. Our border guards detained them with skill and bravery. But arrogant powers, because of their arrogant and selfish spirit, are claiming otherwise," IRNA quoted Ahmadinejad as saying during a speech in the southeastern city of Andinmeshk.
The European Union grappled with a double bind over Iran Saturday - the country's nuclear program and its seizure of the British troops - and reported no progress on either issue.
A debate about Iran's nuclear ambitions had been scheduled as a key agenda item but "was overshadowed to a certain extent by the issue of the sailors and marines," German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said after hosting a two-day EU foreign ministers meeting in Bremen, Germany.
The Foreign Ministry in Iran dismissed the EU's "biased and meddlesome" comments on the captured troops, saying the dispute solely involved the governments of Iran and Britain.
Speaking to reporters in Bremen, British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett urged Iran to resolve the crisis over the military personnel peacefully, saying London remains open to dialogue.
"We encourage Iran to peacefully resolve this issue," she said.
"We continue to express our willingness to engage in dialogue and discussions with Iran," she added. "That is very much in the best interest of our people and that is our foremost concern."
"I think everyone regrets that this position has arisen," she said. "What we want is a way out of it."

I believe Hitler would have sought to peacefully resolve the issue, as he earnestly sought to do with Britain,in the late 1930s. However, his efforts were rejected out of hand by warmongers Churchill and "Lord" Halifax, each having already determined to crush Germany, and to erase that nation from the face of the earth.
The illustrious 'leaders' of the US have similarly rejected overtures from Iran, for dialogue. Israel wants Iran destroyed, so its US robot sycophant dutifully and unquestioningly lurches into action.
The US will reap what it sows. Happily, so will Israel.
The entire sailor affair is a provocation. It is too bad that the Iranians have walked into it but it is not a legitimated justification for the US to slaughter tens if not hundreds of thousands. We have been holding Iranians working in Iraq hostage for some time. Congress needs to take a bold stand against aggression aimed at Iran so call your misrepresentative about it today!
Just what the neo-cons wanted, an excuse to kill for Mammon.
Bomb a nation in an unprovoked attack on Good Friday? After manufacturing some lame excuses about being threatened by the same weak nation which has no interest in threatening you? That is exactly what Jesus would do! Well, maybe not Jesus, but that is exactly what George Washington would do! Well, maybe not Washington, but it sounds like something Hitler might do. Is that a good rule to follow -- WWHD -- What would Hitler do?
Our President (small p)is hell-bent on self-destructing and he is taking the rest of the world with him. Would you trust him with your life? Let those who are drawing plans for impeachment introduce the bill now, before it is too late to save thousands upon thousands more of human lives.
If President Bush is still in office after bombing Iran, using nuclear weapons - exactly what they are saying they will do - , than the American people deserve whatever hell is unleashed. Most likely that will come in the form of massively decreased civil rights, another gas crisis, and perhaps more scary form of authoritarian intent. George W. Bush needs to be out of that White House yesterday, and if our Congress allows him to take it as far as bombing yet another country for purely offensive purposes, they, nor him, deserve any mercy. The people simply will have to rise to the occasion!
With all that in mind, bomb away Mr. Bush.
It will be interesting to see what Congress does (or doesn't do) should we go to war with Iran. It will be even more interesting to see what the American people do (or don't do).
I've been loathe to give up on this experiment. However, if the people give up, then I'll have no choice but to go elsewhere and watch as a society devolves into the ash heap of history.
How fitting. The modern day equivalents of crucifixions to be held on Good Friday. Hopefully, George the Asinine's ass will be among those hanging out on that day or soon thereafter. His autopsy should corroborate what most of us know: there was room in his skull for a large family of robins.

"It will be interesting to see what Congress does (or doesn't do) should we go to war with Iran. It will be even more interesting to see what the American people do (or don't do)."
Every member of Congress should be signing a letter to the President containing a statement that if he invades Iran without their consent, he will be impeached and sent to jail.
Or are we being hustled to the brink of oblivion repeatedly just like Jim Jones used to do with the non-tainted kool ade so that when it was time to do it with the cyanide laced stuff nobody was particulkarly alarmed over it?
Steady lads and lassies--and if and when it does happen then we need to act rather than just talk.
Why am I not allowed to know where the British sailors were when they were captured? The news media not only don't tell me where they were, they don't tell me why they won't tell me where they were. This is censorship of the worst kind. Who censors BBC and the rest of the western media, and why do "free world" reporters submit to authoritarian measures? Are they prisoners themselves or merely whores?
Poet,
We need to act right now!
Congress is in recess right now!! Think that has anything to do with the possible date chosen by Bush to invade Iran? An where is Gates in all this?
I reluctantly agree with the speculation about the true ends of the neocon totalitarians. Millions continue to ask: how could the Germans have let Hitler come to power - how could they not see? And yet we find ourselves here again, looking it square in the face and still full of denial.
