Cheney Speech at BYU Causes Outcry
At BYU -- in the heart of what has been called the reddest county in the nation -- the mere possibility of Vice President Dick Cheney coming to campus is getting some blue blood boiling.
Cheney is scheduled to be Brigham Young University's keynote speaker at this year's graduation ceremonies. While it is a day of celebration for many, some BYU administrators and faculty, alongside parents and students, are expressing displeasure with the VP's visit.
Despite the opposition, BYU spokeswoman Carri Jenkins said that there are currently no plans to eliminate Cheney as a part of the graduation ceremonies.
BYU Marriott School professor Warner Woodworth said that he has received e-mails from all over the world expressing dismay over Cheney's visit.
Woodworth said that some of those e-mails came from parents and LDS stake presidents, particularly in Latin America, expressing anger that Cheney -- whom they called a "warmonger" -- will be representing their children and their church.
Woodworth said that administrators, faculty and even some students and parents are refusing to attend graduation ceremonies if Cheney is speaking. Pickets and other forms of protest are also being planned, he said.
Nephi Henry, a BYU student who will be graduating next month, is working with other students in organizing opposition to Cheney's visit.
Henry said his group felt that it was not appropriate for someone of such an "inflammatory" nature to be at BYU. Henry criticized the move to have Cheney because the vice president does not meet the university's policy on speakers having "a good public reputation and a moral private life." Additionally, he said the invitation violated BYU's policy of political neutrality.
"It certainly looks like the church is endorsing someone of a highly patrician political nature," he said.
Woodworth also expressed concern over Cheney's fitness to speak to graduates at commencement ceremonies. He said that Cheney's moral values were not in line with what BYU represents.
"Cheney's coming here is a contradiction of what we're trying to do," he said. "We represent an institution of peace, he represents an institution of war ... an institution of deception and outright lies." he said.
Despite the harsh criticism that Cheney's invitation has generated, some students and faculty members don't feel that sit-outs and pickets are appropriate.
BYU law school alumna turned Ph.D. student Betsy Fowler took a more cautious approach to the debate.
"A university is a forum for ideas. While members of the university community have the right to make a statement by not attending, personally I think it is too bad that professors would elect not to support their students whose work and dedication this commencement is intended to celebrate," she said.
BYU professor of Spanish and Portuguese Ted Lyon is among those who are very displeased at the scheduling of the vice president. While Lyon is not planning to sit out, he does believe that if a political message is going to be issued, then it is necessary to issue a political message on the other side. "I'm suggesting that we invite Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama," he said.
Lyon said that he has been included in e-mails involving more than 200 students about the vice president's visit. Lyon said the messages had a tone and tenor of "we want our graduation to have a spiritual tone, not a political tone."
Henry said that he is leaning toward a boycott of his own graduation if Cheney speaks.

Show AllRemember when a group of Georgetown law students turned their backs on the attorney general, standing silently for an entire speech? They unfurled a big banner, too. It got a slew of positive media, because the action had a feeling of dignity, observed his right to speak while totally rejecting what he said and stands for. If you got a LOT of people to do that . . .
Martin Luther had a dream..... We're all living a nightmare with these wild ass war gamblers in office. They've lost the house, the car, and the first born, now their betting everything, including are future with a roll of the dice in Iran. Gee maybe it will come up 47 and they will rule entire world, with China, Russia, and India all laying down like little puppy dogs on their backs with paws in the are.... can anyone say third world war. Somebody pinch me, I want to wade up!
Allll we are saaaaaayinggggg ... is give impeachment a channnnnnnnce...
I bet there's some kind of quid pro quo going on at BYU. If I were there, I might just ask what the school did while the Bush administration looked the other way to incur such a monstrous debt that the school had to let Chaney speak. It's inconceivable that BYU initiated the invitation.

Don't get your hopes up my friends! Remember Utah's love-affair with "obedience"
I like the idea of the Abu Graib garbage bag hats!!! But seriously.... wouldn't bullett proof helmets be safer????
Students and others at BYU should contact the Backbone Campaign to rent a charicature of Cheney for demostrations during his visit. See http://BackboneCampaign.org/chaingang.cfm

