Bush Plays Superhero in Iraq

by Matthew Rothschild

Bush just raised the stakes again in Iraq.

In his defiant speech Wednesday morning, he cast the battle in Iraq in the starkest terms yet. It’s a battle, he said, against “pure evil.”

Bush now says the war in Iraq is against “pure evil.” But you don’t vanquish evil, unless you’re a superhero, which Bush imagines himself to be.

On cue, he then dragged on stage his favorite prop, 9/11, adding: “That evil is the same evil that inspired and rejoiced in the attack of 2001. And that evil must be defeated so we don’t face it here again.”

This language returns Bush to his most messianic, as when, after 9/11, he vowed to “rid the world of evil.”

This is an impossible task, surely, and for Bush to assign it to himself is not only deluded, it’s disastrous.

Especially in the context of Iraq.

For if the battle in Iraq is against “pure evil,” the United States can never leave there until “pure evil” is vanquished.

But you don’t vanquish evil, unless you’re a superhero, which Bush imagines himself to be.

“See, we’re going after killers,” Bush said, and it doesn’t matter whether they are Shiites or Sunnis. “Murderers are murderers,” he said.

The civil war in Iraq is not some comic book, though. And rather than even acknowledge, as the Pentagon belatedly has done, that the situation there is indeed a civil war, Bush vaulted over that term in favor of the Big E.

By defining the situation in Iraq in such simplistic terms, Bush misconstrues the dynamics on the ground and consigns our troops to an endless quest.

Even he seemed to signal that it’s going to go on for quite a while, as he stressed that the Baghdad escalation is just the “opening salvo in a sustained effort.”

But it’s unsustainable, and unwinnable.

And no more U.S. troops, no more Iraqi civilians, should be killed or wounded because of Bush’s superhero fantasies.

Jeeze, it’s almost getting to where Ted Rall could sue Bush for ripping off on his “El Busho” caricature of the Codpiece. http://www.gocomics.com/rallcom/2007/02/19/

I just spent an hour watching speeches of Mussolini in a documentary and, frankly, except that Mussolini had a certain natural theatric talent, the two bozos kind of resemble each other, especially in the empty B.S. department.

Is Bush ever going to recognize that the majority of people on the planet believe him to be the greatest evil in the world? Oh, but wait, he doesn’t care what others think as long as he knows he has the approval of “God.” But doesn’t that put him in the same boat as Osama?

Of course Cheney doesn’t care what the Invisible Guy in the Sky thinks or what anyone else thinks, except for the board members at Halliburton, the major oil companies, and the big defense companies who have the power to give him the opportunity to really rake in the big bucks after his government “service.”

I’ve long considered Bush to be a psychopath. His ‘evil’ speech is just one more confirmation.

I actually thought this article was out of touch. Okay, the superhero metaphor might be right on, but I think Bush’s rhetoric is more aimed at instilling fear in the public in order to countermand the threatened congressional deadline for withdrawal rather than having anything to do with an imagined superhero status. Bush’s reasons for going in were imperialistic greed and power grabbing. Anything that threatenes his and his cohorts’ goal brings on tantrums, nastiness, threats and endless bs…utlimately I fear he will start escalating into violence here in the US and imposing martial law. The fact that so many buy this lie (or pack of lies)is what freaks me out

Bush, Cheney and most of their associates and cronies are perfect examples of “chicken hawks.”

They act like macho men from the blood and sacrifice of others who are far more brave and honorable than they.

All Bush has to do to find EVIL is look at himself,Cheney and the rest of the neocons. With all of the death they have caused around the world who could be more evil than they.Bush/Cheney are tyrant’s and should be impeached at once.

Please! Bush just boils down the situation to a level he can understand. The reality is, we won’t leave. This war was never about weapons or freedom. It was about regional control. The more violence there is, the more justification there will be to remain and keep our bases there. Is it realistic? Of course not! But, as we know, this Assident is a complete moron!

Bush just sees himself. He exhibits absolutely shameless behavior, as does Cheney, Rice, Gonzaless, and most of the others.

They are so far past guilt because they blame everybody else, and do the exact things or far worse than the “evil-doers.” Shameless behavior.

So many members of Congress are the same. It’s also just total denial.

Our country cannot last if we do not change. And my experience is sometimes people do not change, do not wake up until they are brought to their knees by something akin to an emotional sledge hammer.

9-11 … an inside job, I am convinced.

    HIGH, HIGH TREASON …

But … it will take more than one or two with very clear eyes and courage to match.

I suspect we’re in it for it. Karmic payback is long overdue.

    It is all so sick.