Yesterday I watched my eldest coach his young soccer team on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, fulfilling a promise he made to me (his coach)as an 8 year old. On the way home I hunkered down to what is possibly going to be the worst week of my life. Of our lives.
Don't hold your breath. Too many 'good Germans' - Americans won't do anything, just like this 'Democratic Congress' isn't really doing anything either. CYA is the only rule.
Nobody wants to admit to being a Nazi - or a neo-Nazi. Those who thought the Germans were monsters for doing far less than what is being done by the US today are claiming the moral high-ground. Well, that's what the Nazis claimed as well - few seem to remember that part. That's why monsters continue to lead nations to their doom - too many people unable to admit the truth. Those 'bloodthirsty savages' are us. Pogo was right.
Satellite photos show that the UK ship was in Iraqi waters. Using the analogy of the battle of Stalingrad, there were no good guys. So it is between the US and Iran. Iran's leader also denies the holocaust, and invited David Duke as an expert on the subject. While I have no use for Bush, I likewise have no use for Iran. It may be for Bush, the boy who cried "Wolf".

Simple high-explosives, depleted uranium, and millions of cluster bombs will no longer do the trick—it is time to nuke the Arabs and Muslims, as "Western logic," i.e., use of nuclear weapons is unconscionable, does not apply.
Ken,
Where did you see those satellite photos? I'm not disputing it - I don't know - however, I'd like to see some corroboration.
History has shown far too many cases of deliberate acts of subterfuge and infiltration for me to leave my skepticism behind.
Laos, Cambodia, the Gulf of Tonkin...too many cases.
This from Craig Murray, former UK Ambassador to Uzbekistan (until he was cashiered for openly objecting to UK and US support for torture there)
"The Iran/Iraq maritime boundary shown on the British government map does not exist. It has been drawn up by the British Government. Only Iraq and Iran can agree on their bilateral boundary, and they have never done this in the Gulf, only inside the Shatt because there it is the land border too. This published boundary is a fake with no legal force ... Anyway, the UK was plainly wrong to be ultra-provocative in disputed waters ...
They [the British Marines] would under international law have been allowed to enter Iranian territorial waters if in "hot pursuit" of terrorists, slavers, or pirates.... But they were looking for smuggled vehicles attempting to evade car duty. What has the evasion of Iranian or Iraqi taxes got to do with the Royal Navy?"
I think the issue of where the Brits were before being seized is besides the point.
I believe the neo-cons in the Iranian government were looking for an excuse--any excuse--to antagonize the neo-cons in the British government, who would then serve to get the neo-cons in the US and Israel involved.
With any luck, nuclear devices will be unleashed, civilians will die, oil supplies will be disrupted causing even greater poverty and despair in the third world.
And the neo-cons of all nations will be ecstatic.
I am not given to mindless optimism.
I think the tide has turned on this administration. I give Bush NO credit for rationality. But I do credit other members of this administration with SOME.
Any kind of nuclear attack on anybody would be an outrage.
An attack on IRAN would be an outrage: 'sailorgate' shows just how ineffectual Mr. A is; let the people of Iran bring an end to his rule, and his silly posturing.
An attack on GOOD FRIDAY? There are lots of whacko millenialists in the country. But there are also lots of people with approximately normal sensibilities. An unprovoked attack on Good Friday would unleash the war of All Against All.
"Operation Ajax (1953) was a covert operation by the United Kingdom and the United States to remove the democratically elected nationalist cabinet of Iranian Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh from power, to support the Pahlavi dynasty and consolidate the power of Mohammed Reza Pahlavi in order to preserve the Western control of Iran's hugely lucrative oil infrastructure." -Wikipedia
Nonsense charms the multitude; plain sense is despised. And this is where we are at. Plain, common sense is not given a hearing in this administration or country. Reading The Project for a New American Century's list of goals a few years ago, it is now obvious that their wishes are about to be fulfilled.
We need a massive nationwide walkout, boycott - something, to catch the attention of those in power. They have to know that this will not be stood for. And I pray that the top military brass who said they would resign if an attack on Iran were to occur keep their promise.
We cannot let this madness continue. The ramifications of such an attack would be devastating.
I'm sure Iran is also privy to Russian Intelligence reports on the Internet. If I were Iran, I would arrest and hold British soldiers. It's not much, but it's all they've got if the reports of a Good Friday nuclear bombing by the U.S. is truly ready to happen.
An Iraqi fisherman said that the British ship had gone into Iran territorial waters; wonder what happened to him?
If Israel with its now 400 nuclear-armed missiles, courtesy of the U.S., adds to this new Holocaust against Iran and it's people, and our nuclear subs send off their missiles and all those mushroom clouds rise as death into the air spewing radiation, global warming will seem minor. Radiation in the air drifts with the wind currents. Radiation does nasty things to soft physical bodies.