I think the most appropriate action, for those who oppose the veep's presence, would be to wear black bags over their heads.
I have no doubt that listening to his "psychotic drivel" would be tantamount to torture.
I was fortunate that my 1995 graduation at VCU had Maya Angelou to be the key speaker. What a contrast, someone empathetic with the 'caged bird', and a fascist who would not only put everyone in cages, but have the cages surrounded by cats. Unless this graduation is for a class of Hitler Youth I would say the choice of Cheney as an inspirational speaker is totally inappropriate.
Kestrel's got it right, everyone just turn their back on the Cheney. Unfortunately, I don't think that image would make it on the news.
I know why they invited him. Chaney told them he found the lost gold tablets in a pot of pork and beans. Unfortunately he sent them to Iraq to buy some influence there. God works in mysteeeerious ways. BOO!
Shun him... when he gets introduced, everyone get to their feet, and turn their backs on him. That is how the "old way" is to express displeasure...
I think it is totally inappropriate to turn a graduation ceremony into a political grandstanding event.
As a faculty member, I'd try to orchestrate a 'no confidence' vote for whatever administrators exended the invitation to Cheney.
As a student, I'd be inclined to demand a tuition rebate.
As one of the graduating students, I'd ask my family to stand up and turn their backs to Cheney when he speaks.
As a donor to BYU, I'd write a letter explaining that I would be curtailing my donations until and unless the university returned to its ACADEMIC mission, and invited commencement speakers who were actually accomplished in arts or letters, and NOT politicians.
It's time to throw the money changers out of the temple. Flood the offices of your senators, congressman, and speaker of the house with one word over and over again: IMPEACH !!!!!!!!
This is great! The house of cards are leaning!
IMPEACH! NOW! UNITE!
Dick Cheney, (and I do mean "Dick"), is our modern day version of Mr. Potter from the movie, "Its a Wonderful Life". Can someone not find a wheelchair to complete the picture?
Cheney, Rummy, and Bush should all be behind bars, not spreading their hate at college graduation ceremonies.

Throw the tomatoes at Cheney to show displeasure...
BYU unfortunately has a history of this abuse of its tax exempt status by inviting purely political speakers to campus. I believe it
was the early nineties when Bush I was invited to speak at a similar event there. I would disregard the outcry from the faculty
and students presented in the article as the administration and church hierarchy will disregard it as well. I empathize with
them but they haven't a prayer in moving the done deal. Republicanism is the expectation of Utah Mormon power structure
even fellow Mormon and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid over in Nevada wouldn't get elected dog catcher here due to his party
affiliation. Living la vida loca in Salt Lake City...........
how about they chant:
"DO THE ORDERS STILL STAND?"
"DO THE ORDERS STILL STAND?"
Can you imagine?? Awesome!