Most nuclear weapons mounted on missiles now make what was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki mere bomblets.
Taken out of the recent appropriations bills which Bush threatens to veto because of the time frame for the troops to start coming home, was the sentence, roughly, that Bush had to consult/get approval from Congress before bombing Iran ... if it were necessary to bomb Iran.
Replacing that restriction is that Bush alone will decide to bomb or not to bomb Iran without input from Congress. The Senate has similar wording in its bill.
When I read that Congress knuckled under, I thought they must be crazy, heartless idiots.
Bush says he will veto the bill. I doubt he will because the hydrocarbon legislation is buried in there,to wit: all the major U.S., old Colonial-powers oil corporations together get to control 81 per cent of Iraqi oil and all the profits are theirs.
Plus Bush has been given license to be The Decider about bombing Iran.
Let us hope the Russian Intelligence info was a plant by the U.S. to try to scare Iran into capitulating on any further nuclear development, even for peaceful purposes as they claim, but which claim has been dismissed by the U.S. as a lie.
Saddam Hussein insisted there were no weapons of mass destruction and no nuclear program. Inspectors found nothing, but were not permitted to continue their investigation. Condi Rice soaked the media with the scare story of THE MUSHROOM CLOUD, and the public bought it for the most part.
Bush gave the order to invade Iraq backed by the majority of the members of both houses of Congress. No WMD have been found.
It seems to me if Israel, Pakistan, and India can have nukes, what right have we to make a bogeyman out of Iran. Inspectors who went there said they did not find evidence of nuclear weapons, but only progress toward nuclear power for peaceful purposes, with the potential, with the enriched uranium to make bombs someday. But the bombs and delivery systems were still far from fact. That fell from the news stories fast. New story is Iran has missile systems and bombs curtesy of Russia.
The insanity, however, is that, at the outset of his U.S. selection coups, GWBUSH disregarded hard-won treaties and policies: to reduce nuclear weapons, no first-strike as a policy,no development or use of biological/chemical weapons, etcetera.
Yeah, I know, It's About The Oil, Stupid, but more stupid is not understanding what radiation on the wind means to the rest of the world.
We all seem to be part and parcel of the Slow, but speeding-up, suicide of the Human Species and the murder of a few billion species of animal, insect, marine, plant, and ecologically crucial, micro-cellular life.
And how many years has there been wonderment at how the German people did not do anything about Hitler, the on-going extermination of the Jews, political prisoners, gypsies, and those who were considered inferior because of mental, emotional and physical disabilities, and his plans for the Third Reich as the quintessential Aryan empire of enormous power and purity?
I'll bet there were lots of discussions behind closed doors and lots of letters written.
It's a little different now. We can send our letters and post our messages by computer and join discussion boards.
DENIAL is not just a river in Egypt. And the German people did not have a corner on the market of DENIAL when it comes right down to it.
I don't have an immediate, wise answer, but I know we have to find one, create one lest we perish.
While the effects of nuclear war seem repugnant to most normal, morally senscient humans, those same effects are looked forward to as part of the plan by those who expect to reign in The New World Order. Depopulation, particularly in the resource-rich developing world, is very much called for and underway. Just look at what NWO types have been and are doing in Zimbabwe.
My understanding of the situation concerning worther or not the British were in Iranian waters is up for some discussion.
The only two nations that can establish a line are Iran and Iraq, which is something they have never agreed a upon.Their fore the British claim that were in Iraqi waters is just meaningless as the Iranian claim that their were in Iranian waters.
Any border in those waters was established by the British which is illegitimate for the reasons stated, which is that only two nations that can establish a line are Iran and Iraq under international law.
Their are no legal borders in those waters.
I don't see it from a religious point of view but rather a privilede which people like Bush own something and they aren't willing to share with the masses, period end of story. What the bushys don't have a grasph of is the demogration of the large urban areas and what that means to the privilged.
When it comes to religion I'm an ignorant. I do not know what Good Friday stands for, but I assume it stand for something good. Therefore, my advice to Bush is why mess up a good name by attacking Iran and killing thousands of people which for ever would associate the name Good Friday with mass murder? How about doing it on a bad Saturday?
I see some well-intentioned people here advising that we should write to our representative in Congress to forestall a U.S. attack on Iran. But those in Congress are not really OUR representatives. This is how it works: The US helps Israel with the US taxpayers' money to the tune of $3,000,000,000 to $5,000,000,000 annually. About half of that amount goes to Israel in the form of arms; the other half is in cash. A large amount of that cash routes back to various Jewish organizations in the US such as the influential lobby called the American Israeli Political Action Committee (AIPAC). This lobby spends the US taxpayers' money during elections to influence election outcomes by contributing campaign funds only to those individuals who are, or who promise to act as, friends of Israel. In other words, when elected they will be in the pocket of Israel. Have you not heard what these people say when they are running for office? I have heard this so many times that it makes me sick. This is what they invariably say: My first priority is the security of Israel. Wait a minute! Are they running for office in Israel, or running here to protect the security and the interests of the American people. Israel, and by extension, AIPAC, want the U.S. to attack Iran, and there is not a damn thing the public can do about it. It's no use writing to the representatives of AIPAC. This is in addition to the fact that Congress is packed with 75 real, Zionist Jews. No wonder the new U.S. name is Usrael, and the new name for the U.S. State Department is: The other occupied territory.
Impeachment proceedings must be started immediately right now. These monsters must be removed from office NOW.
Impeach - Cheney/Bush/Gonzales - Immediately. Impeach.
Some States have forwarded resolutiions to Congress and more States must follow suit NOW. Impeach.
Wonder if George's God told him Good Friday would be the perfect day?
Bush/Cheney have already committed many impeachable offences - everyone knows that.
Citizens must demand that their reps in the US House file impeachment charges now...!
Break the hypnosis.
When is our toleration of the neo-cons madness and double-dealing going to end? Somehow Bush and company would rig this to look like they were knoghts in shining armor. Isn't about time the American people rise up and call a halt to their idiocy? We'd better do it soon, or before you know it, we'll wind up with some kind of trumped up reason for putting the 2008 elections on indefinite hold.
"Ivashov noted that it was not to be excluded that the Pentagon would use smaller tactical nuclear weapons against targets of the Iranian nuclear industry."
http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2007/03/366119.html
I read this to mean that 'within this attack which we think is imminent, the U.S. MIGHT use small tactical nuclear weapons'.
A huge air attack on Iran could easily be all 'conventional' weapons: bombs, missiles, cruise missiles, artillery, etc. Even this will be a potential disaster.
How many Americans are even considering that they might LOSE this attack ? The US outspends the World in Offense spending, but it has to spread it very thin (the whole world). Iran spends only 10% what the US spends, but it is all concentrated in Iran. They have a whole coastline of Sizzler missile launchers: the US warships in the Persian Gulf are sitting ducks. And once they are attacked, they will immediately saturate Saudi Arabian refineries with incoming missiles: no amount of Patriot missiles will protect the massive installation from virtual destruction. Blocking the Strait of Hormuz with sunken oil tankers would just be icing on the cake.
It will be the end of the global economy as we know it, starting with bankrupting GM and Ford. Iran could destroy the 'American Way of Life' and still have a better standard of living than next door Iraq has for the last 16 years...
As of 4/5/07 9:55pm PDT, I can find no functional webcams in Tehran... God I hope that doesn't mean...
Okay, here's one:

Whew!
I support a military strike against Iran. I think the war with Iran is inevitable, so I prefer a conventional war now over a nuclear war later. BTW I don't support neoconservatism.
English translation of an article appearing in German from RIA Novosti, April 6, 2007:
Russian Expert: US Attack on Iran at the Earliest in May
MOSCOW, April 6 (RIA Novosti). The USA can begin a military action against Iran at the earliest in May. Until then, the Pentagon will put the Middle-Eastern state under "information-psychological" pressure.
This opinion was voiced on Friday by Anatoly Zyganok, chief of the Center for Military-Political Prognosis at the Russian Institute for Political and Military Analysis and member of the Defense Ministry's Civil Council.
The rumor circulated in the media that the US Air Force would attack Iran as early as April 6 has not proven to be true, concluded the expert in an interview with RIA Novosti. Zyganok presumed that it is a matter of targeted disinformation -- not disseminated without the involvement of the Israeli secret service -- with the goal of putting Iran under psychological pressure.
Within the frame of the "intimidation campaign" against Tehran, several thousand Israeli police and members of the Israeli army practiced preventive measures in March for the case of an Iranian missile attack.
"At the same time, the USA and Israel conducted a joint maneuver under the code name 'Juniper Cobra'. American units took part with the 'Patriot' air defense missile system, the Israeli with the interception missiles 'Arrow'. In this maneuver -- for the first time -- all European segments of the US missile defense system were used, those in Greenland, Norway and Great Britian", reported Zyganok.
According to his information, the USA is currently conducting a major operation against the Taliban -- the largest since 2001 -- which is being kept highly secret. As Zyganok expressed it, the Americans are deploying massive air forces in Afghanistan in order to minimize their losses.
Only after the operation in Afghanistan is concluded can the Pentagon decide for an intervention in Iran, judged Zyganok. Until then, the USA wants, in addition, to eliminate -- according to feasibility -- radical groups in Iraq.
Therefore, the war could begin only at the end of May, the expert said. According to sources in Tehran, the Iranian leadership reckons with no deployment of force whatsoever from the side of the USA until fall, if anything.