Poet,
Love the attitude and the approach.
Thanks
Oh, let Cheny speak at BYU and if you're unhappy about it, go listen anyway. Just remember to bring lots of tomatoes.
dcgoad, all religions have fables that sound outrageous to people who did not grow up hearing them.
karlof1, no empire builder/war monger has any claim to moral high ground, 100per cent right.
poet has the best idea. I don't think this white house crowd has a clue how deeply their doings are hated. Let him try speaking to any audience that is not preapproved.
Imagine, if on cue, the audience donned Abu Graib-style plastic head bags...
Maybe students could wear goalie masks and use duck-calls as they sit before the man and his outrageous drivel. Although with tight security, maybe a taped recording(hidden)-- to play over the sound system every time he opens his mouth to speak.
An on-camera sound-byte moment would be useful--
Also, now would be a good time for the students who are vocal and who object to Cheney as a guest to have a campaign of dialogue with fellow students about the torture issue-- that alone may increase the number dissenters. Wonder what kind of history they teach at BYU?
Ridicule is called for here-- the only response to arrogance.
Students, ask for a statesman, instead of a thug!
Somebody received something substantial to arrange this.
Free Speech includes dissent, something for which Cheney and friends have shown absolutely no use.
ALSO: If the University is to be held up as a "forum for free expression of ideas," then it behooves the University Community to strive to be relevant and coherent with the best examination of Reality available.
You cannot sweep the actions and consequences of the current Administration under the rug. Information is available
As an academic institution, you have an obligation to your community not to obfuscate what this man represents to the world. Even if members of your community believe his story, the tremendous animosity he has created throughout the world aginst our nation is reason enough to not want him as any sort of role model.
Just his connection to Halliburton and its role in Iraq is reason enough to consider him inappropriate for a comencement address.
Having him come to give lecture is one thing (and that would be bad enough, but tolerable). Holding him up as someone with wisdom to impart to a graduating class is a cynical and entirely different thing.
NOT to protest his invitation to speak in that capacity would be a dereliction of duty to any informed person who cares about the future of our planet, of our nation and of education in this land.
Pity Timothy Mc Veigh wasn't alive... They could have invited him to inspire students in Bomb making techniques...
Are the admin officials at BYU that STUPID or INSANE....
CHENEY should be giving his speech at THE HAGUE infront of the OFFICE OF THE PROSECUTOR...
I'm very sure Dr Luis Moreno Ocampo would love to hear from him.......
Give me a break. The Mormons outraged about Cheney speaking at BYU. Hardly. The comments are by the BYU disenfranchised. He will be welcomed with open arms by the majority of grads, faculty and rest of the Mormon community. Don't ever forget these people believe in a completely fabricated religion so what is to prevent them from absorbing the nonsensical Cheney rhetoric?
along with rove
On Clinton or Obama as alternates, they both embrace Empire and support its oppression and death-resulting policies, and as such are no better. BYU might as well have invited Charles Manson, he being of similar noteriety and the moral equivalent of Cheney.
Milosevics empty cell is where he should be right now,not at BYU.
I graduated from BYU in 1987. I fully understand and accept the values incorporated in the university's mission. In my opinion, no national leader insults those values more than Dick Cheney. How could BYU even consider inviting this man to speak at commencement? Has the university administration, people I have respected greatly in the past, lost its mind? This is a man whose disdain for the Constitution is evident, whose greed and dishonesty have achieved legendary status. This is a man who starts wars and who condones torture. I don't care what he SAYS in whatever carefully crafted speech his writers help him construct. His ACTIONS speak of a deep moral vacuum. If some club at BYU wants to invite him to speak, fine. But to speak in commencement? I always dreamed that my children would attend BYU also. I'm not sure of that anymore. Yes, it is that important. God help us all.
Cheer up Mormons! Just because Cheney is speaking does not you have to approve of it. In fact it might be nice to see the"Dickster" have to appear in a venue where the audience is not preapproved by some White House Secret Service goon squad.
Now just in case your very own BYU officials turn into some gestapo auxilliary threatening sanctions against any students or faculty who have the temerity to either stand with their backs turned or heckle the "vewy important personage" speakling I would like to suggest some other less confrontational protests: Chewing bubble gum and blowing bubbles. Inserting ear plugs until he sits his sorry ass down. Maybe even pin drop silence and absolutely no response to his verbal flatulation.
Pesonal to any scheduled student speakers revolted by having to appear on the same dias with this immoral troll. For an idea on what is possible see Jean Sara Rohe's "introduction" of John McCain at the 2006 graduation ceremony of the New School. It is at:
http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=06/06/09/1427215&mode=thread&tid=25
Oh let the man talk. And let the protesters sit in the audience and boo the psychotic drivel that is sure to emanate from his mouth. Now that would make a film clip on the news that would make the news worth watching for a change. Maybe the dissenting students could arrange to fling a few tomatoes and eggs his way too. It's way past time to stop showing any respect to these thugs and criminals running our government. Way past time.
Red states are no longer that stupid or so I had heard. I guess not. I certainly wouldn't want to go four years at a University only to have a punk like Dick Cheney ruin my commencement ceremonies with his presence let alone his mouth. BYU is certainly scraping bottom with its choice of a warmonger/war criminal for speaker. El Diablo comes to Peckerville. Of course that's just me…
A few years ago here at New England College, we were faced with a similar situation. Many of us were very displeased that an invitation to speak at graduation was extended to a very objectionable U.S. Senator. Faculty, staff and students debated the various options and we decided (after we failed to get the invitaton withdrawn) that instead of boycotting our ceremonies, which were, after all, for the graduating students and their families, we would attend, but under protest. We decided to prepare materials with the details of our position--why we objected, etc. We circulated this information before the event and then at the graduation ceremony we passed out the information along with stickers that people could wear in support of our protest. When the questionable honoree/speaker was introduced we each held up individual signs that simply said "I object." We held those signs high during the speech. When the speaker was finished we went on to enjoy the day honoring our graduates. Was it the best course of action? We were all pleased with the outcome. I wish the students, staff and faculty of BYU much luck as they contemplate their course of action.
Cheney should be giving speechs in the cafeteria at Levenworth, serving 20 to life. What's he going to champion at BYU, torture interrigator as a sound career move, how to lie and deceive while enriching the well connected?
It is one thing to be a forum for free expression of ideas; another to be used as a podium for political opportunism and unpopular agendas. Cheney is definitely out of step with the majority of Americans; he IS a warmonger and war profiteer, and I side with the students and intelligent faculty of this school who object to his appearance at their commencement ceremony. Usually, this spot is reserved for those who inspire idealism among new graduates, and pride among faculty. Who's brilliant idea was it to invite him, anyway? His own?
